What has everyone thought of the Chmpions League Trophy Tournamant
I must say i have thoroughly enjoyed the Champions League Trophy tournament. It just shows that T20 is here to stay and will only get bigger and better.
Its been great watching the experienced International players show thier craft to a worldwise audience buts been equally great to watch young players step up to the plate and help win matches for thier thems.
The three stand out batsmen for me have been Warner, Pollard and Duminy.
Warner and Pollard showed that they can win games off thier own bat in the space of a couple of overs, and Duminy showed that you do'nt ahve to smash a six of every ball to make a valuable contribution.
Yet for all the entertainment and cricketing skill thats been shown throughout the tournament there were some shocking performances by teams that you'd expect beter from.
I wish to single out the 3 IPL teams which i'm sure most people including the organizers and Indian fans thought would get at least to the semi finals.
The performance by the Deccan Chargers (the current IPL Champions) agaisnt Trinidad and Tabago was one of the worst performances i have ever seen in any form of the game. Gilchrist had to have been bitterly dissapointed with the way his team bowled and fielded as a spot in the 2nd round was up for grabs. I could not believe how many wides and no balls there were (3 in a row!) along with all the misfields, dropped catches and overthrows, which basically cost them the match in the end.
And Bengalore Challengers, who were the IPL runners up werent that much better. Playing Victoria thet only ended up with around 120 which was rather dismal in T20 terms. What surprised me was how they lacked any urgerncy and enthuisiasm in the last 5 overs. They gave away so many dot balls. Even if the picth was hard to bat on it doesnt excuse lazy batting. As it turned out it was an easy chase for Victoria.
It just shows you dont need a team filed with former and current International players like the IPL teams to do well in T20.
One gripe i have with the tournament is the crazy idea of giving teams bonus points simply for beating a team that just so happened to get into the 2nd round. I thought it was highly unfair for the teams that did get a win in the 1st round but that oponent did not get through to the next round so they got zilch. I think teams like Victoria got a major leg up, and it made a lot of matches in the 2nd round dead runners as they knew they couldnt progres to semis.
I think a batter idea for the 1st round would be have every team play each other. The teams that get the most points from the matches progress go through the bottom half go home.
I just wish to ask what has everyone else thought of the Champions League Trophy Tournament. Which players have stood out for you. What did you like/not like about the tournament.
