Super Eights

And the Super 8s are the Test playing nations. No upsets or anything out of the ordinary happening.

Some very big games coming up. Everyone looks pretty even this time round, the only ones that look a little underdone are the Saffas, but then again, it is a tournament :D

Re: Group Stages Chat

Group E:

A1: Pakistan
B2: New Zealand
C1: South Africa
D2: England

Group F:

B1: Sri Lanka
A2: Australia
C2: India
D1: West Indies

Group F seems more tough than E ?

It does seem that way.

Going to be tough to get out of there alive.

Would love to see Sri Lanka and Australia get through to the semis from there, but I actually think it will be the Windies and India progressing from there.

Re: Super Eights

England on their way to topping group E :D

Group F is a little overrated, their previous T20 performances means the group is full of teams who dont get the job done in the format in the past, on T20I performances, Group E is the stronger of the 2

Re: Super Eights

I just bring some truth to the discussions, like how 1 group has the defending champions and no1 in the world, the Kiwis who beat Australia in their last meeting and are a strong T20 side, England with 2 of the stars of the IPl and a couple of decent sloggers behind them and South Africa, the no2 ranked nation in the world

Whilst the other group has 2 sides who didnt even make the 2nd round last year, the West Indies who are very hit and mostly miss and Sri Lanka who dont really have any stars yet always get talked up

In terms of rankings

Group E has a total of 345 ranking points
Group F has a total of 325 ranking points

Yet everyone claims Group F is the toughest...

Re: Super Eights

You bring up some fair points eddie, but on the face of it I just feel group F is more dangerous. If I supported England I would honestly pick group E to play in first. They are both full of quality anyway with the minnows failing to get through.

Re: Super Eights

I dont know, I would love to be in a group with India :D

New Zealand worry me as do South Africa, obviously the perfect group would include India, Pakistan and probably the West Indies or South Africa, both have very big differences between their best and worst

Re: Super Eights

Australia are all over India at the moment, the Aussies batted first, scored 5/185 with Warner making 72, Watson 54 and David Hussey made 35. Harbhajan Singh bowled very well, 0/15 from four overs including a maiden, Ashish Nehra picked up two wickets but unfortunately for those two they didn't have any other mates out there.

In reply, India are 7/56, Nannes has three wickets, Tait, Johnson and Smith all have one and then there was the comical run-out of Jadeja about two minutes ago. He played the ball to mid-on, cruised down the pitch then realised he had to hurry up as the fielder gathered the ball. In the end he ran sideways down the pitch into the umpire and then was sent on his way from a David Hussey direct hit. Thank god Rohit Sharma is there for India, he has 27 of his team's score.

India look like amatuer hour at the moment, their running between wickets is just disgraceful for international level. And the shot selection has been just as bad also, very, very ordinary stuff.

Re: Super Eights

Give White a bowl! :D

It was a superb opening spell by Nannes, not too many batsmen in the world who could play him on a fast track, would have been interesting if they got to play South Africa and on a quick pitch, apparently England is playing Sidebottom because he gave Smith and Kallis some problems with the left arm angle

Smith can't play left-arm seam bowling so it makes sense, seems to fall over a bit and is prone to LBW.

Group E is tougher too. India looked ordinary tonight, too much of that IPL rubbish on slow tracks and when it came to good fast-paced bowling on a good deck they were completely outclassed. West Indies are very hit and miss and Sri Lanka are missing Muralitharan so they will hurt badly from him not being there. Australia have it fairly easy I think, funny to think they were the lowest-seeded test side coming into the tournament.

Australia won by 49 runs in the end, Sharma finished on 76 not out, next highest score was Harbhajan with 13. No other India batman got double figures although Extras did with exactly 10.

David Warner was Man of the Match.

Re: Super Eights

I had no doubt that Australia was the team to beat, their ranking was low because they have never taken the game seriously, but now they are with some proper T20 players + Clarke and Haddin :p

Luckily for Australia they play Sri Lanka at Barbados and the final is also there, India did well in St Lucia so it could be a slower deck, although Australia did beat Pakistan there, but they will have to play at their best in the semi final, I dont think it will suit the Windies big hitters for the final super 8's game either

Sucks to see that the next 4 nights have England and Australia occupying the last slot of the night, Australias last game is even at 7am in the morning, but the semis and the final are 1:30

If Sri Lanka get up tonight then they should be pretty certain to make the semi finals, but Group E is wide open, the winner of England and South Africa tomorrow night should make the semis, whilst the loser will need to win their last game, on that side of things England is lucky to have the late game in their final match

Re: Super Eights

@eddiesmith the Australians today made a big point. They looked a professional side and a favorite if they keep performing as they did today. Warner is a machine and when on song is arguably one of the most difficult batsmen to bowl in the world in T20 cricket. The one reason why enjoy watching him bat is his straight bat shots which today went over the ropes. Nannes on a hard track with a hard new ball is going to be a very difficult prospect for most batsmen. I hate to say it but the Indian batsmen played like they did not know what to do and once again showed the whole world that they don't like fast bouncy wickets. The Australian fielding is the best I have seen in a while, that catch of Warner (nominee for catch of the tournament with Gibbs of McCullum last night being another candidate). The 3 phases look solid and it is going to take a near perfect game to defeat.

Also this story of England and left hand bowling.. really .. spare me. I agree with lpj86 that Smith struggles with left handed bowling(he is Chaminda Vaas favourite South African to bowl to :)) but this is just KP doing the media again. Did England not use Broad around the wicket as an angle in the Previous tournament?

The one thing that is quite is the clear difference between the IPL and the international T20 cricket; is that with the internationals have bowling line-ups have no weaknesses in them and every bowler is of international class and can hurt the opposition.

Tonight's field is quite ridiculously small though. Every time I see a ground like that I find the game a bit more difficult to take seriously.

Re: Super Eights

Well that was a game and a half on Australia's part last night. Hard to see anything done wrong and that team mustn't be changed.

How will the Aussie batsmen go against Malinga and who I call the best bowler currently - Mendis. Kapugedera also isn't too bad either as an understatement. The batting has been the most fragile part of the side and Sri Lanka is their next game.

Tonight - England vs South Africa and NZ vs Pakistan.
I'm calling England and New Zealand for the wins, and hey, I haven't predicted one wrong yet! :D

Who was a star of the IPL apart from KP? I can't remember another.

Re: Super Eights

Just a bloke who averaged 40 with the bat, 20 with the ball but wasnt noticed as he played in a team run by morons and with their Indian internationals being useless they didnt even make the finals despite having one of the best lists in the IPL

There was another English bloke who did quite well, then got ignored by his team, another who failed to make finals, but he cant even get a game for England now

Re: Super Eights

I still don't know who you are talking about, all though is one of them Bopara?

I followed Deccan for the second half and I'm not up with the other teams.
