Chennai: MS Dhoni ($1.5 million), Muttiah Muralitharan ($600,000), Matthew Hayden ($375,000), Jacob Oram ($675,000), Stephen Fleming ($350,000)

So Dhoni has become the most expensive player in the league. He was bought by Chennai for $1.5 million, while the world's greatest wicketkeeper batsman Adam Gilchrist went for less than half that amount. The teams are only allowed to spend $5 million so it looks likely that MS Dhoni will stay as the highest paid player.

As an 'icon' player Tendulkar stands to earn $1.1 million, which is 15% more than Mumbai's bid for Sanath Jayasuriya ($975,000). 'Icons', Yuvraj Singh and Rahul Dravid will also earn more than a million US dollars. Since Kolkata's most expensive player was bought for $800,000, Sourav Ganguly will have to settle for a little less than a million.

Arguably three of the greatest spinners in the world Shane Warne, Anil Kumble and Mutiah Muralitharan were bought for relatively low bids of $450,000, $500,000 and $600,000. While spinners Harbhajan Singh and Daniel Vettori attracted higher bids of $850,000 and $650,000.

There were fears that Symonds popularity in India might have taken a hit after the Sydney fiasco, but Hyderabad certainly thinks otherwise, they bought him for $1.35 million. Team mates Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden failed to attract as much money. They went to Kolkata and Chennai for $400,000 and $375,000 respectively.

Surprisingly, Glenn Mcgrath, Mohammad Yousuf and Mike Hussey have attracted no bids so far.

Re: IPL Player Auctions

Chennai must be crazy. Dhoni is not worth $1.5 million. I just cant imagine that there would be so much competetion to grab Dhoni that Chennai had to pay $1.5 million for him. He is not the best player in the league, neither the most popular that its worth spending so much on him. Mumbai seems to have paid an unresonable amount for Harbhajan too. Murali or Warne would have been much more valuable.

Re: IPL Player Auctions

From a South African point of view, Graeme Smith has gone to Jaipur for $475 000, which I think is a good price compared to the other numbers. He has a really good Twenty20 record. Kallis has gone to Bangalore for $900 000 which is a bit more than I would've thought as he doesn't have a particularly good record in Twenty20. He has however looked a different player this season in terms of dominating bowlers in the shorter version of the game. Boucher's gone to Bangalore as well for $450 000 which I think is fair and Gibbs has gone to Hyderabad for $575 000. I think those 2 are good purchases. AB De Villiers has gone for $300 000 to Delhi.

Re: IPL Player Auctions

Yeah, both the teams have picked up some good players until now. I can't believe that Ponting is the lowest earning foreign player of the Kolkata team until now. The fear that he will be unavailable if the tour to Pakistan goes ahead must have something to do with it. But it was certainly a smart decision by Kolkata to pick Ponting.
I think performance wise Harbhajan might not be the spinner but he is surely a bigger brand in India than his fellow spinners so that might have been the reason why he was picked up for such an high amount.

Re: IPL Player Auctions

Mumbai got Pollock relatively cheaply. Same for Yousuf and Zaheer Khan. I think Ponting & Hayden are bargains depending on how many matches they're available for.

Re: IPL Player Auctions

Morkel is a good buy for Chennai. Yuvraj's price just went up a bit more after the purchase of Irfan Pathan

Re: IPL Player Auctions

Its surprising that players like Pollock, Warne and Gilchrist were sold relatively cheaply. As they have retired recently they will be available to play in all of the matches.

Mumbai: Sachin Tendulkar (icon), Sanath Jayasuriya ($975,000), Harbhajan Singh ($850,000), Shaun Pollock ($550,000), Robin Uthappa ($800,000)

Kolkata: Sourav Ganguly (icon), Shoaib Akhtar ($425,000), Ricky Ponting ($400,000), Brendon McCullum ($700,000), Chris Gayle ($800,000), Ajit Agarkar ($330,000), Dave Hussey ($625,000)

Chennai: MS Dhoni ($1.5 million), Muttiah Muralitharan ($600,00), Matthew Hayden ($375,000), Jacob Oram ($675,000), Stephen Fleming ($350,000), Parthiv Patel ($325,000), Joginder Sharma ($225,000), Albie Morkel ($650,000), Suresh Raina ($650,000)

Bangalore: Rahul Dravid (icon), Anil Kumble ($500,000), Jacques Kallis ($900,000), Zaheer Khan ($450,000), Mark Boucher ($450,000), Cameron White ($500,000), Wasim Jaffer ($150,000)

Hyderabad: Adam Gilchrist ($700,000), Andrew Symonds ($1.35 million), Herschelle Gibbs ($575,000), Shahid Afridi ($675,000), Scott Styris ($175,000), VVS Laxman ($375,000), Rohit Sharma ($750,000), Chamara Silva ($100,000)

Mohali: Yuvraj Singh (icon), Mahela Jayawardene ($475,000), Kumar Sangakkara ($700,000), Brett Lee ($900,000), Sreesanth ($625,000), Irfan Pathan ($925,000)

Delhi: Virender Sehwag (icon), Daniel Vettori ($625,000), Shoaib Malik ($500,000), Mohammad Asif ($650,000), AB de Villiers ($300,000), Dinesh Karthik ($525,000), Farveez Maharoof ($225,000), Tillakaratne Dilshan ($250,000), Gautam Gambhir ($750,000), Manoj Tiwary ($675,000)

Clearly the Indian players are attracting big bucks. The surprises were Raina, Tiwary, Kaif and Rohit Sharma. All of them were bought in excess of $650,000.
The Delhi team seems weaker compared to others. They don't have many renowned players. The people of Delhi don't seem too happy with their team, but the franchise owner is reportedly very happy.

Re: IPL Player Auctions

some very surprising decisions. karthik, tiwary, harbhajan and even dhoni are getting way more than they should. while ponting, warne, murali, kumble, hayden, younis, pollock, smitht are getting very less. 1.5 million of dhoni. thats crazy. 1.35 for symonds is understandable because he is a all rounder but i dont know how popular he will be.
chennai, kolkata and hyderabad look like the strongest teams. i think that delhi is the weakest till now.

Re: IPL Player Auctions

Can't believe Mike Hussey and Sarwan haven't been bought yet. A team like Hyderabad or Delhi for that matter could use them. Both are quick-scoring and Hussey in particular would be a good foil for Hyderabad's big hitters, rotating the strike and keeping the scoreboard ticking and able to bat through an innings.

Re: IPL Player Auctions

Ishant Sharma was the biggest pick in this round. Kolkata bagged him for $950,000. This makes Sourav Ganguly the latest entrant to the million dollar club. He is set to earn $1.09 million. India's Twenty20 World Cup hero RP Singh also managed to fetch a substantial amount of $875,000. Most of the other players were sold for their base price in this round.

Re: IPL Player Auctions

Mohammad Yousuf and Ashwell Prince were the only two players who were withdrawn. Of the 79 players, 77 players were sold at the base price or above.

Re: IPL Player Auctions

Strange that Glenn Mcgrath and Hussey didn't attract enough interest. I can't understand why no one would be interested in them. You could say that Mcgrath is past his prime but Hussey is still very much in his prime and he is a damn good player. Probably the doubt that he will be unavailable due to Australia's tour affected his price. At $350,000 it was a steal, much like Ricky Ponting and Matthew Hayden.
Mohammad Yousuf is entangled in a legal battle related to ICL so its understandable why no one would bid on him.

Re: IPL Player Auctions

there are a few surprises there. chennai and kolkata seem to have the strongest teams.
so how many millionaires is the IPL going to make?

I think Hyderabad together with Kolkata have got the most explosive batting lineups with the former having a good bowling option as well.

Bangalore seem to have the most balanced bowling lineup whilst the addition of McGrath to Delhi has bolstered theirs.

I think whilst having a solid batting lineup Chennai might have wanted one more big name bowler while Mumbai needed another batsman.

Mohali also have some big hitters and talented batsmen.

Will be interesting to see how Smith and Warne get along as teammates at Jaipur. It will be interesting to see how these squads' players gel as a team.

I see 5 of them: Tendulkar, Dravid, Yuvraj & Ganguly as icon players and Symonds. Sehwag misses out even as an icon player while others such as Lee, Jayasuriya and Sharma are close to the million mark.
