Silly question about catches

What was up with the commentators saying that Ponting's appealed catch hit the ground and would not be out? Didn't he have control of the ball before it hit the turf? Can the ball not hit the ground at all even if it has been caught?

Re: Silly question about catches

he didnt have COMPLETE control, i.e he didnt he didnt willfully put it to the ground

That makes no sense at all breeno.

The fielder must have complete control over the ball and his own movement. It could be argued that Popnting was not in control of his own movement when he hit the ground and even though he had control over the ball he grounded it before he had control over his body movement.

Look the rules of cricket up on google. Lords have them there for everyone to see and it is easy to find the rule in question. Ponting obviously feels he was in control of everything and Richie Benaud was one who agreed with his interperetation.

see by he didnt willfully put it to the ground i meant, it wasnt his choice to put it to the ground, cos he couldnt control himself
