Sledging banned

The ICC has taken the drastic step of banning sledging after India's eventful tour of India.

The use of swear words has now been banned on the field and the new rules will target any offensive language used by players towards other players, umpires or spectators in order to "raise the bar" and to set new standards.

The ICC has also sent a letter to international match officials, captains and chief executives over personal attacks which are viewed as "obscene, offensive or insulting.

Sledging banned by ICC

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

What a joke. They've effectively removed the majority of the mental pressure put on mostly batsman but also bowlers and of course fielders. It's now another tactic which captains and players can't use on the field because of a few things said in a series which were taken out of context.

Sledging has always been a part of cricket, the increased pressure put on players from words has forever been a part of the sport. Most of it is harmless and at the end of the day is left on the field. But, the ICC has gone too far with this and it's no surprise to see Speed is at the centre of this, the quicker he goes the better. They're turning this game into soccer, and we all know how soft that game is.

Re: Sledging banned

stupid stupid idea.

I can see stopping players from swearing, etc. but banning all sledging is stupid.

My cousin has season tickets for the White Sox (baseball) and he sits near the opposing teams bullpen (look it up ;) ) and he was asked to leave by security after calling an opposing pitcher "mayonaise arm". I think that is a pretty clever insult, and apparently the guy didn't like it and had him removed!

Re: Sledging banned

Soon they will bring in the rule that when a batsman play's a good shot the fielding side needs to applaud it. :D

Re: Sledging banned

The players are going to have to learn to keep their traps shut in future.

It is unfortunate that the ICC have had to deal with the situation in this way.

Re: Sledging banned

No. Come on. Outside racial abuse and maybe family insults, sledging is part of the game and should be here to stay.
Malcolm Speed as head of the ICC is an absolute joke. And it's usually us that have suffered becuase of him.
Here is a small list and there probably would be many more about how he has favoured sub-continental teams:
2003: Match referee Clive Lloyd, who as we all know is black, decides not to charge Australia's Darren Lehmann with racially abusing Sri Lankan players when, after giving his wicket away, he mutters in frustration "black ********s", or something like that. ICC chief Speed overrules Lloyd's decision and Lehmann is eventually suspended for 5 matches.
What I think of it: On this occassion Speed was right here. You cannot say something like that and not get punished.
2005: Virender Sehwag is banned for 1 test for excessive appealing in the 2nd of 3 tests against South Africa. India defy the ICC and match referee Mike Denness and play Sehwag in the 3rd and final test. This leads to the ICC by calling the test as unofficial in the record books.
What I think of it: Is that all the ICC can do?
2006: In the England vs. Pakistan test series, umpires Darrel Hair of Australia and Billy Doctrove of the West Indies find that Pakistan have tampered with the ball and award England 5 penalty runs. Captain Inzamam ul-Haq and the team refuse to come back onto the ground, leading the umpires to award England the match by forfeit for the 1st and so far only time in test cricket's 131 year history. By the time they come back on the match is officially declared over. Inzamam is found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute and banned for 4 ODIs. Hair is stood down as an international umpire.
What I think of it: Hair was a scapegoat. It was a decision between 2 umpires, not 1. If the umpire was a Sri Lankan, would he be the 1 everyone blames?
2008: Matches between India and Australia are rocked by verbal accusations from both sides. Most notably, Harbahjan Singh is suspended for 3 tests after being found guilty of racially abusing opponent Andrew Symonds. India threaten to boycott if it is not overturned. Harbahjan is eventually found guilty of abusive language and fined 50% of his match fee, despite an appalling disciplinary record.
What I think of it: While Harbahjan probably did not racially abuse Symonds, the fact that they threatened to boycott even after they were allowed to appeal the decision just shows what a joke the ICC are in leadership skills.
Then there's also, like Kram has pointed out, the ICC awarding the sub-continent the next World Cup instead of us, despite the fact it's at least the 3rd time for India and every other major nation has hosted it since the last time the sub-continent hosted it (1996), while we've had it just once.
And what next? Is the ICC going to ditch international cricket and traditional cricket and allow the BCCI to take over cricket itself?
Are they just going to say that the IPL can do what they want, and then other nations suffer because of it?

For once I agree with you, poorly handled by te ICC.

Re: Sledging banned

Recently Sledging has been overmark. There was to much of it when India was in Austrlia. Although the ICC are trying to ban it, It will almost be impossible to stop all sledging.

Re: Sledging banned

LMAO, what are the ICC thinking with this?

I hoped they checked with India first to see if they are allright with this :)
