Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

Oram's gone. Starting to get difficult for New Zealand now, Oram goes for a wild swing but Udana's slower ball outdid him and cleans up the stumps.

5/93 from 13 overs, 66 needed from 42 balls. Peter McGlashan joins Guptill at the crease.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

A wicket for Sanath!! Guptill sweeps but doesn't keep it on the ground and Angelo Mathews takes the catch at deep backward square.

6/96 from 14 overs, Nathan McCullum is in. Required rate is 10.5.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

Mendis has his third, short and wide ball, MsGlashan cuts but doesn't get on top of it and the ball balloons to backwards point.

7/98 now, Vettori in.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

NZ folding quickly here. McCullum was run out after an LBW appeal was turned down and Vettori top edges Murali only a few balls later and is caught in the deep.

9/102, Mills is joined by Butler.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

All over, full toss smashed away by Butler to long-on, Mills came back for the second but Mathews' throw was super and gets Mills short via a direct hit.

NZ are all out for 110 from 17 overs. A poor end to the innings by the Kiwis, the top order set the game up but the middle order couldn't capatalise. Yet again Mendis and Murali played well. It's so hard to chase these targets with two excellent spinners in the Sri Lankan line-up.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

Just watched a replay of the first semi and what a win by Pakistan. 149 always looked defendable on that pitch with their bowlers. Afridi great with the bat and what a ball to get rid of Gibbs?!

The choking culture of the South Africans continues..

:eek::D

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka in the final. I don't think anyone would have predicted that.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

How good was Angelo Mathews first over last night? He really set up the win with the first over of the innings.

0.1 Mathews to Gayle, 1 run, full on leg stump to start with, Gayle flicks towards deep square leg

What can Marshall do?

0.2 Mathews to Marshall, OUT, he can play on that's what! Marshall pushes forward tentatively and gets a bottom edge on to his leg stump, the ball dislodges just one bail, what a disappointment for Marshall

XM Marshall b Mathews 0 (1m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Marshall was slow on the shot ... unfortunate that the ball just clipped leg stump. Simmons is the new man in.

0.3 Mathews to Simmons, no run, defended on the front foot

0.4 Mathews to Simmons, OUT, bowled him! Round his legs that too! Mathews bowled a length ball angling towards leg stump, Simmons moved across his crease, trying to glance towards fine leg, he moved too far across and the ball clipped leg stump, that ball actually clipped the underneath of Simmons' thigh pad and deviated on to the stump

LMP Simmons b Mathews 0 (1m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

0.5 Mathews to Bravo, no run, Bravo, who's had to pad up in a tearing hurry, pushes the first ball towards cover

0.6 Mathews to Bravo, OUT, that's another one bowled! Mathews pitched the ball on a length outside off stump, Bravo was in two minds, undecided between playing or leaving it, he began to push at it before trying to pull his bat out of the way, the ball went off the inside edge to uproot middle stump

DJ Bravo b Mathews 0 (1m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Chris Gayle carried his bat last night too, don't see that too often in Twenty20 games.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

I am happy to see 4 spinners all so different and unique in the game. I would like pakistan to win after passing through such a difficult time. The fact they have a leg spinner also helps. Lets hope it will be a balanced and exciting game, although I doubt it as I think sri lanka have something more. Could be different if dishan does not fire. He is due a low score soon.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

A great game on our hands here. Sri Lanka batted first and got off to a terrible start, losing Dilshan and Mubarak within the first two overs. Sanath Jayasuriya made 17 before departing only two overs later. Jayawardene, Silva and Udana all followed suit to leave Sri Lanka reeling at 6/70 after 13 overs.

But, Kumar Sangakkara and Angelo Mathews came to the rescue, putting on an unbeaten 68 for the seventh wicket. Sangakkara finished with 64 not out from 52 balls and Mathews scored 35 not out from 24 balls to boost Sri Lanka to 6/138 from their 20 overs.

Abdur Razzaq's comback from the ICL has continued to pay dividends, taking 3/20 from three overs to run through Sri Lanka's top order.

In reply, Pakistan have begun carefully and are 0/11 from 2.1 overs.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

0/39 from 6 overs now, Pakistan are doing enough to stay with the required rate, Kamran Akmal's done most of the scoring with 29 not out from 24 balls.

Required rate is a manageable 7.14.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

Akmal's gone, Jayasuriya's first ball follows Kamran who tries to smash him out of the ground but he is cramped for room, misses and Sangakkara has the bails off with Akmal well and truly out.

Now Murali strikes, Shazaib Hasan is out also trying to charge. He tries to slow sweep Murali but top edges the ball and Jayasuriya takes a simple catch at short fine-leg.

2/63 from 9.1. Afridi's not out on 5. Required rate hasn't changed, still 7.12.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

2/83 from 13 overs, Afridi 17 from 19, Shoaib Malik 8 from 8.

Required rate is up to eight runs per over now, Pakistan would fancy themselves from here with some batting to come and with two experienced players in Afridi and Malik at the crease.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

Bad over from Murali, Afridi smashed him for a six and then a four off the first two balls and that's relieved some of the pressure now.

14 off the over, Pakistan 2/97, required rate has dropped back to seven now. Sri Lanka need wickets and they need them quick!!

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

2/113 after 17 overs, Afridi 37 from 32, Malik 18 off 19.

26 runs required from 18 balls. Another good over and Sri Lanka will like their chances.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

Ah, Udana's lost the plot here. There was a wide early in the over then Afridi smashes him for a massive six over mid-wicket, a huge blow.

Now there's a no-ball for a waist-high full-toss which is flicked for four.

19 runs off the over, Pakistan are just about home and hosed here, 2/132, they only need seven runs to win. Afridi the star again 53 not out off 38.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

Pakistan win!!! Yorker from Malinga hits Afridi on the pads and he and Malik scramble through for the single to win the game!! All the Pakistan players are rushing onto the field, they are the new Twenty20 World Cup Champions!!

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Discussion/Match talk thread

Player of the Match is Shahid Afridi for his 54 not out off 40 balls. A really mature innings from Afridi who has been playing really well the last few months.

Tillakaratne Dilshan is Player of the Series. He scored more than 300 runs for the tournament and gave Sri Lanka a super start in almost every game. He credits going up the order for his good form of late. Sri Lanka could have used another good innings from him today but it wasn't to be.
