IPL Game 8 - Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai

Game 8 of the IPL sees the Chennai Super Kings take on the Mumbai Indians at the Kings home ground, MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Chennai scored a massive 240 runs in their first game, Michael Hussey went ballistic with a huge innings of 116 not out from only 54 balls. He was well supported with cameos from Raina and Badrinath who added to the damage in the huge score against the Kings XI Punjab. Their bowling though was average but still good enough to secure a comfortable victory, star bowler Muttiah Muralitharan was amongst the wickets and kept the runs to a manageable level.

Mumbai fared differently though, losing to the Bangalore Royal Challengers. Robin Uthappa fared well with the bat scoring a brisk 48, Shaun Pollock and Sanath Jayasuriya also chipped in with 29 and 28 respectively. As well as losing, Mumbai suffered the loss of Australian domestic all-rounder Dominic Thornely, who has was hit in the eye whilst batting. He required 15 stitches in his eye after copping a nasty blow from Zaheer Khan.

Their score wasn't enough though and despite two wickets from Harbhajan Singh (filling in as captain for the still injured Sachin Tendulkar, who won't be playing in this game either) and some economical bowling from Shaun Pollock, the Royal Challengers passed their score with only two balls remaining.

Another similar game to last night, one team hoping to get back on an even keel while the other is hoping to set the early pace along with the other undefeated sides. Expect a good match here with both batting line-ups to play a key part.

Mumbai XI (probable): 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 +Luke Ronchi, 3 Robin Uthappa, 4 Dwayne Bravo, 5 Saurabh Tiwary, 6 Abhishek Nayar, 7 Shaun Pollock, 8 *Harbhajan Singh, 9 Musavir Khote, 10 Ashish Nehra, 11 Dhaval Kulkarni

Chennai XI (probable): 1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Parthiv Patel, 3 Michael Hussey, 4 *+Mahendra Singh Dhoni, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Jacob Oram, 7 S Badrinath, 8 Joginder Sharma, 9 P Amarnath, 10 Manpreet Gony, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan

Umpires: Daryl Harper and GA Pratapkumar
3rd Umpire: Billy Bowden

Game starts at 10:30pm AWST (8pm local time, 2:30pm GMT).

Mumbai won the toss and decided to bowl first. Chennai have had a super fast start, 1/34 after 3.1 overs. Matt Hayden has 15 not out off just eight balls and already has 2 fours and 1 six.

Parthiv Patel was just dismissed by Ashish Nehra, edging behind for 14.

Hussey out cheaply!! He charges Kulkarni but misjudges it and gets a bottom edge onto off stump.

2/41 from 4.4 overs.

Teams are listed as above except for one change, YS Yeligati in for Saurabh Tiwary.

Khote strikes!! Raina smashes the final ball of the over down the ground but only finds Dwayne Bravo at long-on. Raina is out for 53.

3/143 after 15 overs, the captain MS Dhoni walks into bat.

Hayden is run out by Harbhajan after Dhoni smashes one to midwicket but Hayden is too slow and is well out of his crease after a direct hit.

One over to go and Chennai are 4/194.

The Super Kings make it to 5/208. Dhoni fell on the second last ball but they were already past 200 by then.

Hayden top scored with 81, Raina 53 and Dhoni smashed a quick 30. Khote was the most effective bowler with two wickets and was the 8th bowler in total used by the Mumbai Indians. Surprisingly, Harbhajan only bowled two overs, a confusing move.

So, 209 needed. This will be a good chase.

Mumbai have lost an early wicket. Luke Ronchi backs up too far and is run out via direct hit by Badrinath.

1/13 in the 2nd over.

By the way, Mumbai were 31 mins overtiem bowling their overs and still no penalty. Hmmm...

Gony picks up Jayasuriya! Sanath tries to smash down the ground but he top-edges and Joginder Sharma takes an easy catch.

2/31 after four overs. Required run rate is over 11 runs per over now.

Stayed up to watch Ronchi have a bat, not happy.

Played the rest this morning, not a bad effort from Mumbai to almost snatch victory.

They got closer than I thought they would. Ronchi getting run out early was disappointing.

Mumbai reached 7/202, falling short by six runs. At 4/97 in the 12th over, they looked gone but some explosive hitting from Abhishek Nayar (45* from 20 balls) and Harbhajan Singh (28 from 14 balls) got them very close but not close enough for victory. Earlier, Robin Uthappa scored 43 from 36 deliveries.

Gony was the matchwinner for the Super Kings, his 1/18 from four overs with one maiden certainly helped win them the game with Joginder Sharma's two wickets also coming in handy. They stood tall whereas Muralitharan (2/40 off four overs), Amarnath (1/57 off four) and Oram (0/53 off four) were hammered to all parts of the ground.

A close win to the Kings and they are now on two wins along with the Kolkate Knight Riders and the Delhi Daredevils. Each team has now played two matches.
