Umpire Hair vows to carry on

Darrell Hair will not umpire at next month's ICC Champions Trophy in India - however, the controversial Australian will not resign.



Following Hair's role in the ball-tampering controversy surrounding the forfeited fourth Test at the Oval, Pakistan and India had both protested to the International Cricket Council against allowing him to officiate at the prestigious tournament.

However, the ICC have cited "safety and security" concerns as their reasons behind the decision not to select Hair as one of their umpires to go out to India for the World Cup warm-up.

An ICC spokesman said: "The decision was made on the basis of safety and security concerns for Darrell and those around him at the Champions Trophy."

Hair had shocked the world of cricket in aftermath of last month's forfeiture by offering to quit for a payment of $500,000.

It is up to him if he wants to continue on, but I have this feeling that there will be no spot for him to umpire on the ICC panel shortly.

Sorry if I've said this before, but it would be incredibly ironic if Hair were forced out of umpiring as a result of inappropriately tendering his resignation.

he won't be forced out of umpiring, because in 6 months no-one will care about the situation anymore and he will be umpiring Pakistan games without a problem.

How long it will be before he actually retires is another question in itself though.

After Pakistan requested that he never umpire them again the ICC will not accede to that request. He will last maybe twelve months before retiring.

Is it just me or is there a general sense that Hair has been trying to dictate terms to the ICC? It leaves me with the feeling that the ICC are just dying to sack him outright, but can't for all manner of reasons. Not wanting to show a lack of faith in the umpires being one.

IMO if he retires a year from now or later, he will never umpire in the sub-continent again and that will damage his reputation as a rounded and competant umpire. Not considering those tests when Pakistan (or possibly India,Bangladesh or Sri Lanka) play outside of the sub-continent and he's slated for duty.

I know Pakistan lent him a hand to do it at the Oval, but he cut his own throat.

He didn't ruin Pakistan. The mistake he made was to act immediately on the suspected ball tampering instead of reporting it to the match referee. The rest of the debacle has been hysterical nonsense.

I agree, you're right it is hysteria.

But Hair's mistake - not going to the referee and a bit quick off the mark - isn't that Hair's problem generally?

He is (or was:( ) a great umpire and of the best, but he does have this tendency to go with his opinion all too readily? As an umpire that's usually fine and dandy, but as an employee of the modern game...?

I definitely think Pakistan made a meal of it. They could themselves have appealed in the usual fashion, continued with the game and possibly won, but they decided it was to be amature dramatics night, because they have "issues" with Hair.

But Hair's subsequent attitude toward the ICC has been bullying at worst and demanding at best. At least for a man technically in the wrong. He also forgot about the politics and the payola the ICC get from the sub-continent.

It's in the things that came to pass after the Oval test where Hair should have known better: He was always going to lose against the PCB and asking for U$500,000 to resign didn't help. It looked like compensation for a man wronged who wasn't wronged, and no one asked that he step down. Now we've got the PCB offering to play a ODI and let the ECB keep all the money to make up the short fall from the Oval test.

It tends to look like Hair asking to be compensated when he was mistaken (or wrong) and Pakistan offering to compensate England for being wrong, whilst being wronged themselves.

Whatever the wash-up in all of this, it seems that there might have to be a new ethos amongst umpires. I don't know, maybe I've got this all wrong.:confused:

totally agree, hair has been victimised once again by the subcontinent countries, because he tried to make a stand. i cannot believe that Inzamam copped minimal punishment for forfeiting a test match, whereas the best umpire in the world (backed up by stats) has been sacked. goes to show that the money the ICC receives for tv rights in asia goes a long way to dictating the game, also seen by the subcontinent hosting the next world cup when it is clearly australia's turn to do it again...

Hair has not been victimised, he was wrong. All of the replays showed he was in the wrong and that is a truth that will stand for the ages despite his clearly great record as an umpire.

The next World Cup is to be hosted in the W'INDIES not the Sub-Continent! In any event, how would it have been "clearly Australia's turn" ?

Defending Hair is one thing, but using his error to claim conspiracy against Australia is tragically odd.

Why does an umpire need to make a stand?

Apart from to make a name for himself.
