Bowling Skills & Death Bowling.
Just thought I would rate the skills of some past and current bowlers.
Past Players:
McGrath
One of the only pace bowlers I have seen who could swing the ball both ways, reverse swing it, seam & cut it both ways bowl slower balls, bouncers & yorkers with perfection and accuracy. Often bowlers are either seamers or swing bowlers but McGrath was both and had all the other skills perfected as well. If a ball existed he could bowl it and bowl it well.
Using McGrath as the benchmark I will rate our pace bowlers.
Bracken

Hilfenhaus

In swing: n/a
Leg Cutter: 5
Off Cutter: 5
Yorker: 8
Bouncer: 9
Slower Ball: 4
Accuracy: 4
Reverse Swing: 8

Pace is inconsistant and is a let down too often. Hasn't got the other skills to do it without bowling 150KM/h+.
Lee
Out swing: Was 8 now 4.5.
In swing: 4
Leg Cutter: 6
Off Cutter: 6
Yorker: 7 but has gone missing.
Bouncer: 7 but also missing.
Slower Ball: 5
Accuracy: 6
Reverse Swing: 6.5.
Seam: 6.5
Couldn't get his seam position right in India and appears to have lost his pace. Doesn't have the height to be dangerous at his current pace and lack of movement.
Watson

Leg Cutter: 5
Off Cutter: 5
Yorker: 6
Bouncer: 8
Slower Ball: 5
Accuracy: 8
Reverse Swing: 3

Siddle
Out swing: 4
In swing: 4
Leg Cutter: 7
Off Cutter: 7
Yorker: 5
Bouncer: 7
Slower Ball: 4
Accuracy: 8
Reverse Swing: 6
Seam: 8.5
The future no. 1 man of the Aussie team. Could easily be the best seamer we have, gets good bounce, has good pace, moves the ball off the seam and has a good bouncer. Unfortunatly injured.
Johnson
Out swing: n/a
In swing: n/a
Leg Cutter: n/a
Off Cutter: 9
Yorker: 5
Bouncer: 7.5
Slower Ball: 6
Accuracy: 6.5
Reverse Swing: 5
Seam: 3
Has good pace but has only 1 trick, his standard delivery is an off cutter and doesn't always move. probably should hold the ball accross the seam so he runs his fingers down the seam instead of accross it. That way he would hit the pitch with it and move the ball more, would come out like a fast left arm authodox bowler. His unique/strange release means he needs to hold the ball a unique strange way.
Hopes

Our most talented bowlers. Has most of the skills and the results show. Unfortunatly another setback with his elbow injury. A player we desperatly need.
Over all:
Our bowlers lack variation and skill. Most of our bowlers only bowl 1 or 2 deliverys really well.
Watching today's one dayer I saw hardly any yorkers and attempted ones fail and that was on a flat deck!
Off cutter slower balls are the easiest to bowl but also the easiest to pick. I think nearly every one bowled this year has been picked. The most effective has been the split finger one. It appears our bowlers only know one type of slowerball which is easily picked.
The bouncer has been used well in this match although some have been a bit wide.
Where are all the multi-skilled bowlers at the moment?
Perhaps Harwood or maby Nannes are due for a call up into the ODI side/squad...
