Intercontinental Cup, Ireland v UAE, Feb 10-13

Ireland comes into this match 12 points behind Scotland, and will need to win it if they want to advance to the final against Canada.

The Irish had a fairly disappointing time at the recent WCL (where they weren't bad, just unlucky), and will be looking to turn things around in the longer form of the game.

Ireland batting first.

It's stumps on day 1.

Wait until you see what Ireland did on Day 1.

You won't believe it.

Here it comes:

This is an impressive score:

They really seem to have bounced back after the defeats in Nairobi:

Ireland 461-2 after day 1, 96 overs completed!!!

461! Not bad for one day.
Porterfield and Bray were out for respectable scores of 46 and 82, but Morgan and Botha have come in and simply refused to leave. Morgan is up to 182* (from only 200 balls) and Botha is currently on 136*.

Looks like Ireland will be declaring sometime tomorrow, and will probably hope to enforce the follow-on sometime later on during this match. I don't think I'm getting too far ahead of the game here if I say that Ireland will probably declare somewhere in the 600's.

They still need to bowl UAE out twice, which probably won't be easy, but right now I'd say it looks like Ireland has a better shot to face Canada in the final than Scotland does.

Ireland declared at 531-5

Botha out for 157. Morgan finished not out on 209!

UAE have just started their innings, and are off to a flying start, 48-0 after just 6 overs.

UAE 118-2 at tea on Day 2.

Not a bad start for them, but they've still got a ton of ground to make up.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Ireland v UAE, Feb 10-13

So much for their good start!

UAE 198-7 after 68.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Ireland v UAE, Feb 10-13

Oops, make that 199-8 after 69.

I'm sure the follow-on will be enforced here. The day is nearing an end, and the bowlers will all be fresh again tomorrow morning.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Ireland v UAE, Feb 10-13

Looks like UAE is 222-9 at stumps.
We'll have to wait until tomorrow to see about the follow-on.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Ireland v UAE, Feb 10-13

I thought UAE would be much better than that. had to be nice for Ireland to give them such a whipping though.

Cleazer, how do you rate UAE (overall)?

They're solidly in the second tier of Associates, along with teams like Bermuda and the USA.

They're a long ways behind teams like Ireland, Scotland, and Kenya though.
I think they just caught Scotland at the right time in their previous Intercontinental Cup match.
9 times out of 10, Scotland will beat them. That just happened to be the tenth.

UAE all out for 243 in their first innings.
As hoped, Ireland has enforced the follow-on!

UAE's second innings has gotten off to a poor start.
They're 24-3 after 14 overs.

Trent Johnston has taken all 3 wickets so far. (took 3 in the first innings too)

Looks like this match is over, and Ireland can book their place in the final against Canada. It doesn't even look like UAE will make the Irish bat twice.

Re: Intercontinental Cup, Ireland v UAE, Feb 10-13

Anyone find the difference between Associates in ODIs and the Intercontinental Cup a little interesting? The top 2 in the shorter form of the game are Scotland and Kenya, while the top two in the longer form are Canada and Ireland. That's a little odd.

Though to be fair to Ireland, all 4 of their losses at the WCL were in the final over, with 2 coming off the final delivery of the match! They just need to work on that "Luck o' the Irish".

Still interesting to have 4 different finalists for the 2 competitions.

UAE all out for 118.

This match was a blowout from start to finish.

Congratulations to Ireland for reaching the final.

I was wondering about the final.
According to this article, it might be on a neutral ground.
A great display once again by Ireland in the field, who now face Canada in the final of the Intercontinental Cup at a venue yet to be determined in May. The South of England remains the preferred location, but as of last week the ICC were having trouble locating a suitable ground, with Lord's and other County grounds not being available
