It's a bit of personal choice but a good back lift will see the toe of the bat coming up to somewhere between the hip and the 'bottom' of the shoulder.
lol, my backlift barely gets above my knee level yet i can still hit the ball out the ground if I wanted, though probablly don't have anywhere the eye to do it
I'd really be interested in what the current high performance coaching thoughts are on grip and set up. I've overheard some talk that suggests that there have been some recent changes in preferred methods, especially bottom hand grips. Does anyone know?
its what ever works for you fella. if you look at the introduction of 20/20 and recent one day matched there has been alot of change and certain Methods and books re written due to shots and methods. what works well for one person may not work well for another!
I saw a guy at the weekend who had the most bizarre backlift. As the bowler was running in he gave the bat a little flourish :? As in lifted it, pointed it to mid-off for a second and then brought it around behind him before swinging down. I'm guessing this is more of a trigger movement than a backlift thing per se.
If i'm against a quick, i'll lower my bat lift, as reactions wise the bat is closer to the ball. For a spinner i generally have a high batlift, mainly because if he offers a bad ball, i'll punish him with a huge swing of the bat.
The issue with most peoples backlift isn't necessarily the bats maximal height, but when it gets to that point.
Ideally you would like bat to reach it's apex at the the point of delivery; from there you are in the most efficient place to either a) raise the bat further/ change the angle of the bat for a back foot shot, or b) complete the full swing for a front foot shot.
and even though most people know it, it's important to add that the backswing is primarily governed by the 'cocking' of the wrists...
I lift the bat to the same height (just above hip height) no matter the pace of the bowler. I have tried lowering it for quicker bowlers but i find that this makes the bat swing slower so either way i make contact with the ball but with the smaller backlift less power is generated.
