trouble batting

trouble batting

hi i am a 14 year old who bowls more than i bat but i think i can bat alot better than i do as i am starting to move my feet again but i still am down on confidence so is there anything that u guys can help with.

(the reason i am starting to move my feet again is because my coach put me 2 bat 4 when i didnt think i was ready so that made me lose all of my confidence).

Re: trouble batting

Just hunker down. Start slow in games, get your eye in, start getting runs and your confidence should shoot up. Also go to the nets and play your shots, so that you know how to do them. I don't know if it will work for you but it worked for me

Re: trouble batting

Have a game plan worked out in your head before you bat, believe in yourself and back yourself to do well - it all helps.

If you're slow to get your feet moving have some throw downs or time in the nets before you bat; it'll also help you to get your eye in as well.

Re: trouble batting

Also there's one thing I would like to remind you, and what I have seen many youngsters ignore. (Being the coach of the Geneva under 13's team) is that the younger players, if not taught this at the correct age, always think that practice and nets shouldn't be taken seriously at all. But then comes in this one thing that I tell to every under 13 player I have. "Matches give you experience, not skill. You need to make the most of the practice sessions in order to improve your skills." Something taught to me by my dad a few years back. So just make the most of your practice sessions and make sure that the conidence that you get in the nets, you take it along with you on the field on a match day. Also like M_C said, have game plans worked out in your head before you bat, and also set yourself reasonable targets when you go to bat. There's no point in going out there with a century in your mind already with a bad form. Start first by aiming for the double figures, then the 20, then thirties, etc.

Hope this helps.

Re: trouble batting

Well personally I'm going through a bad patch as well with the bat and the more i think about it in the match, i dont succeed, so what i try to do is go with a simple plan and just work on it, i just forget about everything else, such as my bad patch and stuff and also try not to take to much pressure, do take some, as i think it helps but not too much. Well its difficult to forget about the bad patch your going through in the match(thats one of the problems i have.) But whenever i have succeeded in going with a simple plan and then expanding that plan has worked for me. (Most of the time i get out because i take too much pressure.)

Re: trouble batting

You have to remember that it can take as little as one ball to get you out of a bad trot, the same as it can only take one ball to put you into one.

Re: trouble batting

i know wat i am doing wrong but i cant seem to do anything about it and the highest score i got i the season was 11* and before that in the season before was 21 but i think that i am starting 2 get ova it because i really timed a nice cover drive the last game so yea thx 4 da tips though.

Re: trouble batting

That's great. I used to be like this guy, I had potential to bat well, just I couldn't. Then one net session changed it all. I dunno what happened, something just clicked, I was smashing then everywhere, nearly killed dad feeding the machine twice, like wowzzz I'm a gun jk.

Now I have the confidence and self belief that I can bat well, because of that, and a net session months after I was smashing a few again and 2 guys my age were amazed, and I'm like geez, I'm not the good, lol, but it was just great, I'm still pretty sh*tty batsman but I'm much better than I was back last season.

I don't have any advice because I'm not the best batsman myself, but just keep working on it and persisting and you'll keep getting better and better, I'm sure of it.

Re: trouble batting

Well everything just went perfect, my technique just went good and I timed it brilliantly, which is unusual for me :p

I have net sessions twice a week, once with the club, once with a personal coach, but yeh I don't know how accessible they are, don't you have net sessions at club training? I wouldn't really know myself, I'd say go when you feel like going or when you want to work on something.

If there a place that has a bowling machine near your place, you should give it a try, that would be a great place to go and get some training in specific areas.

Re: trouble batting

i hav a few net places which r easy 4 me 2 get 2 and i practice with my school team but now dat da season has finished it is a bit harder bcoz of all da rain but i still could get a bit of practice in and i hav improved my technique since da end of da season (2 weeks ago) and i hav been hitting da ball better and more where i want 2 hit it.

is there anything dat i should know about timing da ball really well?

Re: trouble batting

If you want a good read about timing the ball then this article by Harrowdrive is the place to be - Guide to Timing.

I'd suggest reading it bit by bit in order to get the most out of it as it's a biggy!

Re: trouble batting

That timing article is pretty immense, some great points in there with just about the right amount of science, well, at least for me.

Re: trouble batting

Stick in there mate, Jonesy is spot on, I've seen a number of guys join the club I play for, struggle with the bat for ages, and then suddenly one net session they're smashing my good length balls with unreasonable timing! Ricky Ponting was right when he said 'Don't come out of a net session until you're happy with what you've achieved' -just keep working at it and enjoy your cricket. Practice good.. get good :cool

That's a really great article btw, I think every cricketer should read it! Although pretty much everything at harrowdrive is gold dust :D

In fact, I'm going to post that article on my club's facebook group right now...!

Re: trouble batting

thanks for that but i still need help with my batting, is there any drills that i should do when or before batting in the nets or a game?

Re: trouble batting

before a game throwdowns or a quick net session will help u out 4 sure...

as for in the nets... just focus on your weak areas and get throwdowns there...

Re: trouble batting

Aussie boys spot on, throw downs from a team mate before you go into bat in a match are great.

Also for 5 mins before you go into bat in both nets and matches, it can be helpful even without a bat just to practice going forward to defend/drive leading with the head. It gets your feet awake before you start facing the bowlers. I know a lot of batsmen who even when they're at the crease are still just practicing leading the drive with their head to keep their feet moving.

I had difficulty with my footwork when I first started playing, so before a net one of the 1st XI suggested before going in to net to jump up and down a few times, springing your legs back as you jump so the back of your heels get near your bum (though not in front of everyone otherwise you'll look like a prat :p) -it does get your feet moving if they're a bit lazy ;)
