West Indies In Australia

That was a good way to start the series! The West Indies bat first on a swinging WACA pitch. They then get bowled out for 70 by the Australians. Mitchell Starc was on fire taking 5-20 off 6.5 overs, which is now his career best figures. James Faulkner was also impressive with the ball on debut, with figures of 2-14 off 5 overs. Michael Clarke moved Glenn Maxwell to the top of the batting order. Glenn Maxwell repaid him by smashing 51 not out off only 35 balls. Showing the potential the selectors saw in him. Aaron Finch was unlucky getting out edging the ball to the keeper making 10 runs. Usman Khawaja hit the winning run making 8 runs not out. The Australians chased down the runs easily, finishing up 1-71. The West Indies have some work to do ahead of the next game on Sunday at the same venue. Funny to think Australia were on the receiving end of something similar to this at hands of the Sri Lankans not that long ago.

It's the old cliche...cricket is a funny game.

Hoping the Windies can bounce back.

I wonder how many will turn up tomorrow in Perth, I'm guessing very few.

Who can blame them at the moment? What international cricket needs at the moment is an influx of new talent into the international game, not more law changes that don't work or canning ODI cricket. How about the ICC actually started doing their jobs and gave smaller nations like Ireland (if they won't grant Test status), Scotland, Afghanistan and the Netherlands ODI status and gave them mini series' of three ODI's and three T20's, playing teams like Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, West Indies, New Zealand and even India. I understand this couldn't happen immediately with the current schedules of these teams but it should be planned for as soon as possible.

Cause let's face it. Other than South Africa, England, Australia (at times) and India (at times). International cricket is at quite a poor level right now. All out for 49 or 70 is not going to draw the crowds...

Crowd doesn't look that bad all things considered.

WI going a lot better today although Bailey has led a recovery for Australia, boy he has had some luck out there though.

Some fine hitting from Bailey in the final over to get to 125 not out and Australia 266. No reason why the West Indies can't chase that though. You would be annoyed if you decided to go to the Friday game instead of today.

So the West Indies are bowled out 54 runs short with 12 overs left, duded by a ridiculous DRS decision and a couple of brain melts they made with the bat.

The West Indies to their credit were more competitive which is what you would expect. Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja both failed with the bat again. Michael Clarke and Phil Hughes got out when they were batting well. Matthew Wade and Glenn Maxwell both gave their wicket away pretty easily. George Bailey showed how much class he has with his 100 and hitting at the end of the innings. James Faulkner played a important role with the bat, staying out in the middle with him. George Bailey will have silenced some of his critics with that knock.

Mitchell Starc was on fire with the ball once again taking 5 wickets. Glenn Maxwell got hit for a few runs but bounced back by taking important wickets. Matthew Wade's keeping has really improved. He took a good catch and stumping. Australia's fielding has also been a lot better this series. George Bailey's run out is also worth mentioning.

Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja could both be dropped for the next match, most would say that is fair enough. They have some work to do with their batting.

The National Selection Panel has today announced a 13-player squad for games three and four of the CommBank series against the West Indies in Canberra and Sydney.

Clarke (Capt), Bailey, Cutting, Doherty, Faulkner, Finch, Hughes, Johnson, Maxwell, McKay, Starc, Wade, Watson

Usman Khawaja has been left out of the squad. Shane Watson has made his return to the Australian team. David Warner is not in the squad. He must still be trying to recover from a fractured thumb. Usman Khawaja is unlucky not to be in the squad. He did not get the amount of chances Aaron Finch has had in the team. Aaron Finch really needs to make a good score with the bat. It is nice to see that James Faulkner is still in the squad after his performances with both the bat and ball.

The National Selection Panel has finalised the departure of players on Australia's VB Tour of India.

February 7: Bird, Cowan, Henriques, Khawaja, Lyon, Pattinson, Siddle, Smith

February 9: Maxwell, Wade, Warner, (Ashton Agar, WA).

February 11: Clarke, Watson, Doherty, Starc, Hughes, Johnson.

Surprised by Aaron Finch's selection.. Plenty of opportunties wasted, give it to someone else. Adam Voges is one of the most in-form batsmen at the moment.

Or Shaun Marsh. Hopefully he gets a game in the last ODI after his 155* for WA on the weekend plus his great Big Bash.

Fingers crossed for his sake, minimal doubt he deserves a shot. Done all the hard work (again) just needs to make the performance at top level.

His most recent OD matches certainly re-displayed his class, especially the innings of 155* mentioned. Need more match-winners.

Australia looking at setting a 350+ total after Watson smashed a century, Hughes also starting to build an innings after a very slow start. Finch would be very disappointed not to go on past 38 on this pitch.

So Australia get 329.. Hughes with 86. Amazing catch from Pollard to get Maxwell on the boundary and some great finishing from Bailey at the end, some of his critics from a few weeks ago must be feeling a bit silly now.

If Australia bowl well they should be able to defend this total. Shane Watson played a outstanding innings in his return playing for Australia. He has also showed he can play as a specialist batsman for Australia. Phil Hughes also continued on with his good form after a slow start. George Bailey is taking on the challenge as being the finisher for Australia really well.

West Indies going pretty well in the run chase at 2 for 125. The run rate is creeping up but they do still have some big hitting left in the shed. Set up for a good finish.

Good win the by the Australians, taking out the series. The Australians won by 39 runs. The West Indies reached 290 before being bowled out. Some of their batsman made good scores but they needed other batsman to bat around them. Chris Gayle remains out of form. James Faulkner did the damage with the ball tonight taking 4-48. I changed my profile picture at the right time with David Warner injured. :p Good to see the Australian ODI team becoming more consistent.
