Premier Cricket 2011/12

McGain still rather clearly is, judging on what he's done in the past few years when he has been playing for Prahran. You could probably throw a sheet over most of them after that, with Holland a bit ahead of the pack.

The pack consisting of Maxwell, Hart, Salpietro, McDonald, Sandri, O'Shea, King, Jones, Sturrock and Roberts, roughly in that order. Haven't seen enough of Smyth, Benbow to include.

I think McDonald is a bit overrated, his last name does help him alot. Had match figures of 1-66 off 9 overs in the futures match just completed. Don't know how he got a big bash contract, goes at 8's and 9's in 20 over cricket

I agree on both your points, he's not the greatest T20 bowler - saw him hit around last year in person, and didn't deserve a Big Bash contract. But he can get people out more than most on that list, whereas nearly all the other spinners require the batsman to be going hard at them. Quality flipper, and gets good revolutions on the ball.

And he's certainly not the first spinner to be taken downtown by the Gobler.

McGain is still the best spin bowler in the country.

Mcdonald seems to be next in line behind holland and hart seems to trail him.
Are mcdonald and hart good enough to play first class cricket?

His flipper may be alright, on his day he is good. But like any other spinner on their day they are very good. His bad is really bad and we don't see enough of his good days. He only took 20 wickets in 16 games last year and going at 3.79 an over. There were many spinners with more wickets than him last year.

Mcgain is an exception, the man is still a super player. The only other spinners who took 30 wickets in the home and away season were Hart and O'Shea. Hart took 31 poles and averaged 26 wth an economy rate of over 4 and O'Shea took 30 and going at less than 3 an over. Rose is a good bowler but as you said before he bowls too quick but does put pressure on you.

Last year's full list of spinners (of those with 20 or more wickets in the full season incl. finals)

McGain (Prahran) 40 @ 12.8
Hart (Geelong) 39 @ 24.8
Rose (CSM) 30 @ 16.9
O'Shea (Northcote) 30 @ 17.8
Nalesnyik (Uni) 27 @ 14.9
Holland (Frankston) 25 @ 23.0
Hollins (Foots-Edge) 22 @ 17.1
Sturrock (Melb) 22 @ 26.2
Jones (Foots-Edge) 20 @ 11.5
Benbow (Frankston) 20 @ 14.0
McDonald (Richmond) 20 @ 32.9

McDonald well down on that list, McGain clearly the best, Nalesnyik the one that has snuck under the radar.

Imagine talking yourself up on here Fuzz. Is it hard to say O'Shea rather than me

Been a tad quiet on this board lately. 3 rounds into the season any surprises so far? Brett Forsyth seems to have captured his form pre Prahran. The t20 big bash league is on during December/janurary, players from interstate that are playing for either Melbourne team are able to play premier cricket when not playing. Following players from memory are: tait, readon, Faulkner, heal, Simpson, Razzaq, affridi (there may be more, can't remember) be interesting to see if and where they end up.

You'd imagine that it would only be the guys who aren't playing regularly in the T20 league that will be picked for Grade Teams. These players also get a discount on their playing points, if I remember correctly. Maybe Reardon, Heal, Simpson and Faulkner might bob up at some stage.

In the end, it all depends who these interstate players get along with while they are playing for the stars or renegades and that may sway them to come and play for the same grade team as there mate.

Or who has a spare bit of cash to throw at them.

Funnily enough, will probably be the same sides (Melb, St. Kilda) where they have their mates from state cricket at.

Yeah the word around the club (Melbourne) is that macca will draw a few down to play some of the t20's. Rumour has it Tait will play down at richmond with bear.

FWIW healzo would be a great pick up for a team that wanted a spinner to keep it tight.

With Nannes, tait and Maxwell playing for the renegades, and with Helmot and mash being apart of the coaching staff, I would not be surprised to see Tait and Nannes playing a few games for the lions

Nannes' interest in playing club cricket has been in the negatives for a fair while. I'd imagine that Tait's would be similar, he doesn't bother getting through 50 overs of international or state cricket any more, it'd be surprising if he "lowers himself" to play in Melbourne's Grade cricket.

I was thinking more along the lines of the mid week 20/20 comp

Without meaning to put Premier Cricket down, why would Tait, Nannes and co. even bother? Those guys don't play for free.

Country round being played this weekend (all games start at 11am)
SATURDAY OCTOBER 29
Footscray Edgewater vs Casey South Melbourne at Numurkah
Melbourne Uni vs Essendon at Meerlieu
Northcote vs Ringwood at Barooga
Frankston Peninsula vs Dandenong at Frankston (Traralgon unavailable)
Prahran vs Fitzroy Doncaster at Mooroopna
St Kilda vs Melbourne at Moama
Hawthorn Monash Uni vs North Melbourne at Maryborough
Richmond vs Camberwell Magpies at Warrion
Geelong vs Carlton at Merrivale

With a quarter of the season done, fair to say that Essendon have been the early surprise packets. Reid's gone up the extra step, and Howell's a great pick-up for them - gives depth to their batting which has relied on the big two for a long time, and can step in with the ball when required.

Fitzroy-Doncaster are living up to the quality of their list, but they're a different proposition without Maxwell. In a weird way, I think that his loss hurts them more with the ball than the bat, as they become a little bit one-dimensional. Prahran continue in their professional One Day way, and having McGain available all year really does make them more of a 2 day threat.

Besides St Kilda down low, table is pretty similar to what you'd expect really. You'd think St Kilda will get a bit of momentum up soon, Rummans will probably start reeling off some tons and now they're back on the Junction things will be looking rosy down around Lakeside Drive.

being someone form outside of melbourne but still keeps an eye on premier cricket. carlton being on top is that a surprise or not? Whats there list like?
