The first test in this series is underway with Sri Lanka hosting Bangladesh. Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl first, a decision which has proven quite correct so far.

Bangladesh find themselves 2/32 having lost both openers, Javed Omar and Shahriar Nafees for 8 and 15 respectively.

Chaminda Vaas and Lasith Malinga have one wicket each.

Sri Lanka XI: MG Vandort, BSM Warnapura, LPC Silva, TM Dilshan, KC Sangakkara, DPMD Jayawardene*, HAPW Jayawardene+, WPUJC Vaas, SL Malinga, M Muralitharan, CRD Fernando

Bangladesh XI: Javed Omar, Shahriar Nafees, Rajin Saleh, Habibul Bashar, Mohammad Ashraful*, Khaled Mashud+, Mashrafe Mortaza, Mohammad Rafique, Abdur Razzak, Shahadat Hossain, Shakib Al Hasan

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Colombo

Bangladesh continue to prove why no-one takes them seriously.

They're 7/64 at lunch on Day 1, a pathetic effort from a side that showed the world at the World Cup that they were ready to stand up and be counted.

Shakib Al Hasan is the top scorer so far, he has 16.

Dilhara fernando wasbrought into the attack shortly after my initial post and had instant success, picking up a wicket in his first over. So far, he has 3/21. Muttiah Muralitharan has figures of 2/2 off three overs.

An insipid performance for the Bangladeshis so far, this game could be over quite quickly if this continues.

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Colombo

Bangladesh were bowled out for 89 off a measly 32.3 overs. Muralitharan finished with 5/15.

Sri Lanka's reply started off a bit jittery, debutant Malinda Warnapura was out for a golden duck and Sangakkara fell soon after for not many. But, Michael Vandort and Mahela Jayawardene have steadied the ship, taking the Lankans to 2/179.

Vandort is on 72 and Jaywardene has progressed to 90 off just 108 balls.

They already lead by 90 runs and there's still 20 overs left of today's play.

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Colombo

200/3 now

Jayawardene has retired hurt too.

once again, at test level they falter.

they can do it in the one-day game (to a degree), but at test level they really struggle.

it's about time they got rid of Habibul Bashar too

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Colombo

3/227 at stumps on Day 1.

Vandort has moved to 87 with Dilshan on 27 off 28 balls. A lead of 138 runs already on first innings and this game looking very one-sided even though it's only early stages.

Sri Lanka will be looking to build that lead up even further tomorrow, we'll most likely see a declaration late in the day provided the Lankans don't get bowled out.

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Colombo

5/348 now, a lead of 259 runs.

Vandort scored his first test century this morning but fell to Mohammad Rafique for 117. Mahela Jayawardene came back in and is currently not out on 124. A short time ago, Dilshan was run out after a mix-up which saw both batsmen at one end, Prasanna Jayawardene is the new batsmen and is undefeated on 6.

Shahadat Hossian is the only multiple wicket-taker for the Bangladeshis, he has 2/72.

Massive lead for the Lankans at the moment and it will only get bigger. Bangladesh may struggle to make Sri Lanka bat again.

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Colombo

370/6 now

Jayawardene of the Mahela variety has been dismissed, for 127.

The lead is only getting bigger and bigger.

Declare now, get the game over and done with.

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Colombo

Jayawardene of the Prassana variety is on 65

and

Chaminda Vaas has reached the half-century mark: 50* at this stage

Just declare and get this over with, finish the game off today.

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Colombo

Finally they declare.

577/6

Vaas 100*
Jayawardene 120*

leading by 488 runs

3 Overs to be faced today:

Bangladesh are 1/0 off 1.1 Overs

can they finish the day off without losing a wicket?

we'll wait and see!

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Colombo

they survive!

3/0 off 3 Overs!!

good going guys!

Stumps Day Two:

only 485 runs to go!

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Colombo

Bangladesh are really struggling. First, they let Prasanna Jayawardene score a century in just his 10th game and then they let Vaas get one and Vaas is their opening strike bowler.

Very worrying times for them I feel. Showing slow improvement in the one-dayers but they are still hopelessly out of their depth in the long form of the game.

Getting completely outplayed here and the Sri Lankans aren't even at full strength.

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Colombo

5/233 at stumps. A slow day for Bangladesh but they've managed to deny the Sri Lankans for a whole day.

Unfortunately, they still trail by 255 runs and it appears unlikely that they will make Sri Lanka bat again unless a minor miracle of some sorts happens. They day could have finished off a lot better but Saleh and Ashraful fell shortly before the light was called. Javed Omar made 62, Rajin Saleh 51 and Mohammad Ashraful 37.

Muralitharan has a couple of wickets but it's taken him 34 overs to get them. Vaas, Malinga and Dilshan all have one wicket each.

Still two days to go, for how long can Bangladesh prevent a Sri Lankan victory?

Re: 1st Test: Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh at Colombo

Sri Lanka have wrapped up the Bangladesh tail quicker than it takes to cook two minute noodles.

Bangladesh lost 5/21 in the morning session and finished up all out on 254. Lasith Malinga picked up 4/80 and Muttiah Muralitharan 4/87.

So, Sri Lanka win convincingly by an innings and 234 runs. A very poor first innings effort by Bangladesh effectively put them out of the game and it was just a matter of time before Sri Lanka finished off the test. The Lankans were too good for Bangladesh throughout the match, they dominated right from the word go and never relinquished their hold on the game.

Muttiah Muralitharan was named Man of the Match.

The next test starts on July 3.
