South Africa in England

Re: South Africa in England

All out for 194. Panesar cleans up Ntini to finish the innings.

Graeme Smith top scored with 46, de Villiers made 39 and Amla 36 in what was a great comeback by the English bowlers. South Africa were sitting pretty at 1/103 but enter Stephen Harmison who removed Smith and Amla with successive deliveries which started the rot for the Proteas.

Jimmy Anderson finished with 3/43, Harmison, Broad and Panesar all picked up two with Flintoff getting the other remaining wicket.

Disappointing from South Africa. Top order gave them another good start but they failed to captalise and they've really just fallen in a heap. Kallis, Prince and Boucher all failed as South Africa's middle order gave in pretty meekly. They have a lot of work to do to try and drag themselves back into this contest.

As for England, what a turnaround. It looked to be same old, same old but Harmison broke through for two quick ones which seemed to fire the rest of the English bowlers up and they went to work on the South African batting line-up and came up trumps.

Advantage to England at the moment, an hour to go till play ends but they'll probably take the extra half hour. Still 25 overs to be bowled, over rate has been a little poor today.

Re: South Africa in England

All England at the moment. They are 3/148 in reply to South Africa's first innings effort of 194. Pietersen up to 50 not out, Cook was out for 39 and Ntini has all three wickets.

Re: South Africa in England

England were eventually bowled out for 316, Pietersen made exactly 100, Collingwood fought well for 61, he and KP combined for 108, again showing they bat well together. Stephen Harmison made a handy innings down the order, scoring 49 not out before being stranded on that figure after Panesar was run out as Harmison pushed one into covers trying to go for 50. Panesar hesistated and Harris' throw was good, a direct hit and Monty was out, run out again!

So, a lead of 122 for England, Ntini ended up taking five wickets, a much needed return to form for him. Harris took three and the run out with Jacques Kallis claiming the other wicket.

In reply, South Africa started terribly, captain Graeme Smith out for a duck, LBW to Jimmy Anderson. Neil McKenzie made 29 before Stuart Broad got the better of him getting an inside edge which clattered into the stumps. Hashim Amla has batted well though, 71 not out and holding the Proteas together, Kallis is not on two and South Africa are 2/110, trailing by only 12 runs.

Important partnership now for South Africa, Kallis needs to score big as does Amla if they want to win. England will be looking for some quick wickets when play restarts due to the rain that is currently falling.

Re: South Africa in England

Amla only added five more runs on day four, Kallis also failed as did Boucher and Prince also struggled, making only 24, giving Flintoff his first wicket of the innings. It's all been left to AB de Villiers, he's up to 78 not out currently and he's doing his team proud. Paul Harris is 18 not out, he's no slouch with the bat. South Africa have moved to 7/273, leading by 151. You'd think they would need to double that to stay in the game.

Anderson and Harmison have two wickets with singles to Broad, Panesar and Flintoff.

Englnad have the advantage but they need to remove one of these two quickly. Still two hours remaining in the day so there's plenty of time left.

Re: South Africa in England

SAf lead by 160 with 3 wickets in hand.

AB deVilliers 82 and Harris 20

England in the box seat to save a little pride from this series.

Re: South Africa in England

Finally, England get a wicket. Regulation edge by Harris off Broad and Flintoff snaffles it at second slip.

8/313, de Villiers up to 97.

Re: South Africa in England

Panesar gets rid of de Villiers for 97, falling short of his century, one he deserved. Ab came down the pitch and tried to whip the ball through midwicket but he didn't connect and the ball hit leg stump.

9/313, Ntini joins Nel in the middle, Nel hasn't scored from two balls faced.

Re: South Africa in England

Broad picks up his third wicket of the innings, this time it's Ntini who's gone for 2 and South Africa are all out for 318, a lead of 196.

England will need 197 runs to win, there's about an hour of play remaining. South Africa will want at least two wickets before the close of play here to try and challenge for the win.

Re: South Africa in England

England cruised to victory, only losing four wickets in the chase. Cook and Strauss put on 123 for the first wicket and that really was the end of the game, Cook made 67 and Strauss with Collingwood making 25 not out to see England home.

Ntini and Harris picked up a couple of wickets each. A welcome return to form from Ntini. He's been down in recent games back this is a good game from him, probably South Africa's best player in this match.

So, South Africa win the series 2-1 and we now head into the one-dayers. South Africa will play three tour games, one against the PCA Masters XI and two against the England Lions (England "A") before the first and only Twenty20 International to be held on the 20th. After that, the first one-dayer gets underway on the 22nd at Headingley which is a Day/Night game.

So, no result in the last game. England cap off a very good one-day series, they were too good for South Africa with games two and three being woefully one-sided. They even ended up winning game four quite comfortably also.

South Africa will be very disappointed with that series, they were really only competitive in game one and for most of game four until Andrew Flintoff blasted them out of the game. The second and third games were terrible, showing total ineptitude with the bat, similar to how Bangladesh went against Australia in their recent series. Injuries and a lack of form for various players hasn't helped and they'll need to regroup back at home.

Onto the next few months and England go back to their domestic season which isn't too far away from finishing up. From there, they have a tour of India which begins in November. For South Africa, they get a short break before their domestic season fires up for the summer. Not long after that, they play host to Bangladesh, that series also begins in November.
