Manuka Oval in Canberra hosts the Sheffield Shield final with New South Wales having to play their home final in the ACT with the Sydney Cricket Ground unavailable.

Michael Clarke was available for this game but recently withdrew after suffering a shoulder fracture in the final test against South Africa. Doug Bollinger is also out after being called up for the Australia T20 squad playing in the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. Moises Henriques and Gurinder Sandhu replace those two in the squad.

For the Warriors, Mitch Marsh has been declared fit to play after overcoming a side injury he picked up against XXXX Queensland Bulls and pace bowler Simon Mackin has also been called up to the squad. The Warriors flirted with including Subiaco-Floreat batsman Alex Malcolm into the squad after hitting three consecutive WACA first grade centuries but decided to back out of form opener Cameron Bancroft.

I think WA are a chance, Blues have lost Bollinger and Clarke who are huge outs for them. If we can make a good score in the first innings we'll be a sniff I reckon.

The Blues finished the day at 6/242. Considering they were 1/162 at one point that would have been a disappointing result for them. WA struck back late through Behrendorff and Hogan who used reverse swing beautifully to pick up a chunk of wickets late in the day.

New South Wales Blues 6/242 (90 overs)

Steve Smith 75
Ryan Carters 72
Jason Behrendorff 3/41
Michael Hogan 2/43

NSW 7 for 331 with Henriques on 73. WA need to wrap this up quickly, the game is starting to slip away..

I've played in gf/finals for my club, when we've put similar scores. It's a bit of a blow. You're hopeful things can turn around once a solid partnership forms. But deep down, it's done.

WA slump to 9 for 180. Mitchell Marsh on 92, hopefully he can at least get a century.

edit - and he is left stranded there.

In the end, New South Wales were far too good for Western Australia. After things looked pretty even after the first day the Blues took control of the game and never relented, despite only needing a draw to win the Sheffield Shield. WA slumped horribly on day two and their innings never really got going except for a knock from Mitch Marsh which salvaged some respectability. Rain spoiled much of day four which pretty much guaranteed the Blues the Shield with only one day to go. Day five was a mere formality and after sending down a touch over 50 overs for the day both captains agreed to call the game off just before 2pm local time.

Overall New South Wales won their 46th Sheffield Shield, having dominated the format since the first shield was played for in 1892/93. This was also their first shield since 2007/08 when they defeated Victoria. Speaking of the Vics, they won the wooden spoon, their first since 1995/96 and in fact this season was the first time they've finished in the bottom two since 2000/01.

New South Wales Blues 1st Innings 447 (168.5 overs)

Moises Henriques 140
Steve Smith 75
Ryan Carters 72

Jason Behrendorff 4/95
Michael Hogan 3/78
Ryan Duffield 3/126

Alcohol. Think Again WA Warriors 1st Innings 180 (92.5 overs)

Mitch Marsh 92
Shaun Marsh 40

Josh Hazlewood 6/50

New South Wales Blues 2nd Innings 4/197 (77 overs)

Steve Smith 103*
Kurtis Patterson 52

Jason Behrendorff 2/48

Result: Match Drawn
Series: New South Wales won 2013/14 Bupa Sheffield Shield
Man of the Match: Moises Henriques (New South Wales)
Man of the Series: Marcus North (Western Australia)

What the hell kind of name is that?

I know, it's a bit ridiculous but it's all about sponsorship. The WACA signed a lucrative six-figure deal with Healthway which is a state government health organisation over here. Basically they promote healthy living to sporting organisations over here through healthy environments, promoting healthy eating and activities. They also actively campaign against smoking and promote the anti-smoking message a lot through encouraging people to quit. Healthway are also against sporting clubs having unhealthy sponsors, for example fast-food and alcohol companies so rather than having clubs sponsored by beer and places such as Hungry Jack's etc they'll thrown money at clubs to be sponsored by them. Hence why we're called the Alcohol. Think Again WA Warriors.

The other states have also sold naming rights to their side.

New South Wales - NSW SpeedBlitz Blues (Road Traffic Authority for NSW slogan to target speeding)
Queensland - XXXX Gold Queensland Bulls (Beer company, pronounced as "Four X")
South Australia - WestEnd Redbacks (Beer company)
Tasmania - PKF Tasmanian Tigers (Global accounting firm)
Victoria - Commonwealth Bank Victoria Bushrangers (Major Australian bank)

It's pretty much about the money. The naming rights tend to change every few seasons. WA used to be sponsored by Retravision which is a housegoods/whitegoods company here in Perth while the Vics had several seasons sponsored by a Carlton United Breweries which is a major beer company here.
