4 ways bowlers can prevent shoulder injuries

Re: 4 ways bowlers can prevent shoulder injuries

Liz I'll take your word for it and give up on that then - you're the expert. So if I go out and buy one of those discs and do the exercise with one of them - what kind of weight should I be buying? Or is the weight of the disc not a part of the equation or is the exercise in itself not that beneficial?

Re: 4 ways bowlers can prevent shoulder injuries

The weight depends how strong you are but with this type of exercise lighter is usually better. This is unlike usual training where you go as heavy as you can manage because you are training the core and shoulder capsule stability which does not require overload.

If you do go for it I recommend starting in a half kneeling position first (one knee down, one up like a lunge), then when you can do the exercise without moving your back change to full kneeing.

Re: 4 ways bowlers can prevent shoulder injuries

Excellent advice from David. The priority is technique not weight; if the weight is so heavy that technique is compromised, at best you will be wasting your time, at worse you will cause injury.

Round the World is hugely beneficial in general and especially for cricketers Dave.

Re: 4 ways bowlers can prevent shoulder injuries

Nice one good advice - I like the idea of kneeling I can see how that makes sense. I'll be looking at the disc next time I'm off to decathlon. In the meantime couldn't I just use something a bit chunky of the same kind of size?

I would recommend it Dave, get the technique sorted then add the weight later.

Re: 4 ways bowlers can prevent shoulder injuries

hi guys and gals,

new to the board so i look forward to reading all the threads in time. anyway 2 season ago we were training before the season started. i did not warm up properly. we batted and bowled. then we did our fielding. cut a long story short i injured my rotary cuff muscle. every since my shoulder is always sore and it clicks. i used to open the bowling and was fairly quick if i dont mind saying so :D but now i have lost a lot of pace and take pain killers before i hit the field. Any advice on what i should do or has someone done a rotary cuff before?

Re: 4 ways bowlers can prevent shoulder injuries

hi liz,

thanks for the link/reply. well yes it is the rotary and i am 33 now (as of today happy bday to me lol) and i hate doctors and physios so no chance of me seeing one. i guess i can do light weights to strenghten the shoulder but it does hurt when i try to do em. will see how rest or at least next couple games go. by the way on the weekend 8 overs 3 for 22. not bad :)

Re: 4 ways bowlers can prevent shoulder injuries

Happy Birthday!

Totally sympathise with respect to doctors and physios;) However, if it is a tear, it will only get worse and the tear will run away, damaging the rotator cuff further. You are only 33, you have another 33 years of possible play if you get it sorted... it's worth it:)

Get a scan at least, if it is a tear you can then choose whether to have it surgically treated or face the prospect of giving up bowling in a few years.

Re: 4 ways bowlers can prevent shoulder injuries

are you a physio or something liz? yeah may do a scan but not sure when i can with my work.

ps thanks for the B-DAY wishes :)

i have a question i get a stabbing pain in my lower left side of my back when bowling??
anyone no what it is or whats causing it??
i only get it sometimes tho

mate, i had this as well, i had to bowl off spin because i could barely run at all. I went to the doctor, and he said i had tore a ligament in my lower back that helps connect the spine to the pelvis (i think, i cant really remember). I was put on some anti inflammatories, and was better in no time. I suggest you talk to your doctor
