Ponting and Michael cannot be consulted for the same.
The mistake's Benson made cannot be ignored.In the first inngs;ponting had nicked the ball and he was judged not out.he went to score 55 and when he was not out;he was given out.In the second inngs of the Indian team; Micheal Clarke takes a diving catch of saurav ganguly's bat.But Benson is asking Ponting and on his statement judges Saurav "Out".Then what was the square leg umpire doing there.He was the right person to be referred and Benson could have referred it to third umpire as well.Mike111 said:

yeah he made some mistakes but not as blatant as the ones bucknor did. that legside take was hard to judge and clarkes catch of ganguly looked out. he should have consulted the third umpire probably but it looked clean to me.
bucknor didnt give a edge when roy got one and gave it when dravid didnt get one. neither was a close call either. both were completely wrong decisions.
benson can be forgiven for this but bucknor has gotten quite old and is not as good as he was once.

Mistakes happen but the level of error in this test was a joke, into double figures.
We need to use technogly to aid the umpire, not take away their power but to add to it. However, player referrals will be a nad thing.
Also, keep neutral umpires, at least we're not in the middle of an umpire baised row based on nationality as well.

The more I think about, the more I think we need to stick with neutral umpires.
Still think we need to have a maximum age of retirement though, I remember that Dickie Bird become more susceptible to the dodgy decision with age as did Shepard. Fine umpires in their prime but it a long old day, standing at the crease for 6 hours plus in often hot temperatures.

I would like to add a few:
Umpires are Human being:Fine but with the vast experience and assistance of third umpire;At least they can ask for it.
Fitness Level
oes ICC has any system to check the fitness level of the umpires.
Elite Panel: Out of the 10 Test Playing countries;only 8 umpires are in Elite panel.Whereas at least 2 umpires should be recommended by each of the test playing countries.The more umpires u have the less dependencies u will have on the current lot.
Decision making errors:Batsmen nicks a ball down the leg-side where the pad was not even close to the bat and the umpire cannot even judge it properly.Secondly;asking the fielders whether a catch has been taken and on basis of his assurance giving a batsmen "Out" without even consulting the square leg umpire and 3rd umpire is an act of stupidity.That is exactly Benson did.
Steve Bucknor with his vast experience cannot judge a edge from the bat;whereas Andrew admitted in the Press conference that he was "Out".He was judged "Not Out" and he scored a century.
In the first Inngs;Brett Lee bowled "out" Wasim Jaffer with a no-ball and Benson could not see it.
It is high time that ICC steps in and look forward to use technology more to support the Umpire so they are not in a sorry state like Bucknor as his vast years of hardship and experience as an Umpire has gone for a Toss and his respect has been diminished.
Even ICC has replaced him for the rest of the series.What more can he do about it.His age is 61 years old and maybe wants to complete till the next world cup in 2011.Benson is lucky to slip away since the focus is mainly on Bucknor.

I think they should use more technology where it is possible. They should at least use technology to detect no ball. Then the umpire can atleast concentrate on looking at the batsman instead of the bowlers foot.

What technology could they use to detect a no ball though? You would need something that flagged it up immediately in order to give the batsman time to make the most of the no-ball.
