Pura Cup Final - New South Wales vs Victoria at SCG

The last game of the Australian domestic cricket season begins tomorrow morning in Sydney with New South Wales hosting Victoria.

New South Wales go into the game almost at full strength, with their Australian players available for selection while Victoria go into the game with no real regular Australian representatives.

The Blues will be hot favourites, their team boasts seven current Australian players and you feel that their firepower with the bat and the ball will be far too strong for Victoria, who are in their third final for the season after having won the Twenty20 title but losing the Ford Ranger competition to Tasmania.

This game may also go a long way to deciding the final few spots for Australia's tour to the West Indies. The favourite for the spinner's spot, Stuart MacGill, is playing in this match but contender Bryce McGain will also get a chance to stake his claim. Beau Casson, whose name has also been mentioned as a potential spin candiate is in the NSW squad but whether he plays will be another story. Mark Cameron is another whose name has been thrown into the ring for Australian contention and then there's Simon Katich who has been in brilliant form this season with the bat, perhaps he could make a comeback to the Australian side? Not only is there state supremacy but some players may also be playing for higher honours so this match becomes even more important for them.

This is also the last season that teams will compete for the Pura Cup, with Pura (who are a milk company) withdrawing their sponsorship at the end of the 2007-08 season. It is expected that the competition will revert back to its traditional title, which was the "Sheffield Shield" (and is way better).

Should be a good game regardless, NSW will go in as raging favourites but Victoria go in with really nothing to lose and if they manage to win, it will no doubt be an awesome party.

New South Wales won the toss and batted first. Been a pretty good choice so far, they've moved to 4/185 with a little less than a session remaining on day one. Phillip Hughes fell early for six runs, out to Peter Siddle in the second over of the day. Next to go was Phil Jaques, also out to Siddle, this time LBW for 53.

Next to go was the captain, Katich, who was out to potential Australian spinner Bryce McGain for 86 and then Michael Clarke was out to Dirk Nannes about seven overs ago for 13.

Currently at the crease are Dominic Thornely on 9 and Brad Haddin on 13. Peter Siddle is the only multiple wicket-taker at this stage.

For the teams, you can omit Mark Cameron and Grant Lambert from the NSW line-up and for the Victoria you can take out Clint McKay and Rob Quiney. After doing that, you'll have each teams playing XI.

The advantage is probably slightly with the Vics, 5/189 after 66 overs. That man Katich again has been the rock of NSW's innings, 86. Phil Jaques also chimed in with a patient 53. The Victorian bowling has been a team effort rather than any outstanding individual performances, Nannes, Siddle, Harwood and McGain sharing the 5 wickets that have fallen.
Can someone tell me who's the Victorian wicketkeeper for the final?

NSW reached 8/266 at stumps, Haddin fell to Siddle on what turned out to be the last ball before stumps so the umpires decided to call it a day then.

Thornely was out shortly after my previous post, Casson followed after a sluggish 17, which was made from 57 balls with Brett Lee following behind after being bowled by Nannes for eight. And then there was the wicket of Haddin at the end of the day. Bracken is currently not out on zero and Stuart Clark will come in to bat tomorrow morning.

Peter Siddle was the Vics most effective bowler with 4/57, Dirk Nanness has 2/53 with Harwood and McGain sharing the other two wickets.

Honours probably even on day one, hard to say who's really in control. Clark and Bracken aren't bad with the bat so the Blues could still make 350 if they put their minds to it. We'll find out how good NSW's score is when Victoria bats tomorrow.

NSW were bowled out for 281. Stuart Clark made it to 13 and was the last man out. Bracken scored a duck with MacGill making one not out.

Peter Siddle was the best Victorian bowler with five wickets, Dirk Nanness took three.

Victoria started well in reply but their batsmen failed to fire with the exception of Brad Hodge who made 84. The next best scorer was Nick Jewell with 26.

Brett Lee starred, taking 4/72, his four wickets were the last four to fall. Stu MacGill was the only multiple wicket-taker with 2/36. The Vics made 216 all out, handing NSW a lead of 75.

The Blues had to face six overs at the end of the day and did so without losing any wickets, they made 0/23 before heading off for stumps, Phillip Hughes was not out on 10 and Phil Jaques was 12 not out.

An interesting day but NSW are on top at the moment, their star players are proving to be too good at the moment, the Vics will need to work hard early tomorrow to get themselves back into the game.

New South Wales are in a commanding position now. With all the talk of their internationals, so far it's been Phillip Hughes that's been the star in their 2nd innings, his maiden FC century was thrilling to watch. And what a match to get it in too.
The Victorians need wickets quickly, NSW have 8 wickets in hand and lead by nearly 300 runs, but Katich and Clarke are in now (Katich again, 69 runs, the Bushrangers need to get him out). And the SCG is a notoriously difficult wicket to chase totals on, especially on day 5.

Well, NSW turned the screws on Day Three with a solid batting effort. They finished at 5/352 at stumps on Day 3, a lead of 417 runs overall. Youngster Phillip Hughes was the star, the teenager smashed his maiden first-class century, making a commanding 116 which included 16 fours and 1 six. Hughes was also the youngest player to score an Australian domestic first-class hundred, the previous record was held by Stuart Law who achieved the feat at 21 years of age with Hughes beating that mark by two years at 19. The young gun was ably supported by Simon Katich who scored 92 and in the process set a new record for the most runs scored in Australian domestic four-day history, the previous record was held by Michael Bevan with 1464 runs, Katich's 92 sees him finish with 1506 runs at the impressive average at 94.12.

Katich's demise was inflicted by Michael Clarke who effectively ran his captain out after an accurate throw from Andrew MacDonald. Earlier, Phil Jaques was trapped in front by Bryce McGain for 23 and then Hughes was out caught by McGain off Cameron White. Katich was then run out, Clarke then fell to Peter Siddle after edging one to the keeper and then Siddle claimed his second wicket, bowling Brad Haddin for three about 45 mins from the close of play.

Siddle has been Victoria's best bowler in this match and probably their best player for the game so far. He's their only multiple wicket-takerat the moment.

A big lead for NSW, 417 will be very, very hard for Victoria to overcome but that figure will only get bigger, they'll need some strong batting to get even near their potential target. NSW will be looking to get a lead of about 550 before declaring, they should be aiming to achieve that by about lunch time.

Day Four promises to be a good one, we'll see what unfolds then.

Glad to see you guys following the game.

There's two blogs about the match, but from slightly different perspectives.. here's mine which is tainted Blue, and then there's the Mexican one by Uncle J-Rod of Cricket with Balls fame.

btw you've got a truckload of broken images on your CMPS page - should be able to fix them by running the CMPS admin script and updating your images to the CMPS engine through there.. or just copy your images directory into the root so they are in two places.

btw Thornley gone, that new ball's still got some sting in it. Hoping for Lee and Clark to tonk it around a bit and push the lead over 550 before lunch, then have a bowl....

600+ would be ideal though, what with the baggy green attack on a day 4 SCG track... don't want to leave it to chance

If you see any problems, fire off a PM to the admins so they can fix any problems that need a tune-up.

Pretty safe to say that NSW couldn't possibly lose this game in the position that they are in right now.

Been a very good day for NSW so far, they've moved to 6/510 with Dom Thornely the only wicket to fall today and he was out a long time ago for 21. Since then, Beau Casson and Brett Lee have combined for 155 runs, Lee is on 75 and Casson is up to 79 now with NSW's lead up to a massive 575 runs.

NSW won't lose from here, something would have to seriously go wrong for them to not have the trophy by the end of tomorrow.

NSW 7/533 at tea.

Casson was bowled by McGain for 89. Brett Lee is on 83 and Nathan Bracken is on one off 11 balls.

The Blues lead by 598 runs now. 29 overs to go today and 96 to be bowled tomorrow so still a fair way to go in this match. As Far as Victoria are concerned they are well and truly out of this game, their bowling in these finals is becoming a major problem and has let them down once again.

NSW seem set on batting. I think they still remember the game where the Vics made 700 against them, so we may see a similar retaliation here.

Binga out for 97, a true shame he couldn't get to three figures. Vics need to score over 600 runs in a day to win now. Sad to say I think it's beyond them :(

NSW delcared at 8/563, a lead of 628. Brett Lee was caught and bowled by Siddle for 97 and then Katich decided to close the Blues' innings.

In reply, the Vics started well but Stuart MacGill has just claimed two wickets in two balls, which included Brad Hodge for a first ball duck.

Vics are 2/50 after ten overs, Nick Jewell has top score with 23 not out.

Was always going to be a tough ask to win when most Victoria v NSW games end in draws, although this will have a result as the Vics will throw everything at it tomorrow

Although Hodgey is a great player if the Vics were ever going to win or get close its the 2 at the crease that were going to need to do the hard work with both having big scores in the past against the Blues

We will most likely be ripped apart early with some dud taking 5 wickets and lose the game by 400 runs

Which dud? Lee? Clark? MacGill?

NSW has a lot better attack than the pies the Victorian bowlers (with the exception of Siddle) have served up in this game. Third final in a row that the Victorian bowlers have failed to have any impact on the opposition batsmen, that would be a slightly worrying trend.

Victoria made it through to stumps without any further losses, they finished 2/96 at stumps, still needing 533 runs from the final day. That would mean they need to score at 5.55 runs per over tomorrow from the 96 over that will be sent down on Day 5.

Nick Jewell is 44 not out with David Hussey on 31.

Last day of the domestic season tomorrow, Victoria will need a miracle to win while NSW needs eight wickets and they won't even need to do that to win the game. Promises to be good once again.
