Cricket Australia looks set to again reduce the size of Australia's domestic one-day competition the Ryobi Cup, cutting the matches played by each state to just six games and playing the series in Sydney over a one month period, starting after the AFL Grand Final on September 28.

Honestly, what a joke. Are we trying to lose the World Cup already? I mean really? We've tried 13 over bowling allocations, split innings and now just six matches in a month in Sydney.

What a farce.

I am not so sure. The one day cricket has been loosing popularity in this country for quite a while. Reducing and compacting it to a season opening tournament might just work. then you will have focus for shield before the xmas break for the bigbash. I do agree a bit longer and across all states is really required.

ugh! That looks embarrassingly ugly on paper, but I have to admit that nairbe makes a couple of good points. Still, a one-month binge where effectively only one state gets home ground advantage is nowhere near the ideal way to run a List A tournament. It seems very wrong to me that the domestic T20 tournament is longer in duration than the List A tournament.

I would love to see the Cup getting picked up by ABC, though.

What audience? No-one goes to Shield matches and not many more go to Ryobi.

Shield match attendance is true, Ryobi Cup not so much. Ryobi games on the weekend have fairly good crowds, games on Friday Nights at the WACA used to be fairly well attended.

CA has partly killed the Ryobi Cup by putting matches on Tuesday and Wednesday Nights. No-one wants to watch mid-week cricket with work the next day.

I like the fact that it is back on free to air TV but am not happy with the way it has been completely shafted. This is the premier domestic one-day series in Australia and to reduce it to a one month tournament is just pure contempt. And the supposed "reasons" for doing so in that it helps with the upcoming 50-over World Cup are just bullshit.

Getting ridiculous, the idea of doing it in a block is understandable. The suggestion that all matches are held in NSW is terrible.

I do like the fact I can watch some games on 9 though!

The timing of the decision is bizarre. Cut down the ODI's and only put them in one state just before the ODI world cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The justification I read was that it was more of a block tournament like the World Cup. But then the world cup isn't only in NSW so makes no sense really.

Maybe they are going for reverse psychology. Six of the seven states don't get any one day cricket for months and so more people dip into their pockets when the world cup comes around...

I suggest we just use this as a Ryobi Cup thread as well.

How terrible are the pitches so far?
178
197
232
171
Are the scores from the first innings so far.

It can't just be the pitches...

On a Facebook page, someone said that Australian cricketers had an attitude problem to 50 over cricket. I don't know if that is correct but you can't only blame the pitches.
