Rat n bat there are reports a man fitting your description was seen carrying 20 pizzas in whites with a batting helmet (no grill) on down Hampton street?

Having seen Port vs Brighton, It would have been an interesting game if the overs were the same for both sides. The pitch was as flat as i've seen and Brighton had no incentive to set a target or score quickly. 172 overs for 380 odd shows great powers of concentration from the Brighton Batsmen, but was probably not what was intended when you look at playing an even grand final. From a neutral perspective it didn't make great watching, however I do commend what Brighton did on the Saturday in terms of powers of concentration and sticking to a plan etc... Having a look back over the results through the year Port played Parkdale twice and Brighton had an easier draw throughout the season also not helped by the fact that Chelsea declared deliberately so they could play port in a semi, which meant Brighton finished top. I definitely think the rules of the final have to be looked at. Quite simply if time is lost the overs should be split in half between the sides especially if you are having a 4 day grand final. Again congratulations to Brighton for winning and to Port for putting up such a spirated effort in a close to impossible chase.

Fantastic conditions down at South Caulfield for the grand final.
The partnership between Bacon and Tillakaratne was absolutely outstanding and ensured there was no way back for Port. It looked like these 2 were going to bat the whole day themselves! Superb effort.
As an observer it would have been great if both teams were able to bat roughly the same amount of overs. On such a great deck with 2 very good batting line ups this could have been a thriller.

Brighton finishing top and also winning the toss proved crucial in the end. Personally I'd like to see the grand final treated as every other game is during the year and have both sides having the same amount of overs to bat.

Well done to Brighton District on the great win.

In the last 3 years we have made a GF by beating the top placed team & been knocked out in a semi losing to 4th as the top team so have experienced both sides of thsi final 4 and I think the old VFL final 4 (1 v 2(with double chance), 3 v 4) is a superior system to 1 v 4 2 v 3 for 2 major reasons.

1. A greater reward for finishing top, which reflects performance over the whole season
2. Finals reflect the home and away season rather than being a game totally different to the 1 played all year 160 over v 80.

I also love the rematch aspect of the top 2 meeting twice in 3 games but others find this repetitive...

Didn't hurt in the end as your players were outstanding on and off the field, with no whinging about anything and the covers were no issue at all. You have a great bloke as skipper thats for sure.
My only thing i would have a go at, was the supporters who chose to go in and start eating the players and umps afternoon tea, poor form and wouldn't happen with our big fella at South.

Ahhh, southern sledge. long time reader first time writer, love your work. So just to clarify, you saw something you didn't like, said & did nothing, and saved it up to whinge about on a little chat forum. Nice one. How do you pronounce passive agressive?

The Chelsea declaration did not change the ladder positions at all. Parkdale had already beaten Port and we finished 11 points clear on top anyway. Both Port and us won 9 games, and we had two genuine outrights in that, so hard to argue we didn't deserve to finish on top.

As for the batting, show me two better innings under pressure. The best partnership I've seen.

No need to get defensive. This is just my opinion... Looking at better ways to improve the comp! As I said you cannot fault Brighton, my comments are about the rules of the comp.
Fair comment about the results not effecting the ladder, as it happened Port played Parkdale twice and Brighton played Chelsea twice, that is a fairly even split. However my point is, you are better off everyone playing each other once and that means there is no room for a team in the top 4 playing a weaker side twice.

I do like the current situation, but then I have never known anything different. I wouldn’t be adverse to throwing a prelim final into the mix

And given your moniker, I am sure you would be interested to know that at my quick glance there were about 7 or 8 grades where teams either had their positions within the four affected, missed out on finals or were relegated despite winning more games than teams above them. Object of games must be to win, not score more runs in 2nd innings slogfests. If you are going to have bonus points make it the factor that splits teams when their match points are equal – not the primary factor

Can anybody hear SS stirring??

For sure, agree on the draw. Not sure what they'll do about it next season - maybe only enough clubs for 8 in each of south and south A anyway - makes it easier to do a fair draw.

As for ways to improve the comp...comfortably in the top three teams for the season was Parkdale - won more games than both Chelsea and Beena and beat both us and Port.

But the clubs already had their chance to vote on that issue...

...

From someone who has had a couple of experiences with the 8 team comps – it works really well. Everybody plays everybody in a two day and one day game. This year they got the programming right as well – two years ago it was the two day games first, and they were all washed out, or turned into a one day game anyway. This year – brilliant. And yep, unfortunately we are already hearing rumours about more clubs jumping ship – it could be that both South and South A will be 8 team comps, which is not ideal for the future of cricket this side of the Yarra, but does make it fairer for everybody, in my opinion

Rat u summed up the problem with bonus points perfectly. I'm glad someone else other than me & xyvwu checks the impact of bonus points on VTCA ladders.. I saw 4 grades whre relegation or finals were decided by bonus points where teams that won more games finished lower. Nowhere was that better shown than in the south where the last spot came down to Beena (well Lamb) slogging soft 2nd innings runs while Parky gave up 30 overs of 'junk cricket' & missed the finals by 1 point. We have a massive amount of respect for Parkdale & they were a real chance to win a flag but due to not playing junk cricket they missed out. The players deserve better than these rules. Cricket should b played to a result not to overs

after reading about this wonderful comp having bonus points in 20/20 cricket it shows how far from understanding this issue they are. 8 team comps with match & bonus points separated & the VTCA may start to save itself, otherwise this is dying comp.

Can any1 from Port confirm that they r on the way to subbies ASAP, maybe this season?

Whose dropping out of subbies from West or South for Port to come in?

Melton maybe off to Premier would leave a spot. Think you will find a few clubs will be in dire straights when or if the CV grants are stopped to Subbies.

Interesting about Port if that's correct?

Interesting indeed. What other teams would be in line? Port would be ahead after being in subbies before..

I reckon the clubs moving out of subbies to go down, rather than up would be more likely. Cutting of the CV grants would be not a moment too soon – but they still wield some power at CV House

I doubt they would add any clubs to Premier – if Melton come in, I reckon it would be as a merger with an existing team, rather than a new entry. Happy to be proven wrong though

Hey mate I heard as well that Melton are off to premier and port have been desperate to go back to Subbies for years and you wouldn't think any other club would want to so it only seems natural... Be interesting to see what happens also heard another south team is looking at moving to the DDCA as early as next year... Clubs are getting sick of the vtca hierarchy

Thanks for your kind remarks,. It was not up to me to tell them, but it wouldn't happen at my club. Hope to see more of your quality posts

The rumour of Old Mentonians going was a joke by the Pres to someone and it was all the talk on the weekend before The Secretary put paid to that rumour.
The Comp needs more people from the South to put their hands up and help, otherwise the South will die. Personally i believe it should be spilt and a playoff at the end of the year.

Ok - a little research says they want 20 teams by 2015. Melton is one, as well as the Werribee/Wyndham vale growth corridor
