Wrist Spin Bowling (Part Four)

another batsman just came out of his crease to flick a widish leg side ball that he expected to turn,it just kept on going, the umpire gave a wide, but the leg umpire gave a stumping :)

Dont you just love legspin ? How has your season been so far Leggie Sunny ?

Our season got off to a bit of an early start today. One of the big local clubs Billericay Cricket Club opened its doors for an open day event. I'd seen images of it (below) on bing maps and was aware that Essex use it for their practice facilities so always wanted to go along and have a look around as it looks very impressive from the air.

They indicated that anyone could go along and sample their facilities and have a knock about in the nets. Say no more! We were the first ones there and we spent a couple of hours bowling and batting and very impressed we were too. When we turned up I was a bit flummoxed at first with regards to where the nets were going to be as we could see the outdoor nets, but nothing that looked like indoor nets? Once in and shown around we were guided around the club house and then were shown the ground floor with all the changing and shower facilities and the nets! The nets were indoors on the ground floor of the clubhouse!

We all had a good bowl - a bit rusty having not really picked up a ball for a couple of months, but an interesting session by the end. For most of the time I was walking in off of 4-5 steps - sometimes reverting to my Tich Freeman skip and it wasn't going that well and then towards the end I thought let's strip this down to basics and bowl off a stand start or 2 steps and then it came together. Off 2 steps it went brilliantly - accuracy, flight and turn and with variation in speed I was causing problems and producing balls that were being mishit creating chances in a potential field situation. It's obvious that my fitness has dropped which is to be expected, so starting from here I'll be looking to get back to a good fitness level. My issues with my calf muscles and the resulting plantar fasciitis seemed to have been resolved, but I reckon I'll have to watch out for my knees this years as they seem to have suddenly got very creaky!

I will be changing clubs this year and joining my two sons at their club and I'm looking forward to the start of nets at the end of January. Hopefully I'll have a better year than last year!

i played indoors again last night. we got absolutely thrashed but against one of the top sides. half their team plays county, minor counties, or ECB premier. the other half are top coaches. i think they are all employees of the cricket centre where we play as well, so i bet they get plenty of practice too!!

anyway, i got there an hour early and had a net practice. my first in quite a while really, apart from odd moments here and there. my action is so solid, i can just rock up without even warming up and the first ball is a good one. im still only bowling probably 50-60% good balls, and maybe 10% bad ones, and im overpitching a lot (but hardly ever dropping short!!). but its vastly improving all the time, and im getting massive drift and turn.

ive figured out where im losing revs through my action. ive managed to correct that which was my primary concern in matches, as i seem to take effort off the ball and then it wont turn. i need to bowl on a proper wicket because indoor net wickets exaggerate turn and bounce, but the signs are promising. at the end of last season when i bowled in the same nets i wasnt getting that kind of turn, and not with any consistency.

the team i played last night has a leg spinner who is apparently Berkshire first XI (minor counties). i saw him bowl a few weeks ago against another side and he was turning an old indoor ball massively, something which i cant do consistently. i can turn the brand new ball with a sharp seam quite easily, but not an old scuffed up one. i saw him warming up a bit in nets and he wasnt turning the ball as big as i was, but he wasnt bowling with much energy, just turning his arm over. when he bowled against our batsmen in the match he was landing it on that driving length and then turning it about a yard, or more. our best bat went in to face him (the guy that i do most of my practising with) and he beat his outside edge 3 or 4 balls in a row. it was classy stuff, and there wasnt a great deal anyone could do about it. i think he ended up with 2 or 3 wickets, but could have had another but for an unlucky missed catch (it hit the roof, then landed on the non strikers back and bounced to ground safely, with 2 fielders scrambling at his feet trying to get at the ball lol).

i bowled 2 overs and got smashed a bit. the first over i landed 3 cherries that on any other week probably would have got me 3 wickets. they all landed on a solid length, and turned. but their batsmen were class and managed to get bat on everything, just about. my 2nd over was against their best batsman, and he was smashing everything for the back wall. i think someone said hes on Hampshires books! i was overpitching, which wasnt horrendous as a few times he couldnt hit me, but mostly it played into his hands. the ball was either reaching him on the full around shin or ankle height, or bouncing a yard in front of him. perfect for him to just smash down the ground. i needed to be a couple of yards shorter as i was turning the ball a bit. my captain took me off for the last over which i wasnt very happy about because he said "this guy is just going to smash you". he was going to smash anyone though, which is what annoyed me. but they scored something like 160 runs, and we were all out for less than 30 anyway!!

My season hasn't been much so far excpet this match :/. i'm a spinning all-rounder and here are my stats for the season

4 20/20's

1st match: 0[no.10] run,2/9(4 overs)
2nd match: 0[no.11 >_>] runs,0/5(1 over lol)
3rd match: 0[no.6] runs[AGAIN!!!], 0/17(1.3 overs >_>)
4th match: 30 runs*[opening], 2/8(3 overs)

Batting average -[craptastic] - 0+0+0+30 = 30/4 = 7.5 >_>

You gotta hand it to you Jim2109, you found some crack batsmen to bowl at !!!

That sounds like you pretty well kept the ball up there under their snouts ?

Spinning allrounder would be right. Top score of 30 and some good bowling figures. That's good stuff. 3rd match got a bit ugly but that happens. Lessons are learnt.

Poor old Rashid got belted out of the Redbacks attack after just one over last night. The guys who saw him bowl before the game in the nets said he bowled that flat the batsman would have to be lying on the ground for rashid to get above his eyeline !

Wow Dave that place is a cricketers heaven. 2 grounds, Indoor nets and all. Can you use them whenever you want?
I've been practicing a lot but have reached a point where I have more minor questions than answers and have decided to fork out a few bob and get a few lessons. Not cheap but he's a specialist leg spin coach so hopefully he can point me in the right direction. http://www.sydneycricketcoaching.com.au/

What made you pick that one ?

Hi Macca, hope you had a good chrissy and new year.
Location, he's just round the corner from me and the fact he's a leg spinner himself, playing grade for Manly. I'll bet Philpott has coached him at some stage too as it's Philpotts old club. He is NSW juniors leg spin coach too and was in the NSW squad himself.
Ive done ok teaching myself with the help of others on here but I just need some outside help to really fine tune things and make sure Im on the right track.

With regards the image - yeah it's a pretty good set up 10 mins down the road. Essex 2nd XI practice and play there. The nets are open all the time as far as I can make out and it may even be open all the time as well with full time staff during the summer? But I wont be joining them - certainly not this year or in the forseeable future. I may go down there a couple of times in the summer and go see Essex boys training, playing and being coached - that may be useful?

Sounds good with the coaching - you'll have to give us regular reports and what the bloke says and what you reckon to his methods of teaching/training.

Happy New Year chippy.

that guy is also running juniors and seniors workshops at kingsgroves http://www.kingsgrovesports.com.au/go/Academy/Spinners-Workshops in feb. I was thinking of going to that and i can watch the session for an extra few bucks as well.

i remember you found philpott still doin a bit of coaching for manly junior side. Their junior rep teams play newcastle up here soon so we might get along and watch.

There needs to be some sort of incentive for youngsters to aspire to playing test cricket. Apparently, the pride of playing for your country will no longer suffice. The saddest sentence in that article is "Like it or not, cash is king in cricket." We all know it, but it's still so sad to think that very few professional cricketers still play simply for the love of the game.

Well he got 3 for 15 in 3 overs today. Don't try to play down the third team poms as they seem to be better than your best :p
