World Cup Fantasy League

Anyone interested in a World Cup Fantasy League, based on actual scores from the World Cup?

I've been having fun with the Fantasy Domestic League Draft that we're currently in the middle of right now, and I'm wondering if anyone wants to try something a little different for the World Cup.

HOW IT WOULD WORK:
-People can draft a team of players from the World Cup squads, and each team would get points based on the actual performances from the World Cup.
-We could make it a really simple system. Each run scored could be worth 1 point, and each wicket taken by a bowler could be worth 20 (or 25) points.
-For example, if Brett Lee took 2 wickets and scored 12 runs, whoever had him on their team would get 52 (20 + 20 + 12) points for that match.

Basically, the idea would be to predict actual performances from individual players at the World Cup.

There's no point in even doing this until the World Cup squads are finalized, but I just wanted to see if anyone else was interested. It should be fun.

Anyway, if you're interested, post up here, and we'll see if there's enough interest to try this in about a month's time.
(It took a while to get enough people interested for the Fantasy Domestic League Draft, so it seems like a good idea to post this now and get as much time as possible to sign people up.)

Re: World Cup Fantasy League

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: If it's fantasy sports, I'm in!

Sounds like fun Cleazer, hopefully we get enough other players to make it a good competition.

Stickied!

This is a great idea, Cleazer. I will definitely play!

How did I miss this thread :)
This sounds good, count me in too

Re: World Cup Fantasy League

10 people so far! Sweet!

Anybody have any comments on the rules?
I'm all in favor of keeping it as simple as possible.
And 1 point per run is about as simple as it gets.
What do you guys think for wickets? 20 or 25?

25 !

Re: World Cup Fantasy League

Definitely 25.

how many players would we be drafting for our teams?

Re: World Cup Fantasy League

20 points per wicket.

4 wickets is not equal to a century.

Re: World Cup Fantasy League

Okay, I took a look at the stats for a few old ODI series, and I'm leaning towards 20 points for a wicket. I think that would make it fairest when we're trying to choose players for the draft.

So when do countries have to name their squads? February 15?

Re: World Cup Fantasy League

Hoping not to step on any toes here, but merely wanting to make this as big as possible.

Copied from my post at the cricket subboards of BigFooty;

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Just so everyone knows, I am running a massive World Cup fantasy competition. I've done it for every WC since 1987, and this years is going to be bigger and better, and for the first time, opened up to the world. (as opposed to just my workmates)

Details are still being finalised (squads still a few weeks away from being named after all), but I'll be back with full details;

Tidbits;

- data from every ODI is currently being loaded into multiple spreadsheets to provide the backbone of all the statistical rating and scoring systems for the tournament
- there will be a simple competition whereby entrants will need to select players from specific groups of players to form a squad. Scoring will be on runs, wickets, catches, run outs, stumpings, plus bonuses for certain milestones.
- there will also be a complex competition which revolves around a salary cap, with the scoring similar to the simple competition plus bonuses and penalties for faster/slower scoring/economy rates.

I'm most of the way thru the ODI data entry, which will end up comprising around 530 matches. Once that is done the scoring methodologies are tweaked to balance the batting and fielding sides, then the players need to be grouped and/or rated.

So far its been about a 200 hour journey, with about 50 hours work to go.

Look forward to getting as many BigFooty entrants as possible.

Nope, but it doesn't belong in this thread.
Good luck. Sounds complicated and fun.

Re: World Cup Fantasy League

As for this competition, anyone else want to play?
We've got 10 people, which is a great number, but there's room for more people if they're interested.

As for the number of players per team, I wouldn't want to go over 15. Fewer would be fine with me too.

Here's a suggested rule:

If any player you drafted is injured and officially replaced, then you get the replacement player on your team.
