Muraliathran out of Twenty20 World Cup

Muttiah Muralitharan is out of the Twenty20 World Cup after sustaining an elbow injury whilst playing for Lancashire in England's County Cricket Championship on Wednesday. The Sri Lankan off-spinner walked off the ground complaining of a bicep strain after bowling 33.3 overs in the game against Kent.

The injury puts Murali out for up to six weeks. Dilruwan Perera is expected to be his replacement.

Bad news for Sri Lanka, they just lost their major strike weapon so it looks as if the quick bowlers are going to have to do the bulk of the work. There's no Malinga Bandara in the squad so that leaves the Sri Lankans without a specialist spinner. It looks as if D Perera, Jayasuriya and Mubarak will have to make up for Murali's absence.

They'll be looking to Slinga Malinga to be their major inspiration, without a doubt! I loved that exciting South Africa vs. Sri Lanka match in ODI World Cup in which Malinga rocked!!!

Someone has to suggest it, so I may as well be the one.

Now Murali doesn't have to confront the Aussie crowds in the upcoming tour.

He has only played once in Australia in the last 4 opportunities to do so, and that was in the Tsunami benefit match.

Is this elbow injury as serious as he says?

I suspect he will miss the Aussie tour due to the injury, but will make a better than predicted recovery in time for the 20/20 World Cup
