Harbhajan Singh banned for three matches

Harbhajan Singh has been banned for three matches following his racial taunt towards Andrew Symonds during the second test. It is believed that the incident occured on Saturday in which an argument between Harbhajan and Symonds resulted in Harbhajan calling Symonds a "monkey".

Mike Procter, the match referee ruled that Harbhajan had breached Level 3 of the ICC's Code of Conduct and was subsequently given a three match ban.

Harbhajan's ban means he will miss the rest of the test series. However, should India choose to appeal the decision, Harbhajan will be free to play until the appeals hearing is held.

So, what are everyone's thoughts? Personally, I think the right decision was made. The BCCI stated during the India-Australian one-day series that racial taunts by crowd members wouldn't be tolerated and that any crowd members making any references to "monkeys" would be ejected. This should have also been aimed towards the Indian players also as we all know they are idolized in their home country and they should be setting an example for others to follow.

Pretty poor form from Harbhajan here, a totally unacceptable action on the field, there is no need for any player to racially abuse another on the field even if they were being baited by the Australian players.

I would have never thought that being called a monkey was a racist term, just very derogatory. However if Symmo had objected to it being racist and they agreed then Singh deserves the penalty.

Yes symmo was called a monkey by singh as in reference to Symmo's skin colour which is brown. So it is a racist remark. Symmo takes offence to being called that and the person who said it gets banned.

I believe that Monkey is a term that is branded on african-american people years back as white people thought they were less developed and more closely related to apes. So yes highly racist and deserved what he got.

Loving the BCCI and their threats to do this and do that. Funny thing is that they will propably carry out them if the ICC don't buckle to their pressure as they have the money

Re: Harbhajan Singh banned for three matches

Harbhajan Singh's three match ban has been lifted due to the racism charge not being able to be proven. Harbhajan was then charged with a level 2.8 offence - abuse and insult not amounting to racism to which Harbhajan pleaded guilty and therefore loses 50% of his match fee in fines.

Had Harbhajan been banned, the Board of Control for Cricket in India would have flown home, therefore boycotting the series.

Harbhajan is now free to play any further tests and India will proceed with the Commonwealth Bank Series.

What a joke. |@

Does the ICC stand for "Indian Cricket Council"? Soft effort from the ICC, once again bowing to the pressure from India, we really know who runs the sport on this planet now. It is pathetic that one person can get away with blatant racism and after the events that happened with Symonds in India, it is very disappointing that the Indian players would resort to such sledging tactics and still be able to get away with it.

Absolutely disgraceful.
