Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

With Luke Ronchi being dropped for WA's lineup on Saturday (having being long considered to be the understudy to Brad Haddin), has someone else assumed favouritism as the 2nd keeper for the upcoming Ashes tour of England?
Cricinfo - Ronchi axed by Western Australia
I believe so, and I believe that man would be Tim Paine (and it's a serious opinion this time around).
Is there still hope for Ronchi yet?

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

In the shorter form of the game(T20,ODI) i believe the crosthwaite should be chosen.
He must be one of the best for late hitting in a innings, some of his shots are extroadinary.
In tests, should be either paine or ronchi.I'd still rather Ronchi though.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

Still Ronchi in my opinion. Just needs to get his act together for WA and start proving that he what it takes to bring his game to the next level. Being picked for those two Twenty20 games shows that the selectors still hold him in high regard.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

The all seem to be able to keep but none of them make consistant runs. Haddin is gonna have to hang around a while!

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

Despite being a Victorian fan, I despise Adam Crosthwaite as much as possible, Ronchi gets my vote.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

Time for my ritual pro-Manou spiel:

Manou is the best keeper in Australia, bar none. If batting was not a factor in selection, Manou should definitely be chosen. Unfortunately, it is. And while Manou is no mug with the bat, he certainly wouldn't get a game as a specialist batter, in contrast to Haddin, Paine or Ronchi, who could both warrant a spot with the bat alone. Perhaps if Johnson was up to becoming number 7 bat then Manou could slot into number 8 and do well, but the Australian selectors will never take that risk. It will be Bad Haddin for a few years to come.

The Jack Russells and Darren Berrys of the world would feel for Manou.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

I agree, Manou is a fine keeper, but his batting isn't enough. I'm a firm believer in a wicketkeeper needing be able to bat. It's like picking a specialist fieldsman IMO.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

Crosthwaite is now playing for victoria as a specialist bat. is this not food for thought? although the Vics are fairly depleted. he's young, and had a decent mentor in Darren Berry. give Haddin 5 or 6 years and Crosthwaite could step straight in.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

Crosthwaite or Ronchi in the shorter form.

Paine or Crosthwaite in the longer form.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

Is Crothswaite or Wade keeping? I thought it was Crothswaite. That's beside the point though, because if his batting wasn't up to scratch Wade could stand in, meaning he is basically playing as a specialist batsman.

Crothswaite isn't actually a bad option.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

Luke Ronchi still has to be the favourite.
Crosthswaite and Paine are still a long way off.
It only matters if Haddin gets injuried because he has got that spot for the next 3-5 years.
Gun.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

Wade scored a ton in the recent Sheffield Sheild the other day, so if his from continues, he could be worth a look.

Chris Hartley did the same for QLD against NSW.

Re: Who would be favoured to be Australia's no.2 keeper now?

Wade broke the Tasmanian record or something close to it yeah?

The kid can obviously bat, may be worth a look in the future, I havn't seen him, what is his glovework like?

I know Tassie Tigers Rule isn't too keen on him:p

Hahaha.:D
No signature anymore (finally got rid of it).
TBH I don't particularly care anymore. Never taken to the guy but how he goes or who he plays for doesn't fuss me in the slightest.
Having said that, anyone is welcome to wear the Baggy Green of Tasmania. Speaking of which, his contract with the Bushrangers is up at the end of the year and reading The Mercury on Saturday he hasn't completely ruled out a return to his native state.;)
Still might be behind a few others at this stage but one to watch for sure.

Couldn't see him playing as a keeper in front of Paine. His best bet would be going to NSW to try and take the gloves off 'fatty' Smith.

Smith's a gun. One of my favourite players. Would hate to see it happen. :(
