Ben Cousins Sacked and Deregistered

West Coast Eagles sack Cousins

October 17, 2007 04:00pm
DEVELOPING STORY: THE West Coast Eagles have sacked Ben Cousins following the arrest of their former captain yesterday on drugs charges.

The Eagles board voted to dump Cousins after he was arrested yesterday and charged with possession of an illegal drug and failing to take a blood test.

The 29-year-old will answer the charges tomorrow in Perth Magistrates Court.

By sacking Cousins, West Coast have probably ended the prospect of any further punishment from the AFL.

The Eagles had been threatened with the loss of draft picks or premiership points if any player was found to be involved in drugs again.

Cousins is almost certain to be de-registered by the AFL, ruling out the prospect of him being drafted by any other club.

West Coast chief executive Trevor Nisbett said there was no chance of Cousins playing for the Eagles again.

"This was probably one of the most painful (decisions) in the history of the club," Nisbett said.

"It's tragic it's got to this stage but it was felt it had to be made. And we're sure we've made the right decision for Ben's health."

Nisbett said the decision to terminate Cousins' contract was due to an accumulation of incidents, not just the events of yesterday.

"We felt this was the right decision to assist Ben to focus solely ... on his health," he said.

Nisbett spoke to Cousins' father and doctor today, but had been unable to contact the player personally.

Nisbett said Eagles coach John Worsfold understood and supported the decision to sack Cousins.

West Coast chairman-elect Mark Barnaba said it had been "a very sad day".

"Ben has been a great champion for our club," he said.

"Our reaction is sadness, empathy and concern.

"This is a young man who truly has an illness and needs help."

FORMER West Coast Eagles AFL star Chris Mainwaring had taken a cocktail of drugs, including cocaine, before his sudden death, it was reported tonight.

An autopsy and toxicology tests were carried out to determine whether drugs were involved in his death.

The Nine Network in Perth, which said it had obtained the toxicology report, said Mainwaring had cocaine, ecstasy, cannabis, anti-depressants and the acne drug, Roaccutane, as well alcohol in his system when he died.

The sports presenter for the Seven Network in Perth collapsed and died in Perth early on October 1, aged 41, shortly after refusing help from police and ambulance officers.

The two-time premiership player had reportedly been on a weekend binge, involving cannabis and ecstasy.

Police and ambulance officers went to Mainwaring's home in the beach suburb of Cottesloe about 11.30pm (WST) after a complaint he was yelling in the street.

He appeared calm and refused help from the ambulance officers who left him in the care of a neighbour.

But ambulance officers found him collapsed when called back to his home about an hour later.

Disgraced West Coast player Ben Cousins visited his friend twice on the day he died - once on Sunday morning and again that night, leaving about 10pm (WST).

Cousins reportedly passed a voluntary drug test shortly after hearing of his friend's death.

The Nine Network reported tonight that West Coast said Cousins did not take a drug test at the club.

"West Coast Eagles now say Cousins did not present at the football club and have no knowledge of, or involvement in, that drug test," the Network said.

WA Police spokeswoman Ros Weatherall said the release of the toxicology report was not the force's responsibility.

"It has nothing to do with us. It is up the the state coroner's office," she told AAP.

The report could also be released by Mainwaring's family, she said.

Mainwaring's father, Hub, could not be contacted tonight.

i hope he can go away from football and get better. I know it's self inflicted but i still feel sorry for him. So much talent gone. It's a really sad story.

 |@ Lift your game son. We don't need dumb one word answers. You mightn't care, but when things like this happen it is serious.

In other breaking news Germany has just invaded Poland . .

Seriously though, I live in WA and am sick of every person, radio and TV constantly talking about this tool. Good riddance I say, the only bad part about it is I wont have someone to boo and Josh Carr someone to smash at the next Western Derby.

Re: Ben Cousins Sacked and Deregistered

Drug possession charges dropped against him.

They are still charging him with refusing a blood test

Re: Ben Cousins Sacked and Deregistered

I am a hardcore and very passionate West Coast Eagles man but Ben needed to be sacked from the club. People need to realize and especially fellow West Coast supporters that he is no longer the "saint" and "good guy" he once was and that he is no longer the same person he has been in the past. People still think of Ben as the guy that held the club together and worked his guts out, week in and week out during the "Judge" years. He is no longer a shadow of that former self.

Even though Cousins has had the "possesion of illicit drugs" charges against him dropped, the public must realize that Cousins broke the terms and conditions of his revised contract which had a clear cut clause that any further misdemeanours, run-ins with the law or conduct that is deemed unsatisfactory or inappropriate would result in his contract being terminated. It does not get any more clear cut than that. And then we have the fact that he has been charged with refusing a blood test. I can tell you that only makes him more guilty that he already looks.

As much as I love my club, I am sick and tired of seeing our name repeatedly dragged through the mud time and time again by the media because of constant off-field indiscretions involving our players. I've had enough, the club has and the supporters have. It is now blatantly obvious that Cousins has a drug problem. There is no denying it now. Even though he has never tested positive he is no doubt a user and not only does he have a problem, it is starting to take over his life and it's becoming more prominent than ever.

Staying at the club won't do Ben or anyone involved with the Eagles any good, he is a cancer to the football club at the moment and he really needs to get some help. Ben needs to go away and sort his life out. Get off the drugs, get away from the people he hangs around with, get away from Western Australia, possibly even the country and get himself right. He needs help and quickly.

If he doesn't, I and many others, hold grave fears for his own safety. We all saw what happened with Chris Mainwaring (for those of you that don't know, Chris Mainwaring was a former Eagles player that died a few weeks ago from drugs overdose aged just 41). Something similar may be on the cards if Cousins doesn't right himself and it may be sooner than you think.

It is a very, very sad day for the club in what has been a pretty shocking year. West Coast are devastated that it had to sack one of its greatest players and arguably one of its finest sons. Unfortunately, Cousins gave them no choice in the matter and it just had to be done. It's a damn shame that someone who had so much talent and had the world at his feet would give in to drugs with the sole purpose of getting "off his face" for a few hours.

What a tragedy.

Re: Ben Cousins Sacked and Deregistered

Ben Cousins was my favourite AFL player by a mile and still would be if he came back to the AFL so i hope he does and he plays for Brisbane :D:D

Re: Ben Cousins Sacked and Deregistered

Cousins will be at Collingwood next year, lock it in Eddie @|

Re: Ben Cousins Sacked and Deregistered

yeh i think he will aswell |@
eddie will think of some way to snare him:D

Re: Ben Cousins Sacked and Deregistered

I dont want him at Sydney, our club culture doesnt need to be affected by the likes of him. My tip, whoever he goes to he'll be useless like Carey when he went to Adelaide.

Re: Ben Cousins Sacked and Deregistered

nah he will be a legend at the tigers because our best players hasnt even played 10 games (trent cotchin) and then there is deledio who is also close to our best

Re: Ben Cousins Sacked and Deregistered

Doesn't fit the profile for the Tigers.

Foley, Deledio, Cotchin, Thursfield, King, Polak, McGuane, Riewoldt, Moore, Hughes, Morton, Pattison, Edwards, Schulz, Tambling, Raines, Jackson and Polo are all under 25. Richo, Brown, Johnson, Simmonds and J Bowden are all in their 30s now and will be finishing up in the next few years.

You dont need a 31 year old washed up midfielder to hang around for a couple of years where there is absolutely no chance of a premiership window, as well as the off chance that he might have a poor influence on the minds of that huge pack of promising youngsters.

BTW, didn't Terry say a few weeks ago that he wouldn't be chasing Cousins?

Just my two cents.

Re: Ben Cousins Sacked and Deregistered

Very tough to come back after time off at Cousin's age, but if anyone can do it it's him, the guy is a fitness freak. Agree that he needs to go to a club looking to finish off, Collingwood PSD ;)

Re: Ben Cousins Sacked and Deregistered

My older brother has had a couple of business lunches recently with Collingwood officials. He reckons they are very positive in the prospective recruiting of Cousins.

Top sauce;):)

Re: Ben Cousins Sacked and Deregistered

Would be the most likely scenario I reckon.

It'll probably hurt more watching Mr Cousins run out in another jumper than it did with Juddy.

If he actually plays AFL that is.

Re: Ben Cousins Sacked and Deregistered

Looks like it might be all over for Cuzzy bro unless the Tigers throw him a lifeline.
