Of course it did. I was going to compare it to carlton playing without Judd and Fevola...but theyd probably still be pretty competitive. South wasnt anywhere near as competitive as they would have liked to have been that day. Guess that will happen when ur best 2 players are out.
But we saw when just Ando was out, what a difference that made, all of a sudden we werent bolwing teams out. Take out Hornet from that and it makes it worse again.

Re: GCA & BPCA match previews and reviews

The Highton boys were over training on the SBCC practice nets last night and from all accounts they had an inspirational speech from the Hornet. The Heat might be on a bit of a high for this weeks game, they could get the karma of the Swans rubbing off on them ??

Re: GCA & BPCA match previews and reviews

I don't know why this hasn't gone on the BPCA web page, but here are my previews for this weekends semi finals:

BPCA Semi Finals Previews

With Tim Michell

So the top four has become the final four, with BPCA reaching its penultimate stage for the 2008-09 season this weekend. Barwon Heads take on Portarlington in what promises to be an enthralling battle, while Collendina host St Albans this weekend in the other semi final.

Barwon Heads vs Portarlington

Having come close to a slip up against Jan Juc in the first weekend of finals, Barwon Heads will have the opportunity to build towards a near perfect season when they take on Portarlington. The Seagulls have dropped only one game to this stage of the season, although they face an opponent that plays traditionally well at R.T Fuller Reserve.

Paul McGrath has scored two hundreds in his last two innings at the ground, with the Demons totalling close to 250 in both their innings at Barwon Heads over the last two seasons. Managing to derail a deep Seagulls batting line up will be vital for the Demons, meaning the onus will be on Paul McGrath and Liam Jackson to claim early wickets for the visitors.

With last years opener Ande Santilli batting as low as 10 in the Seagulls line up, taking early wickets should provide a spark for the Demons. If they cannot manage this though, it will be difficult to see Portarlington pegging back the Seagulls batting line up.

While the game is likely to be close, it will be deemed an upset if the Demons progress this weekend.

Collendina vs St Albans/Breakwater

St Albans coach Jason Murray has laid down the gauntlet to Collendina, declaring his side’s bowling attack will be suited to the Collendina pitch this weekend.

While many sides fear the slightly bouncier surface at Collendina, Murray believes his side can utilise the pitch in a similar way to Cobras bowlers Michael Fabris and Brendan Long, who have had plenty of success at home this season.

The other thing working in the Saints favour is they played on the ground only a few weeks ago in the 20-20 final, coming close to an upset that evening. That result was also without Murray, who is likely to be fit for this weekend’s semi final encounter.

While things appear positive for St Albans, Collendina have played some scintillating cricket throughout the season, culminating in their rise to being a genuine premiership contender. Having been eliminated at this stage last season, Kade Norquay will have his side ready for a tightly fought contest.

NORTH GEELONG v BELL POST HILL

On Saturday, North Geelong made there way up to Windy Hill to take on Bell Post Hill in a repeat of the match that was heated off last year. Bell Post Hill took in a very different line up to the one that finished 8th last year, with the additions of Cairns, Anderson, Hassett, Bell and Forster. North Geelong’s newest player Marco Sticca and the returning Mitchell Troy were both welcome additions to the top order.

North Geelong won the toss and elected to bat in windy conditions on a pitch that looked like anything could happen, and an outfield that Flemington would be proud of. Disaster struck for the Magpies early losing Troy in the third over to a bouncer from Faulkhead. 30 runs later and Hall, Millard and Armistead were all back in the pavilion, and Bell Post Hill were in the box seat with North struggling at 4-37. Veteran Alf Clark joined new boy Marco Sticca, and the two set about restoring some order in the North Geelong innings. The two put on 50 in tough conditions, before Clark missed a straight one and was bowled by Cairns for 24. Lymer hung around with Sticca for a few overs before he edged a ball and was caught by Anderson’s armpit behind the stumps. McGlinchey also hung around for a small amount of time, but he also departed and happened to be the first wicket of a hat-trick achieved by Bell, which also included the wickets of Jacimovic and Scown for golden ducks. Kingwell stuck it out with Sticca until time was called with North Geelong sitting on 9-139 from 48 overs. Sticca remained unbeaten on 57, whilst Bell took 3-21, and Faulkhead, Cairns and Forster all took two wickets apiece.

North Geelong had the worst possible start to their defence of a mediocre 139 with 10 runs coming off the first over by Scown, with Bush taking advantage of some short and wide deliveries. The demolition didn’t last long as Bush was dismissed two overs later, unable to get out of the way of a short one and knocking it back onto his stumps. Farrington came and never really looked comfortable against either Scown or Kingwell and soon missed a Scown yorker leaving Bell Post Hill at 2-18. Cairns joined Sells and they looked to build a partnership before Sells skied Armistead to Kingwell. Cairns got bowled by Armistead in his next over, which really put North Geelong in the box seat with Bell Post Hill struggling at 4-40. Anderson and Hassett however had other ideas, and scratched around for over after over and run after run until the score reached 101 and the overs were starting to run out. Hassett, trying to lift the run rate, skied a ball from Lymer to Clark, leaving a glimmer of hope for the Magpies. Faulkhead came to the crease, but soon skied another off Scown and was caught bringing Ty Watts to the crease. Anderson shielded the strike only to lose Watts with 16 runs still needed and 2 overs remaining. Scown bowled the second last over, and was hit for a six and a boundary off the first two balls to make the equation 6 off 10 balls. With two runs required for victory off 4 balls, Foord was run out going for a second, but the scores were tied and two balls later, Anderson knocked the winning runs through the onside field completing a great innings of 60 not out. Scown finished with 3 wickets for the Magpies whilst youngsters McGlinchey and Kingwell both bowled well in their combined 16 overs.

Votes: 3- Simon Anderson. 2- Marco Sticca. 1- Scott Bell

Re: GCA & BPCA match previews and reviews

Couldn;t help but notice the absence of one Babies Arm in the South Barwon line up for Saturday's game. Note: I looked at the South website to see this, as for some reason there were no sides in the paper for the second week running

Re: GCA & BPCA match previews and reviews

I see the inverleigh recruit of the century P.Heart took a 7 for against the flag favourites St Albans, pity P.Heart couldnt lift his side to victory with the bat, probably though he'd done his bit and had a rest.:D

Re: GCA & BPCA match previews and reviews

You presumably won't read about it in tomorrow's Advertiser, but Murghe defeated Waurn Ponds by 1 wicket off the last ball of the day at Deakin today (Sunday). Waurn Ponds made 183 (all out in last over) - Shane Skene 59 (batted well; it was actually surprising to see him get out). Murghe struggling at 6-74 on a deck starting to keep low, as this was the fourth game on it over the last two weekends. 67 for 7th wicket between Nathan Bisset and Troy Hardy. Simon Lees came in at 9/168 - 16 needed off 22 balls. 9 needed off the last over - 1,1,1, leg bye, 2 (should've been caught), then 4 by Danny Watson off the last ball to win at 6.45pm. Great finish!

Re: GCA & BPCA match previews and reviews

ROUND 2-NORTH GEELONG vs SOUTH BARWON
North Geelong played South Barwon at Osbourne Park in the match of the round in GCA Division 1. New recruit Tim Ferguson played his first game for the Magpies, whilst the Swans playing their first game of the year unearthed new recruits Clinton and Kelvin Ford, Geoff Young and Damien Koliba.

South Barwon won the toss and elected to bat on what looked like a good deck for batting. Geoff Young and Stephen Whittingham opened up for South, and settled fairly quickly against the opening bowling combination of Brad Scown and Tim Ferguson. Soon after, Scown was able make the break through, dismissing Young and just 7 runs later, Kingwell was able to find the edge of Whittingham’s bat, and a good catch was taken by Millard in the slips. A big partnership was inevitable, and Brad Hauenstein and Damien Koliba were the ones to answer the call. The two played and missed at some stages but had a good handle on the bowling, and saw that the scoreboard was continuing to tick over. The tide turned once again when Armistead came back on to bowl his second spell, dismissing both batsman in the space of 2 overs. This brought two new batsmen to the crease for the final ten overs, Damien Hester and Anthony Ford, and both batted well to take score up to 165 before Hester was caught in front of his stumps by Scown. Kelvin Ford came in and joined the other Ford for the final dash, and they worked hard to get the score up to 5-186 at the end of 49 overs. Anthony Ford ended up on 42 not out, whilst Brad Hauenstein equal top scored with 42. Brad Scown and Anthony Armistead ended up with 2 wickets apiece.

The North Geelong chase started in the worst possible way, with the Magpies losing Sam Hall from the second ball of the innings to the bowling of Clinton Ford. Millard joined Troy at the crease, and looked to dominate from the outset, smashing loose balls through the offside field, including a couple of sixes for good measure. After giving one life, he chanced his arm one time to many and skied a ball to keeper Brewer off Ross for 28. Sticca couldn’t repeat his heroics from the week before and was bowled for 2 by Ford leaving the Magpies reelling slightly at 3-45. Armistead joined Troy and despite not scoring for a few overs, the two hung in and began to accumulate and get the scoreboard ticking over. With the score on 101, Armistead lobbed one to Ford off Darren Hauensteein, effectively costing him a pot or two, to bring Clark to the crease with the match very match in the balance with 86 runs required from 15 overs. Clark was made for the situation and with him at the crease, it all of a sudden made things look a whole lot easier. The two batsmen continued getting 5 or 6 off every over, and with North only needing 14 runs for victory Alf missed a straight one from Kelvin Ford bringing new man Tim Ferguson to the crease with Troy. The result though was inevitable, and Mitchell Troy concluded a magnificent innings of 79 not out by hitting the winning runs with an over to spare. Clinton Ford was the best of the South Barwon bowlers with 2-24.

Votes: 3- Mitchell Troy, 2- Brad Hauenstein, 3- Alf Clark
