Umpiring Standards

Seeing as the recent test between Australia and India was beset by some shocking umpiring decisions it's probably time that the powers that be looked at how umpires are rated, retained and in which matches they get to stand.

From what I understand team captains file a report on the standard of umpiring after each game but I couldn't tell you what happens then. It seems as though the ICC might just throw it in the bin for all that seems to occur. I guess they must have a debrief and talk over what happened and why but we see very little action, even if an umpire has a very poor game.

Though I don't want to take the human element away from the game there has to be more that can be done in order to help push the accuracy of decisions, it's not fair that a few bad decisions could end someone's career, whilst the person making them continues to earn a living without seemingly being put under the same pressure.

Also, should we scrap neutral umpires and just let the guys stand on merit? Surely someone like Simon Taufel should stand in games like this?

Re: Umpiring Standards

i reckon neutral umpires should be scraped to let the best umpires do the job, i don't think they are necessary anymore and maybe it will stop some of the shocking decisions displayed in this test

Re: Umpiring Standards

Yeah a umpire like Simon Taufel will never make decisions like this. Bucknor has been making wrong decisions for a long time now. They should have a retirement age for Umpires. I cant believe that he is more than 60 years old. But I am sure that Ponting wont complain about the umpiring. I am very annoyed with how they behaved. They won the test match but they should be fair to accept that they had some luck.

Re: Umpiring Standards

i dont see how u can bag them out no one is perfect ppl make mistakes the indians only complain becuz they lost the match their jus sore losers

Re: Umpiring Standards

You are defending them just because you won the match. If australia got bad decisions that made them lose you would blame the umpires too. There was not one mistake but a lot of more than 5 mistakes at least. Humans make error but if they keep repeating the error there is no excuse.

nah mate i woodnt mind if india won the match u cant expect every umpire to make perfect decisions but it is arguable if the same mistake was made over and over again

Re: Umpiring Standards

Well Australia played some good cricket and even though india lost it would be a memorable match for me if the umpiring was fine. I am just annoyed that Bucknor made mistakes again and again. He gave Dravid out when ball didnt hit the bat and gave Symonds not out when ball hit that bat. Thats why people are getting angry. I am not just making excuses. We lost the first test too but no one made any excuses.

Re: Umpiring Standards

It was a good match, its just a shame it was so controversial, really mares the fact that it was nerve racking till the finish. all this terrible stuff to arise from one game, racism(alleged), claims that one team wasnt playing within the spirit of the game, and india almost pulling out of the series. all of this over a few bad, terrible actually, decisions. i just hope the players can see past all this and go into the perth test in the right frame of mind, thinking about the game not the controversy surrounding the series, and play in the right spirit

Re: Umpiring Standards

yeh everyone should get back in the spirit of cricket and play a good clean game of cricket in perth

Re: Umpiring Standards

and u no what if the umpiring is so bad why dont we replace bucknor with another umpire its the easiest solution

Re: Umpiring Standards

Yeah BCCI stands for Board of Control for Cricket in India. Its a stupid name. They should probably shorten the name, but knowing BCCI I know that it wont happen.

Re: Umpiring Standards

shouldnt it be cricket australia dealing with this matter seens tho were in australia or is it bcci becuz its there players??

Re: Umpiring Standards

oh yeh but the umpires and players should be dealt with icc and the right punishment should be dealt

Re: Umpiring Standards

they are going a bit overboard by asking to ban benson. he just had an off game. it was unfortunate that it was in the same game when bucknor when he made so many bad decisions.
