Bowling attack

Re: Bowling attack

B.lee
S.Tait
S.Clark
S.Macgill/B.Hogg - cant decied
Hilfanhaus and johnson must prove them selves a little more.
And if any of them slack off we have direct replacments

Re: Bowling attack

Lee
Johnson
Clark
MacGill

I would say they'd go with those four. Lee and Clark to lead the attack and then Johnson to be the first change quick bowler. Johnson was in some terrific form over in India for the one-day series and I think the selectors will reward him for those efforts. Tait is thereabouts but still needs more match practice, especially in the four day games. So far, he's played one Ford Ranger Cup game and while he did well, it's just not enough match time.

I would be very surprised if the selectors didn't pick Stuart MacGill. He's always been there when Warne was around so I believe it is his turn now. I am a WA boy though and I wouldn't mind seeing Brad Hogg get a game, he's bowled brilliantly in the game against Victoria so far and his series in India was also quite impressive, plus he has shown he can bat with a quickfire 58 not out off 42 balls today. If Hogg keeps taking wickets, MacGill may face some competition for the spinners spot.

That's my line-up but there may be a few surprises in store.

Hogg does not have what's required to bowl in Tests, one day specialist only.

Hogg had match figures of 8/83 against Victoria and a quickfire 58 in the second innings. He has what it takes in my opinion. On the other hand, MacGill has figures of 4/244 from 47.3 overs (currently) which is hardly impressive. He's also been absolutely carted in the game against Queensland.

Hogg also had a brilliant one-day series in India and also a good World Cup campaign. I believe he is in with a shot at playing. He is the form spinner in Australia at the moment, plus he can bat a bit too.

Re: Bowling attack

Lee
Clark
Noffke
Hogg

Lee picks himself as does Stuart Clark. Noffke is back to his best when he was close to selection before injury, then form, set him back. Not only is he taking wickets on flat pitches (he got 6 while Lee and Johnson got none between them) he is making big runs too (100,50,78 last 3 innings). Pick the man in form. No way do I want Tait and Lee in the same team. Plenty of pace but no great consistent pressure so one will do. Be boundaries waiting to happen. I only pick Hogg because of the doubts about MacGill's fitness otherwise I'd be selecting MacGill.

If not Noffke, I would go, in order of preference, Hilfenhaus, Johnston then Tait.

OK, I have changed my mind, he deserves a chance.

His team attitude/enthusiasm is excellent and his performance in the field are big positives over MacGill.

Plus, as you say he can handle a bat.

cullen bailey can't even get a game for S.A. not to mention that the indians would rip him and dan cullen to pieces. against India is must be Hogg who plays as no one can pick him.

Re: Bowling attack

MacGill should be dropped, but unfortunately there is not much to replace him with.

Hopefully it was injury impeding him in Tassie and he will improve.

Re: Bowling attack

i agree that we shouldnt throw one of these young spinners into the deep end however if we were up three nill surely we should give one of these young spinners a chance in a dead rubber???

Re: Bowling attack

yes thats what i meant, but the selectors just arent gonna give them a go and eventually we're jus gonna have to keep replacing old blokes with young blokes

Re: Bowling attack

The two posts above will come into play more than anything now. MacGill needs surgery to fix his troublesome knee and that would see him miss all four tests of the upcoming series against India should he decide to have the procedure done.

MacGill may opt for surgery

MacGill wasn't selected for the upcoming Pura Cup game for New South Wales against Victoria which starts on Friday.

If MacGill is to sit out, then this raises an interesting selection period. The logical choice would be Brad Hogg who was in the 13-man squad for the Brisbane test. But, Hogg's bowling of late hasn't been great and he has struggled in the last couple of games he has played in (Pura Cup and Ford Ranger Cup against South Australia). However, his early season form was good and his batting has also been a standout, something which would add more strength to the Australian batting line-up.

Other than Hogg, there is really no-one else to take on the spinners role. Kerry O'Keeffe has been saying Victorian spinner, Bryce McGain should be in the side but McGain is 35 and it wouldn't really solve Australia's spinner's problem.

Australia's younger prospect, Dan Cullen, has been terrible this year for South Australia and looks nothing like the player he was last season. Cullen Bailey, the other South Australian, has also been rather ordinary and is having trouble gaining a spot in the Redbacks first eleven.

Let's have a look at some of the candidates and other spinners from all the states.

New South Wales

Beau Casson
Nathan Hauritz

Queensland

Ryan Broad
Daniel Doran

South Australia

Cullen Bailey
Dan Cullen

Tasmania

Xavier Doherty
Jason Krejza

Victoria

Bryce McGain

Western Australia

Aaron Heal
Brad Hogg

So, who do you guys think should be the spinner if MacGill doesn't play? And who will have the spinners role in the future?
