New Zealands tour of England

And the dependance on Vettori to take wickets is unhealthy.

Vettori only took one wicket in this game so he wasn't a prominent figure in this match with the ball. Martin is a decent opening bowler as is Kyle Mills and Iain O'Brien is getting into some sort of form. New Zealand's problem at the moment is their batting line-up, they just don't have the experience at international level. Jamie How is the only batter from their top four who is showing anything of substance at the moment, and even then it has been at a stretch. James Redmond has batted six times for six failures and Brendon McCullum has been rushed up the order to number three when in reality he shouldn't be batting above six.

New Zealand's two most experienced batsmen in the side, McCullum and Jacob Oram are out and out sloggers, something which would worry the NZ selectors. The departure of Stephen Fleming and the abscene of Scott Styris has hurt them and has exposed a very young top order. I'm not sure why Styris isn't there, he is a patient player and adds stability to a line-up which seems to be lacking an anchor figure at the moment.

Jamie How, James Redmond, Ross Taylor, Daniel Flynn and Gareth Hopkins have played a total of 27 tests between them. Add's McCullum's 35 and Oram's 29 and that makes a total of 91 tests. In comparison, England's top seven have a total of 278 with Tim Ambrose the only player that has played less than ten tests. England already have a massive advantage and that's before they even start playing the game. The Kiwis are lacking a player than can provide some experience at the top of the order as well as acting as a mini mentor. The guidance just isn't there at the moment and I'm sure that the NZ administration would be slightly worried. The evidence is in the stats, England batted for 126.5 overs for the game whilst NZ could only manage 119 overs from two attempts. They're desperately in need of an older player for that batting line-up.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

New Zealand won the toss and sent England in.

England are 1/70 off 16 overs with Bell on 37 and Pietersen on 13.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

England scored 5/307 from their 50 overs. Kevin Pietersen scored a fine century, making 110 not out and propelling England to a big score. Ian Bell made 46, Paul Collingwood batted with Pietersen for the majority of the innings and made a handy 64. It didn't end there as Owais Shah came in and smacked 49 from only 25 balls which included 4 fours and 3 sixes.

The bowling side of things saw Mason, Styris, Vettori and Southee take one wicket each with Ross Taylor running out Ian Bell. Vettori was the main reason why New Zealand didn't give away 330+, he took 1/38 from ten overs while the rest of the bowlers were going for 5.7 runs per over or more.

In reply, New Zealand have started quickly but they've lost Brendon McCullum in the process. McCullum scored a quickfire 36 from just 27 deliveries before falling to Stuart Broad. Jamie How is on 12 and James Marshall is 3 not out.

A good chase coming up if NZ can hold it together.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Marshall plays one to gully but Collingwood is there and a lightning throw sees him out by a few inches.

2/61 after 14 overs. New Zealand have scored only six runs from the last five overs.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

NZ 3/91 now after 22 overs. How was out to Broad for a sluggish 20 from 45 balls. Broad has an impressive 2/11 from seven overs which includes two maidens.

The Kiwis have slowed right down now after such a fast start, the asking rate has crept up to 7.76 per over now. Styris and Taylor, the two men at the crease have plenty of work to do.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

NZ battling now, 5/131 in the 31st over. Luke Right toom the wicket of Ross Taylor and Graeme Swann claimed Scott Styris.

Daniel Flynn is up to 19 not out and Gareth Hopkins has just joined him and is on one.

NZ have it all ahead of them now, the run rate required is now over nine runs per over.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Flynn is adjudged caught behind off Swann's bowling but replays show the ball actually came off his thigh pad. Nonetheless, Flynn has to go and is out for 34.

6/165 with Vettori walking to the crease.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Collingwood gets Hopkins with the first ball of his second over. Bopara takes a nice catch at backward point after Hopkinds cuts at a wide one but proves unsuccessful.

7/179 at the start of the 41st over. Vettori on 8, needing more than 13 an over now. Kyle Mills is in now, he can hit a ball.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Vettori out for eight now, only two balls after Hopkinds departed.

8/182, Mills on one and Southee, the new batter, is on zero.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Collingwood finishes the game, getting Mills and finally Southee, both in the same over. NZ are all out for 193 giving England victory by 114 runs, falling well short of the required target.

Collingwood finishes with handy figures of 4/15 from 2.5 overs.

An easy win for England, Pietersen set them up and then the bowlers finished the job. They now take a 1-0 lead in the five game series. The next match is at Edgebaston on Wednesday.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

god what are new zealand playing at
no one really is in good form how is how doing he was playing well in the second test??

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Game is underway but it has started raining again. Play did start though with the game being reduced to 29 overs due to the rain that they've had at the ground.

England were sent in by New Zealand and are 3/77 after 12.4 overs. Luke Wright has top score with 52 but was just dismissed by Grant Elliott, who is on debut. Earlier, Ian Bell was out for a duck and Kevin Pietseren fell cheaply, out to Michael Mason for 13.

Elliott, Mason and Kyle Mills all have one wicket each.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Play to resume very shortly. Game is now 24 overs-a-side, Grant Elliott to resume the bowling.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

Bopara is run out for 10 after a terrible mix-up. Both he and Paul Collingwood finished at the same end after Bopara pushed one to covers and it took a few replays to tell us who was out.

4/80.

Re: New Zealands tour of England

so unlucky for New Zealand, probably would have won if it wasn't for the rain, especially with the way McCullum was batting.

The next match will be on Saturday.
