Fast bowling fitness

The potential for injury is there, as it is in all sports but weight lifting is slightly different in that it is far easier to fall into bad habits than other sports. It may be all great and good advising a 13 year old to go and bulk up with free weights but unless they are supervised by someone who knows what they are doing, it's very easy for damage to be done.

As posted above the key is a good coach but how many are there around that can be trusted? Personally, I don't want to be sued in 2/5/10 years time or whatever because some kid is injured and is blaming advice found on this site. Hence we err on the side of caution.

If someone is determined to do weights then we'll see what we can do to point them in the right direction and with a knowledgeable coach, face to face, which in my opinion is the best way when it comes to learning weight techniques.

Weight lifting and falling into bad habits? Nothing like having a good coach but that does not necessarily stop you from learning . Bulk up with free weights? The objective is functional strength for sport, not bulking up. A 13 year old cannot bulk up much anyway. You are assuming that I am asking kids to lift weights to the exclusion of conditioning work. Maybe you should refer to the work Derek Hansen and Kelly Baggett on this subject. Obviously you do not have the experience and I can understand you feel this way because of the lack of experience. But let it not be a case of not wanting to learn as this is not nuclear science. So what you are saying is that strength coaches are getting sued for advice they give on the internet? This is highly improbable. If the kid gets injured doing some of the things you advice other than weights then thats okay I guess? Look, there are many roads to 'Rome', but as coaches, we need to find the most efficient way to get there. And Rippetoe is one of the best coaches to teach the correct technique big lifts to novices. That is why I mentioned his books.

Are you a coach yourself, newbie?

Jonsey, yes long enough to understand the long term development of a player. And I have found that cricket coaches ( even internationals) are among the most close minded when it come to strength and conditioning. And the aerobics community combined with their so called exercise programs involving 100s of body building/ shaping type training do not help either. And then there is the 'functional training' crowd with swiss balls and bosus. Its all okay to look good and be in 'shape' but for a sportsman it is a waste of time. It is also a money making racket with no value delivered. In reality they are taking supplementary exercises and making these exercises central to a program.

Listen to guys like Rippetoe who have over 30 years of experience. Concentrate on the big lifts, ( the best way to get functional strength), No isolation work required ( even for your core - training core stability with body weight stuff is not required if you have good lifting program) work on your conditioning outdoors, eat clean and play your sport with passion, thats all.

'Time' is a limited resource, spend it efficiently. There is no time for a serious cricketer to do so many exercises as the modern health pros have you do. I train boys to bar bell squat more than their own body weight and they are strong enough for any sport. The quality of muscle developed and the rate of force production will be far greater when the big lifts are trained. You are just 14, get started and you will be ahead of many by the time you are 20.

This is good general advice.

Although 1 thing I would temper it with is this: keep your mind open. The 'big lifts' are not the only answer.

For every answer there are just more questions:

Re: Fast bowling fitness

new to the forums....i'm just wondering what you all think of chin ups (palms facing towards you) as a way of strengthening the back. i know that pull ups (palms facing away from you) are better for the back, but i can't do any yet.

right now, i'm doing as many chin ups as i can (at most 3-4) with negatives (slowly lowering myself from the top of the bar) to fill a set of 8.

Re: Fast bowling fitness

I can't do chin ups without a slight brisk walk toward the bar, after which I can do about 3 - is the walk up okay or should I really try to do it from a static position. After I do some chin ups, I usually get some burning in the latissmus dorsi for about a week or two whenever I do some boxing or even brush my teeth - again, is this okay?

Re: Fast bowling fitness

work towards doing them from a static position. it will take some time, as they are really hard to do. i used to jump to get myself to the top and then lower myself til my elbows were about 70-75% fully extended.

now i can start from a complete hang, where my elbows are fully extended and pull myself up and lower all the way down for a few reps. Eventually, I will change my grip so that my hands face away from me, but it is going to take some time.

Just keep working hard, and be sure to try to do a full range of motion - that will be the most beneficial to you.
