1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

West Indies 188/4 at lunch.
They still trail by 91 runs, but this has been a good first session of the day, losing only the wicket of Fidel Edwards. Lara is on 88 and Chanderpaul is on 43.

Haha, you wrote so much, it looked like you cut and pasted from another site. Maybe you should become a writer for cricket websites! (Wait, you already are one.) :D

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

Wow, Chanderpaul looks pretty bad out there. The lunch break obviously wasn't kind to him. I'm not sure if he'll be able to make it much longer.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

Play has resumed after lunch, West Indies are 4/212 with Lara on 104 and Chanderpual still there on 48. West Indies putting up some fight in the second innings but they still trail by 67 runs.

These two would have to bat for a considerable amount of time for West Indies to save the game.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

216-4

Chanderpaul got his 50, and Lara got his 100, his 33rd Test century.
Chanderpaul is toughing it out, it doesn't look like he intends to go back and have a rest for a while yet.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

This is Lara's first century in Pakistan and I believe he now has a ton in every major Test nation. Until this Test Pakistan was his vodoo nation so to speak but with a 50 and an unbeaten ton he has more than rectified that

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

233-4 at drinks, the day is about halfway done.
West Indies still trail by 46 runs.
Lara is looking very comfortable and confident out there, especially in that last over, picking up 10 runs.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

Hafeez gets Lara lbw for 122.
West Indies 238-5, still trailing by 41 runs.

Surely that was the big one. This test may finish today now.
I wouldn't be surprised if Chanderpaul wilted now that he doesn't have Lara out there to rely on.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

Bravo gone way too quickly,
West Indies 248-6

So much for any hope of the West Indies holding out for a draw.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

Yet another poor decision to dismiss a West Indies batsman.
This time Ramdin is out, despite the bat clearly being 2 or 3 inches away from the ball. The lbw's on Gayle in the first innings and Sarwan in the second were just as bad.

What's going on here? Some sort of fix by the ICC for the Hair incident?
Trying to give Pakistan a free win?

Well, West Indies 252-7 at tea,
they still need 27 runs to force Pakistan to bat again.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

Chanderpaul finally out for 81.
West Indies 278-8, trailing by only 1 run.
Looks like Pakistan will have to bat for a very brief spell to finish this match off.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

Okay, all out for 291.

Pakistan need 13 runs to win....

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

Pakistan got there easily in the end although they did lose Hafeez to win by 9 wickets. Collymore picked up the only wicket as they cruised to 1/13 off 5.1 overs.
Imran Farhat finished on 8 not out with Younis Khan undefeated on 0. Umar Gul took 4/99 in the second innings with Shahid Nazir picking up 3/63.

Pretty disappointing effort from West Indies, Lara's hundred was in vain and along with Chanderpaul, they were the only ones to put up any sort of effort and managed to make Pakistan bat again. But, Pakistan were just too good and were superior to West Indies in all facets of the game.

The second test of the series starts on November 19 at Multan.

Umar Gul was Man of the Match.

I didn't know that.

Also interesting that so few of Lara's centuries have turned into wins for West Indies.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

It's amazing that Lara hasn't gone mad and not in a nuthouse by now. Test after Test after Test of putting your best foot forward for your team, trying in vain to shoulder the brunt of the pressure with Shiv at your side, and STILL losing must do something to your psyche. Lara's ton today was stunning work, but someone needs to be a nazi with Shiv re his diet and nutrition,, honestly, some tough intervention is required here. Before I say anything more about the lack of performance from the others,, I await the second test to see if they redeem themselves......but this much I do know - Fidel Edwards has outlived his usefulness, this experiment has to go.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

So what changes would we like for the second test? I think the rest of the squad is comprised of Lendl Simmons, Omari Banks, Runako Morton, and Daren Powell. Frankly, that's pretty slim pickings.

I'd be all in favor of putting Simmons in to open alongside Gayle. Couldn't be much worse than Ganga. I'd really like to see him get a chance over in Pakistan.

I wouldn't ming seeing Banks in the lineup either, but I'm not sure who he'd come in for. I wouldn't want to see Bravo left out.

Do you want to bring Powell in to replace Edwards?

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

Just to review the match and performances, Pakistan went in with a very defensive startegy, strengthening the batting with Abdul razzak , and going one bowler short. Razak's performance has been pathetic as he is not a bowler suited to these attacks and usually he doesnt score on good batting pitches, put him in a difficult pitch , pressure situation he will bat out for a 50.

Lara & windies infact went in with a positive frame of mind, batted first in overcast condition though on a flacid wicket, some accurate bowling and lacklustre batting resulted in their downfall in the first innings and they could not come out of the hole. Pakistan on the other hand applied themselves , adding fielding mishaps to that they got a winning score and got home safely.

Pakistan need to find another spinner to partener Danesh, abdur rehman, mansoor amjad, or even Mushy( he has got 8 wickets against a top domestic side in a domestic cricket match last week). Multan will be another batsmen's paradise so abdur razak goes for another specialist bowler. Pakistan can give Imran farhat another go as they are not pressurized for a change right now.

Windies will be forced for a few changes, probably morton for Ganga(still think Ganga deserves another chance), may be evaluate bowlers edwards give way to powell or collins if he is part of the squad.

Re: 1st Test: Pakistan vs West Indies at Lahore

Well Cleazer I thought about that all night ,, and I think it's a tough call because it is essential that this team gel as a unit and function as a unit. I have never liked the idea of changing the team constantly because we have limited resources in the Caribbean ( for various reasons I shant go into) so the key is in managing the talent we have at our disposal in the most effective way. With regards to the batting, Ganga was a huge disappointment, and I think Ganga's problems have alot to do with the state of WI cricket when it comes to supporting players out of season than it does with talent. Gayle also concerns me. He would be a far better batsman if he wasn't so lazy with this footwork and he needs to remember this is Test Cricket, no need to keep chasing the ball as if it's an ODI. Sarwan is good when he plays sensible cricket and doesn't take retarded embarassing risks that screw up the dynamic of the batting order. It's little wonder that Bravo feels pressured at a time in his career when he should just be following the lead of the senior batsmen, picking up tips here and there on now to properly judge pitch conditions and adapt accordingly at the crease. With the bowling, oh well.....Edwards has had plenty time to prove his mettle. Lara believes he has potential but he clearly hasn't utilized this opportunity given to him. But we can't wait forever until he does or finds a way to tap into his talent and deliver. The WICB is fraught with a myriad of shortcomings and players like him are a sad reflection of this. He certainly has alot of pace but desperately needs a mentor. I can't think of an adequate replacement for him, it is "slim pickings" as you say...perhaps Powell but Powell also needs alot of work... however I can't imagine him doing much worse than Edwards.

What exactly is his problem? I remember he was having some problems in India during the trophy too, but just don't know what it was.
