Re: Ricky Ponting's Australia - 2009 Champions Trophy Winners. Offical Praise Thread.
Every player I think falls into that middle bracket of yours, I don't think there has been anyone in the past 50 years that falls into that first bracket. Even guys like Gilchrist have had their times, like when he argued with an umpire for a full 5 minutes over whether he appealed or not, things like that, that is part of the game.
There needs to be another bracket underneath the lower one you have for the lowest of players.
Ponting has a spotty career, yes, but that's because he is captain. Every captain is like that, and I think Strauss is just as good a guy as he is.
I am not saying this because I am so blatenty biased, but I think Australia has had the best record over a number of years. Because they have been around the top since the start of international cricket on and off, but mostly on, they haven't had to deal with as much, they haven't had the need to cheat. I think that Australia is therefore examined closer, because obviously the wonder team of the just past generation 'had' to be cheating to win so much, it couldn't be just talent. The Aussies should be the role models as far as I am concerned. Biased, it may be, but that is what I think.
Controlled aggression is already here. Look at Lee and Johnson. Scary stuff.
Gamesmanship, absolutely not. Throw any player that looks that way out. I don't think Haddin is quite as bad as you say he is, but honestly I haven't seen much of him as he has spent his whole career at NSW.
Also the game should stay in control of the umpires hands to ensure that players have the need for the sportsmanship instead of gamesmanship. The umpires need the player's help, and the players need the umpire.
