Shoaib Ahktar banned for five years

Shoaib Ahktar, the Pakistani fast bowler has been banned for five years by the Pakistani Cricket Board (PCB) after violating the players' code of conduct. The ban extends towards cricket in Pakistan itself but also playing for Pakistan outside of the country. The ban does leave him free to play in the upcoming Indian Premier League and anywhere after that if he so wishes.

The decision comes off the back of a disciplinary hearing in February in which Ahktar was charged by the Pakistan board for criticising the entity in public. It was a reaction to being dropped for a PCB "A" contract right down to a retainership.

Interestingly, leg-spinner Danish Kaneria was served with a severe reprimand after also publically criticising the Pakistani board. Once again, it was about a change of contract which saw the leggie demoted from a "B" to a "C" contract.

Ahktar is expected to appeal the decision.

A very surprising decision and one that will virtually end Shoaib's international career unless he can reverse the decision on appeal or overturn it in court. It seems the PCB is fed up with Shoaib's outrageous antics and sees him as nothing more than a hinderance to the Pakistan cricket team. You also have to remember that Shoaib is on a two-year probation period after hitting Mohammad Asif with a cricket bat in September last year, right before the start of the Twenty20 World Championship.

A sad end to a talented career, if his appeals are unsuccessful, Akhtar will most likely finish his playing days on the county circuit, would be interesting to see if he would play Australian domestic cricket while county cricket is in its off-season. He would certainly draw a few crowds.

Thoughts on this?

A real character of the game, shame he had to go out in this way.

Not surprising he went out in controversy as he was in it much of his career.

Shoaib deserved to be banned for his outrageous and malicious behaviour.
Althought it is a fact that the PCB handles its players unprofessionally, Shoaib should not have condemned his employers by going to the media.

He has been the perennial bad boy of Pakistan cricket and his career has come to a screeching halt with this body blow from Ashraf, the big-wig of the PCB.

The PCB must now go back to Azhar Mehmood and Abdul Razzaq who are currently participating in the ICL to solve some of their cricketing woes and bury Akhtar's careeer forever.

And its about time

Not disappointed that you won't be seeing the Rwalipindi Express no more?

I know I am, in full flight he was more interesting to watch then any bowler over the last 8 years.

Re: Shoaib's five-year ban upheld

Didn't know he was allowed to play in the IPL

will be great to watch him back sending down the fire bolts, even though he might be a little overweight and underdone for matches

Re: Shoaib's five-year ban upheld

He's allowed to play anywhere outside of Pakistan at the moment I think. Would probably go play county cricket in England after the IPL.

Would love to see him play domestic cricket in Australia, he would no doubt draw crowds.

Re: Shoaib's five-year ban upheld

Shoaib Akhtar's ban has been reduced to 18 months after a Pakistan Cricket Board appointed appellate tribunal reached a unanimous verdict and decided to reduce the penalty given to the fast bowler. The tribunal based its decision on the fact that Akhtar had shown remorse, made a public apology and also promised to reform himself which may include some future counselling. However, Akhtar will have to pay a fine of R's 7 million (Pakistan currency) to the PCB, that's about US$105,000 dollars.

Akhtar may again appeal the decision in an attempt to further reduce the ban placed against him. So far, Akhtar has completed almost 10 weeks of his ban.

Akhtar's ban reduced to 18 months

Surprise, surprise, Pakistan go soft on disciplining their players. The PCB seem to be harsh in the early stages of these incidents but once again they've gone soft on a player who has clearly been out of line in the past. A prime example was Mohammad Asif's ban for drugs which was dismissed after an appeal was made.

Anyway, this appears to not end Shoaib's career although it will be hard to come back into the Pakistan side after 18 months out. He might find it easier if the ban is further reduced and that isn't out of the question at the moment.

Re: Shoaib Ahktar banned for five years

Disgraceful but not suprise they are as corrupt as the indian cricket board

Re: Shoaib Ahktar banned for five years

Good to see that his ban has been reduced.

Pity that Ahktar's reputation has been damaged all because of these things in the past couple of years.

Re: Shoaib Ahktar banned for five years

Yeah how dare they ruin the reputation of a good, hard-working, honest...... Oh wait a minute.... my mistake.
