Shield Discussion Thread 20/21.

Slightly incorrect last year Hughes 665 @ 44, Burns 515 @51, M Harris 442 @49, Just because he played more games doesn't make him the best performer, Burns was the leading opener and Harris wasn't too far behind, but I do understand what your saying, but I will still ask name an innings away from home by Hughes in the last 2 years. I'll give you his scores away from home

last year 6, 66, 0, 12, 1, 46, 10, 19 (didn't play in Perth)

2018/19 60, 18, 8, 14, 1, 6, 7, 68, 61, 26,

so from 9 games away from home, he scored 429 runs @ 24 do you still think he deserves selection for Australia? He's just a Sydney specialist batsman and extremely lucky to play there, because doubtful he would be selected for any other state if he only got to play 1 game in Sydney per year. But I do see where your coming from, not that I agree but then again I see Warner as a poor selection when Australia plays overseas but Australia is reluctant to drop him, and let him play because of his excellent career in Australia.

Before you argue that it would be the same for all players that batting at home is better than away I'll show Joe Burns away from Qld overall av 40
last year only 1 game on national selection 93,12 (I'll do an extra year to give approximately the same number of innings)
2018/19 64, 7, 6, 38, 18, 74, 60, 80, 31, 3
2017/18 11, 70, 81, 103, 202, 4, 97, 24.

10 matches away from home 1078 @ 53.9 so batting at the Gabba is a hindrance to Burns, but it does show why Burns was selected and why Hughes is not selected. Australian selection should be what a player does away as well as at home, and the closer they get to identical averages the more consistent the player and you get a true reflection of ability. Hughes has a big discrepancy in home and away averages and should not be selected

Good point. Where did you find home/away stats? Joe I will continue to pick as he can produce a century at any time. Not so Harris. He seems to find the step up to a baggy green beyond him.
How long do we continue to go with Warner as his away record is abysmal. Broad put him thru the cleaners in the Ashes. Give him the Sth African tour in '21.. not India and Sri Lanka in '22 as he averages less than 30 in both those countries. The Poms are touring here that year so they may keep that for Warner's swansong.

I use Wikipedia sheffield shield

each season gives all the scorecards quickly, other sites too involved, I think ESPN have a site
Never knew Wiki had cricket stats. ESPN has Cricinfo. Unable to find that particular stat there.

Just took a look blowed if I can find Shield home and away details. Can you post the link per chance as interested in this stat. Cricinfo dont have it.

There are some blokes in the current baggy green lineup that struggle to covert to triple figures. Travis Head is the prime example. So when a bloke who has shown a good conversion rate at domestic level over the past three years is told by a national selector that merely converting to triple figures is not sufficient for a national call up you have to wonder why. The batsman in question is Blues opener Dan Hughes and new selector George Bailey has told him he is on CA's radar for an opening spot but if he wants to take the next step he has to convert those shield centuries into biggies.. a double. There is no pleasing everyone.

Really a 32 year old batsman with 7 FC centuries in total in his career, all I believe were scored in Sydney. 7 centuries!!!

Jake Weatherald has 7 and is only 25. Cameron Bancroft has 14 and is only 28, Marcus Harris has 13 and is only 28. 7 centuries.... you bias NSW supporters make me laugh.

Just another push by the bias NSW dominated media, to get another NSW player a baggy green, means nothing anymore. If Hughes gets selected its nothing but a bias joke, and you wonder why people no longer follow the longer form of the game. Criticize the South Australian with the 42 average at test level, yet promote the NSW player who has done nothing outside NSW at FC level, and you can't see the bias?

Yeh you alluded to that fact that they had all been on his home tracks. I did ask you where that info came from as I was unable to find out and if possible post me a link. Not that I am doubting you. be good for future reference.
Yes Weatherald needs to be getting a call from George too. I'd have him over Harris. Tho he averages @5 less than does Hughes, Jake's game is maturing every year and as you say he is only 25. I have to admit that debuting a bloke at pushing 32 is a big ask.. unless you are of Mike Hussey quality.. and Hughes aint.

The call came from CA directly.. the biased or otherwise NSW dominated media are simply reporting that fact.
Take a gander at the national premier cricket thread.

Daniel Hughes last year scored 2 centuries all in one game against that classy South Australian side at Bankstown Oval, Sydney 103 and 136.

In 2018/19, he scored a century 134 once again against that classy South Australian side at the SCG, and 116 against Qld in Canberra

In 2017/18 didn't score any centuries

In 2016/17 I stand corrected he did score a century against WA in Perth in the final round of the year, but that result didn't matter NSW finished 5th that year.

In 2015/16 once again I once again stand corrected he did score a century against the 2nd last placed WA in Perth and against the last place Tasmania in Hobart, but in my defence 5 years ago is testing the memory of an obscure meaningless game, in a year when Victoria won the shield against SA. NSW against the 2nd last and last placed teams doesn't hold my attention.

So there is Hughes record, he never has scored a century against Victoria. Has never scored a century in Victoria, Qld or SA. Hasn't scored a century away from home in the last 3 years, and has only scored 4 FC centuries in the last 3 years. I can definitely see why his name is being mentioned as a baggy green candidate.

Regarding a discussion we were having about Australia cheating you may want to read this

So it appears the umpires saw Australia "cheating" in the 2 tests prior that they told the cameramen to watch Australia in the 3rd test and that's how they were caught. So are you still going to say it was just David Warner? They all knew it was happening including Starc and Hazlewood. Cheats!!!!

I asked for the link to home/away ratio not more Blues bashing. Give it a rest mate. Also give Sandpapergate a rest too.

There is no link, you have to do your own research and mathematics. Surely you can add, subtract, multiply and divide.

It's not blues bashing, it is just replying to unsupported comments you make. The replies only appear to be blues bashing because your posts are so unsubstantiated parochial NSW rubbish.

Just for you, I've book-marked the above article, so every time, you go on about Smith, Starc, Hazlewood, I'll reply with that link, you'll know what it means. :thumbsu:

I am becoming more and more convinced you are my old sparring partner Mike. Please deny it. Well if you wanna continue with this inane childish crap leave me out of it pal. I joined this forum to discuss and debate cricket in a sensible manner. If you dont and only wanna troll perhaps a word to admin eh.

No, enjoy reading books, but why write a lot of stuff when there's no need to do so - you clearly haven't heard of the saying less can be more... it's like me working on a sign, if I write a heap of wording on it people are not really going to bother to read it... if I put the main points on the sign though & don't over pollute it with wording they're much more likely to read through it.

I've got plenty to contribute - as said though don't don't know that many of your domestics players, so makes it harder to post... give you a debate on tactics, skill sets, strength & weaknesses of bowlers & batsmens etc... or do you just want to constantly post stats, you don't seem to have much insight.

What books do you read Mal?
I like reading about social history and autobiographies of famous people, I recently read David Jasons autobiography, found it very interesting and would probably like to read it again.

I enjoy books on history in general Jessica, biographies, autobiographies - I bet David Jason's book was a great read, I'll have to check it out... he's one of my favourite actors, thought he was superb as DI Frost in A Touch Of Frost tv series.

Really "Bro" shakin in my boots here. Books scare you "Chip"? Attention span of a Gnat or just illiterate? see I can give as good as I get

So what your really saying is you have nothing to contribute to this cricket website, apart from harassing legitimate Australian cricket followers, creating a sh*tstorm as you put it, once again obviously you have no regard for the youth that see this site. So that makes you an admitted troll and it would be up to the administrators of the site to ban you. What you going to do Baggers???? Or do we play favourites here Chief????

I was going to disappear back to my my other Non de Plume on this site Baggers, having made my point, but now I just don't know, have you really learnt to be respectful to others? Why do I have a Non de Plume? fellow posters on this site found your posts insensitive to what they are trying to instil in their children and asked me to intervene. I'm quite sure the term sh*tstorm is exactly what parents don't want to see on this site.
Cool it "bro". Chief has a limit to his patience..
