The 2022 Australian Football League (AFL) season commences on Wednesday. For those not familiar with the sport, Australian football is one of Australia's national winter football codes and is a sport which is entirely indigenous to this country (i.e. it was created in Australia). The AFL is the elite level of the sport and is a fully professional competition which includes a salary cap and a national draft.

This particularly competition has been running for 125 years having been formed as the Victorian Football League in 1897 and served as the state based league for Victoria until the mid 1980's. In 1987, the competition expanded to include one side from Western Australia (West Coast Eagles) and one from Queensland (Brisbane Bears) as well as the Sydney Swans who moved to Sydney from South Melbourne for the 1982 season.

Presently there are 18 teams spread across five states with matches played in all the mainland states (as well as Tasmania) and territories within the country.

As mentioned above, the season commences on Wednesday evening with a Grand Final rematch between Melbourne and Western Bulldogs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). You may recognise the Melbourne Cricket Ground from it being a cricket ground in the summer but the MCG or "the 'G'" spends its winter months with Australia's other passion, football or footy!

This thread will be the thread for your news, views and opinions for the 2022 AFL season plus other footy too.

Ljp86 Ljp86 how about that roos vs eagles game! Ripper of a match.
Hope your team stays covid free

I'll be watching a full replay during the week. It seemed an okay game but didn't reach too great a height. I thought we tried hard but with a number of players injured and many missing due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols, it was always going to be difficult for us to win. Given what happened, we played well to get close and I thought North would win by more than what they did in the end.

Good game by Larkey to kick six goals, North will want an improved effort as a side though in their next game. Brisbane this week will be a big test for them.

Oh wow those eagles are having a lot of bad luck.

We haven't had much luck thus far, a lot of injuries and players out with COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Unfortunately our gameplan is an issue in that it has become outdated.

Melbourne having a training run against Port Adelaide.
Kind of feel sorry for R Red_dog who is a known port fan

Port have been very ordinary in the opening four rounds. They do have a number of their better players out but have not played too well in a couple of games they've contested.

Great to get our first win of the season today!! A pretty good good game today and we showed a lot of heart against Collingwood when we were missing a number of our first choice players. Our younger players showed a lot of guts this afternoon. :thumbsu:

Many pies fans losing it this morning with the social media people having to calm them down.

Glad your team had a win.

Four rounds complete and there's only one undefeated team at the moment in Melbourne while Port Adelaide are the only side without a win.

It was a very gutsy effort in the end. We were perhaps a bit fortunate at the finish but the guys certainly deserved the win after what was a stellar performance.

North Melbourne put in a great effort too to really push Sydney but just fell short at the final siren. Hopefully they can do the same against the Bulldogs in the Good Friday clash.

First sacking of the season.

Gws have parted ways with Leon Cameron.

Rumours already floating about that Alastair Clarkson will get the job.

Mark McVeigh is a stand in coach after this weekend.

I reckon there will be a few candidates but Clarkson will certainly be one that GWS will chase. The question remains whether this will trigger other movements in the coaching sphere given that Cameron has resigned and that GWS will chase Clarkson to replace him who is likely to want to get back into coaching next year.
