Twenty20 World Cup Grand Final - Pakistan vs India at Johannesburg

Who could have asked for a batter Grand Final? Pakistan and India, the arch rivals, do battle to determine who will be the first ever Twenty20 World Cup champions.

Pakistan and India have been the real surprise packets of this tournament. Both teams have had little Twenty20 experience but have made it to the Grand Final beating out specialist sides such as England and South Africa and also overcoming the number one test and ODI nation Australia.

This shapes up to be a fantastic game though as the two arch rivals do battle with rather inexperienced sides. However, the younger players have performed quite well and have aided each side's progression to this final game.

Pakistan have been rather consistent and have played well thus far. Both the batters and bowlers have performed evenly with some excellent batting and some very good seam bowling.

India started off sluggishly but have fought back, lately through the sheer brilliance of Yuvraj Singh and they now find themselves in the final.

This will be a good game no doubt and one of the most anticpated games of the tournament, expect some fireworks here.

Pakistan XI (probable): Imran Nazir, Mohammad Hafeez, Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik*, Misbah-ul-Haq, Shahid Afridi, Fawad Alam, Kamran Akmal+, Umar Gul, Mohammad Asif, Sohail Tanvir

that is what we'll find out. i almost suspect they have.

i'm tipping Pakistan...reasonably easily

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Grand Final - Pakistan vs India at Johannesburg

What a game this has proved out to be. India started well with the bat but struggled in the middle of their innings with Gautam Gambhir who scored a brilliant 75 from 54 balls. The only other batsman to reach 30 was RP Sharma who scored exactly that. India rallied late thanks to Sharma as they compiled 5/157 from their 20 overs.

Umar Gul was Pakistan's most effective bowler with 3/28 from four overs.

The chase started badly for Pakistan as they lost Mohammad Hafeez in the first over. It hasn't got much better from there, Imran Nazir was on fire but was run-out for 33 from just 14 balls. Younis Khan scored 24.

Scorecard reads a sorry sight for Pakistan and they've slipped to 6/89. Irfan Pathan's previous over netted him two wickets including the important scalp of Shahid Afridi for a duck. It will be up to Misbah-ul-Haq and Yasir Arafat to try and score the runs now.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Grand Final - Pakistan vs India at Johannesburg

Arafat gone for 15 as he misses with a big swing and Pathan clean bowls him.

7/117, Misbah has replied with two big sixes. 41 needed off 19.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Grand Final - Pakistan vs India at Johannesburg

Wooo!!! Game on, another two sixes, this time, one each from Misbah and Sohail Tanvir who is the new batsman. That was Tanvir's first ball faced also.

7/129 and Pakistan right back in this, they need 29 off 17 balls.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Grand Final - Pakistan vs India at Johannesburg

Got him!!! A Sreesanth yorker gets rid of Tanvir for just 12 off four balls. Not a bad effort and got some boundaries the Pakistanis needed.

8/139 with two overs remaining. 20 needed off 12 balls.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Grand Final - Pakistan vs India at Johannesburg

End of the 2nd last over!!!

Pakistan managed to get three rund from the first four balls before RP Singh bowled Umar Gul with a leg-stump yorker. Mohammad Asif comes out though and hits a first ball four to make the score 9/145!!

More importantly though, Misbah-ul-Haq is on strike with 13 needed off the last over with Joginder Sharma to bowl.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Grand Final - Pakistan vs India at Johannesburg

What a finish!!!

First ball: A massive wide from Sharma, the ball barely landed on the pitch.

First ball (wide was bowled first up - 2nd): Play and miss outside off stump

Second ball (3rd): A big six from Misbah as he smashes a full toss stright down the ground for six crucial runs

Third ball (4th): Gone!!! Got him!!! Misbah tries to do a scoop shot only needing six off four balls but it goes staright into the air and Sreesanth takes another catch. Misbah gone for 43 and India have won by five runs in an absolute thriller.

What a fitting finish to what has been a pretty good tournament. Soem great hitting but the batters haven't had it all their own way with some good bowling also. India didn't bat too well bt they backed it up with some fantastic bowling and it has lead them to victory here but Pakistan gave them a big scare at the end though.

India are the inaugural winners of the 2007/2008 ICC World Twenty20!!

Man of the Match was Irfan Pathan for match-winning figures of 3/16.

WooooooooooooHooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WooooooooooooHooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WooooooooooooHooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Twenty20 is the future of international cricket!!!!!!!!!!

Viva Twenty20!!!!!!

INDIA!!!!!!! INDIA!!!!!!! INDIA!!!!!!! INDIA!!!!!!! INDIA!!!!!!!

Now, come on let's take Twenty20 and market it properly in more countries, like USA, China, Canada etc. Twenty20 cricket will spread the game of cricket to lot bigger part of the world. You could say Twenty20 is Americanized cricket, I say it is the best version of cricket to be able to market well and spread to places in the world where cricket isn't popular.

I'm so glad it happened to be India vs. Pakistan in the first ever Twenty20 World Cup final, was it a coincidence or what? Whatever it is, Twenty20 has added lot more excitement into cricket.

As I've been saying on this MB for years. I tell ya, it's downright
scary being right all the time.

You might have been saying various different things, a lot of them crap like without baseball players cricket won't make it. Some of the things you had been saying (like making cricket more faster paced, Americanized) may have had some merit. The problem is, the way you say it and use downright racist, mean words was enough to make most people mad. It displayed closed-mindedness. That, and the fact that you keep bringing American baseball into every discussion was insane.

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Grand Final - Pakistan vs India at Johannesburg

Well my prediction was totally up the creek. I must have had a few too many yesterday when making my predictions.

Fantastic game of cricket. He may not have quite got his team home - but Misbah-Ul-Haq knew what he was doing. I don't mind saying that he was man of the match. He didn't quite win it, but he basically changed the game.

Where has he been all these years? surely he would be a champion ODI player?

Re: Twenty20 World Cup Grand Final - Pakistan vs India at Johannesburg

************, thought that paddle shot was going for four for a second. Probably not a bad idea with fine leg up, just needed to get a bit more on it with the medium pace of the bowler.

Afridi, I wish at times he would at least take a couple of balls to get his eye in because boy, when he gets going.
