What Is That Monty Doing On Our Cricket Team?

Re: What Is That Monty Doing On Our Cricket Team?

That's correct. Andrew Symonds is NOT from Australian Aboriginal ancestry.

He could've chosen to play for either of West Indies or England if he wanted to.

Thierry Henry's parents were from Guadeloupe.

That's a good one about the French hero. There are also following 3 who are heroes to French people, not forgetting Zidane who was already mentioned:

Patrick Viera : Born in Senegal
Youri Djorkaeff : Born of Armenian parents, chose France over Armenia
Lilian Thuram : Born in Martinique, I think.

There are few examples for players who chose to play for Germany.

Mehmet Scholl : Born of Turkish parents, chose Germany over Turkey
Gerald Asamoah : Was born in Ghana, got German citizenship
Oliver Neuville: Born in Switzerland, chose to play for Germany
Lucas Podolski: Born of Polish parents, chose Germany
Miroslav Klose: Born of Polish parents, chose Germany over Poland
Kevin Kuranyi: Panamanian mother and Hungarian-German father. Born in Brasil. Could have chosen to play for Brasil or Panama or even Hungary. Chose Germany

Muzzy Izzet was born to Turkish parents in England. He chose to play for Turkey, instead of waiting to be selected by England.

Alex Santos was born in Brasil, but took Japanese citizenship and chose to play for Japan, instead of waiting to be selected by Brasil.

Santos Silva was born in Brasil, but took Tunisian citizenship and chose to play for Tunisia, instead of waiting to be selected by Brasil.

Twin brothers Hamit Altintop and Halil Altintop were born to Turkish parents in Germany. Instead of waiting to be selected by Germany, they've both played for Turkey.

Asif Iqbal and Hanif Mohammad were born in India, but brought up in Pakistan. If they wanted to, they could have waited to be selected by India. They played for Pakistan, and especially Hanif Mohammad was a legend for Pakistan.

Jonah Lomu was born in New Zealand of Polynesian blood (either Samoa or Tonga, not sure). He could have played for that small island country instead of New Zealand.

Tana Umaga was born to Samoan parents in New Zealand. Could have played for Samoa instead of All Blacks.

Almost half of the All Blacks team could play for individual Polynesian islands. Majority of them are born in New Zealand. But some of them are not, and have picked up New Zealand citizenship.

Radike Samo is Samoan by birth. But he was given an express Australian citizenship, so he could play for Wallabies, instead of Samoa.

Sorry, he was born in Fiji, not Samoa.

Andrew Symonds has Carrieban parents and was born in England. He could have played for either West Indies or England, but plays for Australia. So the argument can go both ways, no?

You can extend this argument to many other sports.

Christian Vieri was born in Australia, but played for Italy for a long time. Simone Perotta was born in England, but played for Italy.

George Gregan has Zambian parents, but has played for Australia for a long, long time.

Freddy Kanoute was born in France to Malian parents, but chose to play for Mali instead of waiting to find out if he could make it to the French team.

And then of course, Zinedine Zidane born of Algerian parents played for France for such a long time.

To repeat, this whole argument about players' ambiguous nationalities can go on and on with too many examples. People have changed nationalities with immigration for hundreds of years. This is not a black-and-white topic.

Christian Vieri was born in Bologna, Italy

Thanks for the correction. But he was raised in Australia. I think he was (is) an Australian citizen as well, although can't find a link stating this. He played cricket as a kid as well. In fact he was interested in becoming a cricket player for Australia. The link you posted says something to that effect at the bottom.

Re: What Is That Monty Doing On Our Cricket Team?

... lets not forget Ricky Ponting.

He was born in Tasmania and now plays for and even captains Australia.

Outrageous.

Is Tasmania a really-real place then? Who'd have thunk it?:D

Can they measure out 22 yards there then?

Now that's funny!!!! :D

I remembered yet another high profile name.

Felix Magath was born to Puerto Rican/American parents (or at least one parent) in Germany. He had a long and illustrious career playing for Germany, and is now even a coach for a big-time club like Bayern Muenchen.

Way to go Monty Panesar, Felix Magath, Zinedine Zidane, Jonah Lomu and the bunch!!!!!

He's the only one of 'em that doesn't have two heads. They hailed him as a 'miracle birth' at the time. Now look at him. Miracle indeed.
