City Of Moorabbin Cricket Association 2011/12

No point worrying about home finals guys, knowing people in the know @ West Bentleigh in all the years they were in finals in wooly and longy they never once played a home final and they played finals 7 or 8 years in a row. Apparently you need a fence!!! Carnegie's ground is much the same as wests. I wouldnt worry too much about where you play the shape, size or location wont make a difference, you need to be able to perform on all grounds because you wont be playing the granny at home.

If memory serves correct the Royals in their hey day with Schleiger et al played one or two finals at Berties Reserve. The world did not seem to end because there was no fence. It is pretty poor form on behalf of the Executive to treat the Spiders in the manner they have, considering the contribution the Spiders have made to the Association this season. Firstly they graciously agreed to change their 1st round home match against Bentleigh Uniting to Centenary Park on a Sunday, which allowed Uniting to unfurl their flag in front of a large crowd and made it a great day for the club. I appreciate this was something between the clubs, however it still required the sanction of the Executive and it was a decent gesture that they made, especially in this dog eat dog world.I also recall a few seasons ago that the Spiders graciously gave up another home game to allow Washington to commerate the Late John Quiney; which again was a great gesture.

The Spiders contributed a lot of players to the CMCA Under 21's this season whilst many of the traditional super clubs ignored the competition.Again I appreciate that clubs cannot force players to participate but it seems that the competition was a very low priority. Coach Haley sacrificed many hours of work and brought much recognition and attention to the competition which I am sure everyone was chuffed about; especially when the lads defeated the so called power turf associations and put them in their place. Added to that they have had to sacrifice most of their home games due to their ground being redeveloped which has no doubt had an impact on their bar sales, not withstanding that there was probably little if any home advantage playing at a ground they were unfamiliar, with no canteen, toilets a mile away and only trees for shelter against any adverse weather.

As BR correctly pointed out, the Wash Ups host a Preliminary Final as does Southside in D Grade, however in the top grade the decisions are made in an ad hoc manner with little explanation which is a poor way to run any organization. It is ironic that a few season ago Le Page was well and truly on the outer as a finals venue; and now it is the premier venue. How does that happen?

The precedent in the past few seasons has been that the Grand Final is played on a neutral ground (and no doubt Hoop Park will probably get the gig next season) but the interim finals are to be awarded to the highest placed teams to allow them to benefit from bar sales. Le Page is in a unique position where they will host two Preliminary and probably two Grand finals which will ensure a financial windfall for them and no doubt contribute significantly to their search for a playing coach. Good luck to them.

With respect to the games on the weekend, I am torn between the Juggernaut who are now building some momentum (much to Merlot's chagrin) and the brave Spiders who have had a great season. The last time they met in Round 9, the Juggernaut were travelling well at 3/206 and were restricted to 7/236cc. The Spiders chased down the score with the loss of six wickets and two overs to spare. Coming of 86 in a final and now playing a cut throat match against the finals specialists I can see them struggling.

The Sharks fell in a heap after a good start whilst Uniting overcame their disastrous Round 11 performance against the Ommies when they were 7/31 and out played the Ommies in the cut throat final. One thing is for sure, with these two teams playing it would not surprise me to see either team get rolled for 100+ and then watch the other implode as they chase the score. Added to that Uniting will have a strong show of support at Shark Park which could add more pressure on them. There will certainly be a lot of twists and turns in this game; but I have to stick with the Sharks. One wonders whether the two narrow defeats to Chelsea last season is still in the back of their minds.God forbid, if I was playing for Uniting I would be reminding them at every opportunity. Alas Juggernaut traits are hard to break.

Army's Wanderers exorcised some demons on the weekend and I think they may have the self belief to take the next step.
Good luck to all.

With finals, especially the higher grades, i think the best grounds should be used. Fenced grounds, surface of grounds, best facilities etc. This nonsense that finishing on top gives you the right to play a home final doesn't cut it. I know sometimes you get some good revenue over the canteen/bar, but in my experiance over finals most away team supporters bring their own refreshments and it's happening more and more each year. I've seen clubs take eskies and sell the beer to their own supporters. A lot of clubs have made finals and played elsewhere because of their ground/facilities. As mentioned West Bentleigh didn't play home finals, and look at the great ground/facilities at Highett West now. They were never considered prior to the ground upgrade. Mackie never got Grand Finals until the council upgraded their ground either.

Anyway, good luck to all participating. Let's hope there are some great games and big performances.

Not quite sure what the obsession is with grounds having to have a fence for finals, the ground is the same size for both teams and in regards to Lords, the surface is now fantastic since the resurfacing, certainly play Grand Finals at the best available venues, but if a ground is good enough to host Longmuir H&A games, how is it not suitable for a Preliminary Final?

Jimmy don't you respond to the old boy these days.Am i persona non gratia?

Merl alive and kicking[/quote]

Always happy to banter with Merl, just been busy, no sign of Clocker or Merl in Mentone yet and am dubious about you fitting under his cape.
Sounds like The Sharks started shooting themselves in the foot last Thursday night with unavailabilities and withdrawals, Spongebob might be able to elaborate. Expect them to bounce back this week.

Really not sure who Uncle Mick has been talking to, but from where I stand I don't think anyone at the club feels all that sea sick!! We had Aspendale on the ropes heading into tea, lost a couple of important ones and let them back into the game - enough said - they played well (Luke in particular), so kudos to them.
Jimmy - you're correct... we had Oaten unavailable in the ones to bowl his usual 15 tight overs, and our best (on average) bat in the twos, so it does have an impact for sure - but you have to play with what you have at your disposal so we're making no excuses whatsoever. No doubt it was a grey weekend for the Sharks, but looking to bounce back in a big way this weekend as you have predicted :D
And Luke - yes, we do have a prelim at home this week, will miss the sandcastles at Glen St!!! What was going on there? Would have to be the worst conditions for ANY bowler to bowl on in my time in the CMCA. Wish I had some photos to post up!!

Having won 10 out of 11 home and away games this season has been extraordinary, but a place in the big dance would cap off the best season in the Spiders long history.
I love the creativity of turning 8 wins, 2 draws and a loss into "won 10 out of 11". Nonetheless, a breakout year for the Spiders. They will either win or lose the game not by ability, but mentally.

With Dollman & Heywood, the Sharks are a much better outfit than last year when they lost on the last ball of the season. They SHOULD account for Uniting's seconds. I guess it depends who qualifies to play for them from last week's Longmuir team.

Yep Sugar, I noticed that error after I posted it, but I guess the point I was trying to make was that Carnegie South only lost one game during the season and it was a pretty fantastic season for them.

Clocker has summed up the situation brilliantly. I know that as I'm affiliated with the Spiders I'm opening myself up to criticism, but it's a sorry state of affairs when a club is measured by their fence.

It seems Carnegie South is truly defenceless against the CMCA's decision making.

At the end of the day, Le Page park is a great neutral ground and I'm certain the boys will get on with business as usual on the weekend.

SpongeBob, the Aspendale boys didn't seem to have to much trouble with the run ups, if they were the worse you have seen in your time it says something for your side to be bundelled out for only 146. Finals pressue really taking it's toll on the Sharks, worrying about the run ups suggests to me the Sharks are weak of mind.

To tell you the truth, I simply assumed the Spiders would be playing the Prelim at home. They had earned the right after all. As UM says, if it's good for the Home and Away season, it should be good for the finals. The CMCA were smart enough to revert finals games back to conditions that match the home and away season (ie back in the days when finals were 80 or 90 overs a day over 2 or 4 days), so they should be consistant with the grounds too. Especially if the hard yards have been done to earn that right.

I at least hope that the Spiders have done some deal over the bar takings for the weekend.

Fences are considered dangerous to fielders in international cricket which is why all grounds are roped off so i dont understand the requirement for a finals ground to have a fence. Councils these days are also leaning towards what they call open areas so the requirement to have a fence around a suburban field has become outdated.

Agree with Mr Parker in relation to bar takings. Although not playing at home, being the home team the Redbacks should get a minimum of half the takings if not the whole lot. Le Page should just hand over the keys and allow Carnegie or both Carnegie and Easts to run the bar. If this doesnt happen the unofficial bars around the ground will do a thriving trade anyway and the Le Page canteen will be left to hand over two freebies to the umps at stumps.

Lets hope the weather doesn't decide the grand finalists and all the best to all teams involved.

I am hearing a lot of disturbing reports about Longy club that returned to its grubby past recently;consequently there is a lot of friction within the ranks.Hopefully this was a one off incident and is quickly forgotton;but I don't think so.

Nice work clock, you have just narrowed it down to 7-8 longy clubs. Could you be fishing???
Where are all the previews this week? I will give you my two bobs worth, the spiders to bounce back, they have had too good a year to be knocked out in straight sets, their batting does worry me as proven last weekend but if they can bat first i feel they should be able to defend most scores. Would be a poor end to a great year and with the comp being so even chances like this don't come around to often.
Washington should be too strong for units twos, though I said that last week about the sharks. Pressure cricket does funny things to some players, hopefully for the sharks they have got the bad one out of the way.
All inall should be 2 really tight contest that could go both ways.

Not fishing...never fish. I think Mick may have heard something but it will come out soon. Always does.

1st Semi Final Preview

ESBC over Golfers just (I have been proven wrong time and time again by Kingston Heath in recent weeks and I would select them, but I cannot bring myself to tip against East Sandy in a final. Luke Dallas to be the difference).

2nd Semi Final Preview

Uniting over Carnegie comfortably (Many are selecting this to be close, but even taking into account the Spiders excellent form, surely one cannot see them causing an upset. Uniting to bat first, put 250 plus on the board and then Chubbs to run through the Carnegie top order and put the game beyond doubt early).
2/2 from last week - almost spot on in the Uniting game.

Preliminary Final Preview
Unfortunately, I am away fishing this weekend and all I know about fishing can be written on the back of a postage stamp.

So, I will be brief.

ESBC to defeat Carnegie South, never tip against East Sany final in a final as per 1st semi.

I'll be back next week with a full review of this game, the outcome of the Knights Sports Awards and the Grand Final preview.

Good luck to all.

Unlike mick to hear things second hand and pass them onto other people who pass them onto other people and then turn around and say " I didn't say that or what I meant was " ! Scuttlebutt about other clubs gets people no or very little respect !!!
Give the people names or clubs !!!!!
