The Back-Lift???

Re: The Back-Lift???

It's a bit of personal choice but a good back lift will see the toe of the bat coming up to somewhere between the hip and the 'bottom' of the shoulder.

Re: The Back-Lift???

lol, my backlift barely gets above my knee level yet i can still hit the ball out the ground if I wanted, though probablly don't have anywhere the eye to do it

Re: The Back-Lift???

It's a personal thing. Most of the coaching info will show the bat handle level with the hip and the toe of the bat slightly higher.

Some people will have bat level, others pointing downwards. The main thing is that that bat comes down straight.

Re: The Back-Lift???

for me it depends on what bowler i'm facing etc. but i was always taught level with the hips bat pointing back straight over the stumps.......

Re: The Back-Lift???

I'd really be interested in what the current high performance coaching thoughts are on grip and set up. I've overheard some talk that suggests that there have been some recent changes in preferred methods, especially bottom hand grips. Does anyone know?

Re: The Back-Lift???

its what ever works for you fella. if you look at the introduction of 20/20 and recent one day matched there has been alot of change and certain Methods and books re written due to shots and methods. what works well for one person may not work well for another!

Re: The Back-Lift???

look at amia for SA, his backlift starts pointing to gully and very high! but he brings it back down straight!

Re: The Back-Lift???

I saw a guy at the weekend who had the most bizarre backlift. As the bowler was running in he gave the bat a little flourish :? As in lifted it, pointed it to mid-off for a second and then brought it around behind him before swinging down. I'm guessing this is more of a trigger movement than a backlift thing per se.

Re: The Back-Lift???

If i'm against a quick, i'll lower my bat lift, as reactions wise the bat is closer to the ball. For a spinner i generally have a high batlift, mainly because if he offers a bad ball, i'll punish him with a huge swing of the bat.

Re: The Back-Lift???

these days, coaches in oz reccommend high back lifts, eg peterson and ponting. its more in the wrists though with the cocking of the wrists

Re: The Back-Lift???

The issue with most peoples backlift isn't necessarily the bats maximal height, but when it gets to that point.

Ideally you would like bat to reach it's apex at the the point of delivery; from there you are in the most efficient place to either a) raise the bat further/ change the angle of the bat for a back foot shot, or b) complete the full swing for a front foot shot.

and even though most people know it, it's important to add that the backswing is primarily governed by the 'cocking' of the wrists...

Re: The Back-Lift???

Depends on the ball being bowled tbh.

If its super quick then I tend not to lift as high as I would against a medium or spin bowler.

Re: The Back-Lift???

I lift the bat to the same height (just above hip height) no matter the pace of the bowler. I have tried lowering it for quicker bowlers but i find that this makes the bat swing slower so either way i make contact with the ball but with the smaller backlift less power is generated.

Re: The Back-Lift???

Use the pace of the ball Jolldo, work the gaps.

Once the eye is in then you usually have that little bit more time to throw the kitchen sink at it.

If the ball is short, then its ********ing gone.

Re: The Back-Lift???

Geoff Boycott suggests that you lift the bat really high and towards the slips and then bring it down in a circular fashion.

I have seen this work well for a couple of youngsters. Not sure if it will work for everyone.

One thing though - your back-lift should never take the bat behind your body.
