Twenty20 in local cricket????

i heard of the captain from another team in our club last night that our local park comps are bringing 5 twenty20 matches in to the draw... they r saying that they can be used as a "warm up" to the start of the season... the points will be counted into the comp...

now i dnt know what the views of anyone else is... but im not a big fan of this idea.... enough "tonking" goes on when we play one day 35 overs each matches... this is just gunna be a slog fest that will look more like a back yard game rather then a park game....

i rekon twenty20 should be kept for the pros.. it was only brought in as an idea to bring bigger crowds to the stands.. i think thats where it should stay...

what does everyone else think??? would u all like this brought into your league???

Re: Twenty20 in local cricket????

As well as playing in a 50 over league on weekends my club already compete in a 20/20 league and cup on wednesday evenings and have done for years. I think it is good fun but tend to find that most of the game is played by only 5/6 players and the rest turn up to field.

However ours is completely seperate for our main weekend competition, and from what you are saying yours is going to be both 20/20 and 35 overs. Not exactly sure how this will work and if this is the case seems a bit silly cos they are two different formats requiring completely different tactics and skils (and possibly players).

Re: Twenty20 in local cricket????

2 different formats???

thats not the best of it... we will now have.. 20/20, 35 each (our 1 dayer type of thing) and then a longer 70 over each (attempt at a type of test)...

this is what all snr park grades might have 2 be playing from now on...

previous seasons it has only been 35 and 70 overs each...

Re: Twenty20 in local cricket????

20/20 craze picked up after India won the 1st 20/20 World Cup.
Secondly; even IPL also cashed in with the hype and now people are enjoying with the new found game.
Purist will argue that it is not cricket.
It is like in 20/20 Bowlers are paid to get hit.
Currently the concept is yet to be implemented in the club circuit.
But it will be introduced that is for sure.
We will have to wait and watch.

Re: Twenty20 in local cricket????

well m8 apparently it is being implemented into our club circuit at the start of the season which is about 2 months away.

Re: Twenty20 in local cricket????

My club is similar to Slass's. We have a weekend league which is 50 overs, a Sunday league which is 40 overs and a midweek T20 league.

The T20 is pretty good because you have to retire once you've passed 25 so a fair few guys get a go and it's a good friendly league so it's great for getting kids onto hardball and getting their first go at adult competetive cricket. I started bowling regularly in games in the midweek and worked up from there, nowadays I take the 'senior' role of opening - my club does it so a couple of 1st teamers open the batting and normally the bowling too so that the innings is under control and the pressure is off when the kids get involved. The batting is all done 'kid-adult-kid-adult' after that so that there's always a senior partner at the crease.

Your situation sounds a bit wierd Aussie Boy, I'm not really sure if it would work or not.

Re: Twenty20 in local cricket????

Not sure what to say really, we've played twenty20 matches on week nights for a long time, before 20/20 even existed I suppose.

Am I right in thinking that all the different types of games count towards the same league or that you have a number of different competitions?

Re: Twenty20 in local cricket????

yeah they all count towards the same comp...

there will be

4- 20/20s
5- 35 overs each
7- 70 overs each

thats pretty much the draw for this season.... the 70, and 35 overs will be mixed up to give a variation.. but the 4 (maybe 5) 20/20s will all be played at the start of the yr..

Re: Twenty20 in local cricket????

I think its a bit stupid that youve got the 20/20s aswell as a 35 over comp,
in our comp last season we had 70 overs ( over two sundays) and 50 overs( one day) I hope they dont
bring in 20/20 to our comp

I guess I can see the merit in having the different competitions but I can't the see point in having them all counting towards the same league. You'd be better off playing 3 different competitions to be honest.

Might make for more rounded cricketers? The team that wins the league has to be able to perform in all varieties of the game perhaps?

Having said that, I don't like the idea of a multi-discipline league, although in general I'm not overly fond of 20-20. It's fun, but it's not really cricket.

Re: Twenty20 in local cricket????

We have

2 20/20s (really only because we have 1 week just before the Christmas break and 1 after, so we can't play a 2 day match because it wouldn't fair)
3 or 4 30 over matches (at the start of the season on Sundays before day light savings kick in)
The rest 50 over matches.

Our 20/20 matches aren't really slog-athons. One we went about 3 an over, only hitting 1 boundary (long boundary) the other 5 or 6 an over, but not over the top.

Re: Twenty20 in local cricket????

We play 50 over games, over two weekends. And thats it, we don't get any other matches. We play 6 or 7 of those and thats it. to be honest it would be nice to have a few T20's just so I can have a bit of fun. Not too many, maybe 2 or 3. And have these for fun, not counting towards the overall competition

Does each team have 100 overs per innings or do you get 2 innings each over 200 overs?? 100 overs sounds like a long time for one innings, I don't think many teams in our league would be able to bat for that long.

Re: Twenty20 in local cricket????

Haha, no I mean hundred overs in total  Sorry, should have made that a lot more clear

That's about the only merit I can see in it, but then again, the better teams would probably be able to pick and choose players a little more, and bring in those to suit the game conditions.
