Young Up & Comers

Re: Young Up & Comers

''How many useful bowling options do they need?''

Well australia really have 5 genuine options- the four specialist plus Watson.Katish and Clarke are both very handy part timers so. So thats 7 options.Even HUSSEY can role his arm.Katish and Clarke make the side on their batting alone their part time stuff although seldom use would be a bonus.North isn't one of the best 6 batters in australia nor is he a QUALITY all rounder(i just see him as an average batter who bowls useful part time stuff). So he shouldn't be in the team.Your top 6 should always comprise of ur best 6 batters ( age taken into account as well) or your best 5 batters plus a quality all rounder( which Watson is).No use keeping talented batters like hughes, Khawaja on the out side to get another bowling option in ( when that bowling option- North, isnt consistent enough batting wise. This is not Odi cricket ,bowling options after your front line bowlers should be seen as bonus you shouldnt pick a guy cause he is a usefully part timer if he isn't a better batter than other batters outside the test team. You get this Hilditch.Thats the problem when one starts sacrificing quality for quantity.

Re: Young Up & Comers

Gooday Boris,

I would suggest that the standout is NSW quick Trent Copeland. Havent had the pleasure of seeing him live but from what I hear and looking at his grade/NSW performances I think he just might be the next big thing.
Funny that you mention Cameron Boyce. Saw him in a Futures League game at AB field against NSW in Febuary(2-76 and 0-49) and wasn't overly impressed at the time. Next thing he is in the Bulls playing Shield.
Just goes to show the folly of basing ones judgement on a single performance.

I've only looked at Copeland's figures, but not his actual bowling, but from what I see and hear as well he's one of the many young fast bowlers, as is always the case in Australia, that could make it big time. What I'd be looking for from him is patience and accuracy, that seems one thing lacking of late in all sides.

He hasn't really much in the way of good figures as of yet, but more watching him playing in the final of the Sheffield Shield last season convinced me a little of the hype surrounding him. Obviously I'm also judging him on one performance, but it seems there have been others to agree with my thoughts so it looks as if it wasn't a one off thing. He has a good technique, not too scared to give the ball some flight and has a few variations up his sleeve. There's a long way for him to go yet, but as far as spinning talent at the moment, I would be putting my money on him to become one of the next big things.

Nic Maddinson just played an excellent innings for NSW in SA in the latest Shield game.

NSW really has some good young talent at the moment. If a couple of the senior guys get called up to the Test squad this summer then we could see a few guys get opportunities.

I'm jealous of your team at the moment Caesar. Practically every youngster in the NSW team looks like 'the next big thing' and the older guys look like they should still be in the international sides.

Maddinson sure can bat though.
