I use the varnish and glue as I do occasionally play on wet pitches. The varnish and glue don't effect the pickup and I'll just apply them at the start of the season when it's especially wet.
If I was in a position where I never played on a wet pitch I'd probably not bother, but I'd rather spend a bit of time on the varnishing and gluing than wasting my willow investment.

I can see what your saying but i am of the school of thought where the wood has to breathe form somewhere, and if you oil the face and edges and lightly on the back the only place it can do so is the Toe.
sadly in this day and age Bats are not for life, if your a number 11 and rarely get to use it then fine, and belive me i love my willow to pieces but if it breaks or splits and cant be repaired its nothign but fire wood..... :cry

If I am correct in my thinking (and this after not having to sell/install/replace an artificial pitch for sometime) the material and brand used in Australia is different to the most common one used in the UK.
Also, they tend to be laid on a different base compared to usual method over here. This may have something to do with the amount of water they hold and when they are playable after rain/watering etc.
