Bring back australia a?

Re: Bring back australia a?

Australia A, I used to love the concept, and love watching the games between Australia and Australia A. It'd be good now because there are so many young blokes who are pushing for those spots in the main test and one day sides, but have only played domestically and performed at that level. This gives a chance for those blokes to prove themselves at the top level before being thrown to the wolves. Someone like Steve Smith, Phil Hughes, Clint McKay, and even Mark Cosgrove would really benefit from it.

Mark Cosgrove would really benefit from it.
he deffentaly would running laps of the oval!
the problem is that the australian a sides have generaly better than the international teams visiting that they have played against.;)

Re: Bring back australia a?

I agree there ants.

Not only would it allow the young players to come through, but because of the hugely dominant team that has played the last ten years a lot of cricketers didn't get the chance they should have gotten. An example, that isn't playing anymore anyway, is MacGill. He would have played for the country and perhaps gotten 500+ wickets had it not been for Warne. Hodge is another. These players would get there chance to show what they are made of, and perhaps even go better than the main team.

Re: Bring back australia a?

I think Australia A was an insult to other teams, but i would love to see it, personally I would love to see Aus A play australia in a 1 test series and in a 1 dayer.

1. Jaques
2. Hughes
3. Klinger
4. Rogers
5. Hodge/S. Marsh
6. Hartley
7. Ronchi/Wade
8. S. Smith
9. Hastings/Tait
10. Christian
11. Nannes

V

1. Katich
2. Watson
3. Ponting
4. Clarke
5. Hussy
6. North
7. Haddin
8. Johnson
9. Hauritz
10. Siggle
11. Bollinger

Obviously Hilfenhaus deserves a spot in a side if he's fit.

Re: Bring back australia a?

Jaques, Rogers, Hodge, Hussey, White, Smith, Wade, Hastings, McKay, Clark, McGain

A combined NSW/VIC side is a true Australia A, dont need the other states :D

Re: Bring back australia a?

Oh you mean the SA Imports won a hit and giggle? Good on them, its bad news for CA who probably wanted a decent crowd for the final, but oh well

Re: Bring back australia a?

I don't think they'll be too unhappy with a sell-out at Adelaide oval.

But seriously, do you actually think that the entire Victorian side plus a few token NSW players just to try and hide your bias is really an ideal Australia A team, or are you just taking the piss?

Why do you want two keepers for Aus A??

And if you did want two keepers, why not Paine or Manou have been backing up Haddin for Australia recently?

I'd have Paine and Wade.

Re: Bring back australia a?

Hartley has an average of 41 this season and a century to go along with the same average from last season. Also broken some partnership records. He's not too bad a batsman, and his keeping has come a long way. I say he's definitely around the team.

Re: Bring back australia a?

I wouldn't pick Hartley over any of Paine, Wade, Manou or Ronchi. He's had a decent season with the bat but he's nowhere near good enough to be selected as a specialist batsman. My side would be:

1.Jacques
2.Rogers
3.Klinger
4.Khawaja
5.Cosgrove
6.S.Marsh
7.Paine
8.S.Smith
9.Geeves
10.Laughlin
11.Nannes

With the following just missing out:
D.Harris
Robinson
McKay
Manou and Wade
Birt
Rimmington

Re: Bring back australia a?

Paine is hit and miss, Wade is alright with the bat, Manou is quite terrible and Ronchi can't keep his place in the WA side, let alone a A side.

Personally I'd have either Hartley or Manou for keeping quality. Sure they may end up batting at 8 but they have both (especially Hartley) come a long way with the bat. Hartley has performed well over the past 3 seasons with the bat, better record than Haddin lately.

Paine is the only one you have mentioned that has real gloveman ability combined with batting.

Re: Bring back australia a?

What do you mean by 'hit and miss'? Paine ( looks an outstanding keeper and has scored centuries opening the batting for Australia in ODI's, something that Hartley could never dream of doing. Wade has proved himself a quality keeper-batsman, and while Ronchi is suspect with the gloves, has potential to destroy teams with the bat. Manou is arguably the best gloveman in Australia, whilst his batting is satisfactory, without being outstanding.

I would wager that Hartley is behind all four of these guys in the pecking order.

Re: Bring back australia a?

Paine has in ODIs, but batting 7 in Tests? I like him, but I'm not convinced he can do this for years on end.

Hartley averages 31, yes, but you have to take into account just three years ago he averaged 20. He has had three good seasons with the bat, sometimes being the only batting along with Nofke that Queensland had.

Also comparing his glove skills with everyone he is equal to Manou easily. He has come a long way with that as well, and is especially excellent up to the stumps. I have seen him take three catches down leg side to Hopes bowling from fine glances, standing up to the stumps in one match, just as an example. When he first started he was quite terrible but now is a different story.

Plus the selectors have made it known that he is third in line after Manou anyway, so I'd argue that he is ahead in the pecking order.

Re: Bring back australia a?

I really don't rate Hartley with the gloves... a couple of good catches does not a keeper make.

IMO somebody is going to have to do something pretty outstanding to surpass Paine as the heir apparent to Haddin in both forms of the game. Manou would currently probably push him out if the Test spot opened up, but age is not on his side.

I was only using those catches just as an example. I know that most people haven't seen him keep and almost everyone underrates him despite admitting they haven't seen him. It's fine if you have and don't rate it, I just ask if you have seen his keeping the past couple of years?

Pain in the one dayers, but not the longer form.

Re: Bring back australia a?

FC games I've only seen him when he's played in NSW. Limited overs, a bit more. Really it's difficult for anybody to see much of the players from other states these days.

I don't think he's bad, I just think he's nothing that special. IMO he's a better gloveman than most of the state keepers, although I do think Manou is a cut above. Paine is great with the bat and more than competent behind the stumps so I can't see any real reason why Hartley should be ahead of him at this stage.
