Gilchrist announces his retirement!

Just saw this on cricinfo:

Gilchrist announces his retirement

Adam Gilchrist, the Australian vice-captain, has just announced his retirement. The sudden news came at the end of the third day's play between Australia and India at the Adelaide Oval. It's not yet clear whether he will play one-day cricket but this will be his last Test.

Adam Gilchrist, the Australian vice-captain and wicketkeeper, has just announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The sudden news came at the end of the third day's play between Australia and India at the Adelaide Oval and only 24 hours after he broke the world record for number of catches.

Re: Gilchrist announces his retirement!

Shocking news, no-one expected this to happen so soon. Gilchrist has spent most of 2007 denying that he was retiring from the game and has kept us guessing right up until today. He even hinted he would have liked to stay on till 2009.

He will retire from test match cricket after the current match in Adelaide but he will play all of the Commonwealth Bank one-day series which involves India and Sri Lanka. After then, he will be retired from international cricket and I would say domestic cricket too as well as club cricket.

Gilchrist will go down as the greatest wicketkeeper/batsman of all time. His ability to turn the game on its head was phenomenal and it could be done in very little time. His strike power with the bat was truly mesmerizing, one of the cleanest strikers of the ball that the cricket world has ever seen. Gilchrist's innings in the World Cup final against Sri Lanka last year, his 57-ball hundred (second fastest test hundred ever) against England in Perth during the 2006-07 Ashes and his fighting innings against Pakistan at Bellerive Oval in 1999 will be some of his most remembered innings and ones which will go down as being vintage Adam Gilchrist. His character too, is a testament to the game, his honesty whenever he edged or hit the ball showed his true sportsmanship, something which has deteriorated in recent times.

This will be sad day for Australia when Gilchrist walks off the field for the final, he is a one in a hundred year player and his legacy will not be forgotten and will be a player that will be almost impossible to replace.

Well done Gilly, you will certainly remain in our minds and hearts for many years to come. @|

Re: Gilchrist announces his retirement!

The bloke was an absolute freak. Can't say I was that surprised, probably chose the right time, best to go out on top.

Luckily for the Aussies we have a couple of good replacement options in Haddin and Rhonchi. Haddin will definitely get first crack in Tests and probably 95% chance in ODI's.

Re: Gilchrist announces his retirement!

Brad Haddin will never get to do, what Gilchrist did, keep to the incomparable Shane Warne. Keeping to Warne, made Gilchrist from a very good wicket keeper, to a great wicket keeper. This is because, Gilchrist had to partly depend upon his reflexes. I got the impression because, Gilchrist was very quick with his movements behind the wicket, instead of taking his time, with Warne. This was the case, with the fast bowlers, too.
