Subbies 2011/12

spectator comp.

Two very valid points Nancy. In respect to the first, I accept this is a participation comp. As to the second issue, it would leave a very empty feeling if the senior grade GF in particular could not be completed due to no reserve weekend provisions. Does the comp have contingency plans for the senior grade GF? Can members help me out on this question? As to curating, I would offer my services at short notice if it was the only obstacle to the senior GF being played on a reserve weekend.
Problem is they run the season extremely tight. They can't add an additional week at the back end as most grounds are handed back at the end of March. Only way to fix this to start finals a week earlier, converting a two dayer during the season to 2 one dayers.

Big news is that the battle lines have again been drawn between Cricket Vic and Subbies in relation to the dividend!

For the record SS,Harwood 368 @46,Lewis 186@13.
Dont think it would matter anyway, with a top 8 like that before them unlikely they'd ever get a hit!
Weopo doing the right thing by his club, helping out the kids in the 4s.
look having a ball in the 4ths batting with the future of the club makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up..my 14 year old opening partner got a great hungey too....on the 5th and 6th placings im sure my club would b proud having the 2s "5th" and the 4s "6th" touch up the higher rank teams!

Look fwd to you keeping us posted on the dividend 'battle'.
Many years ago I was on the executive of a cricket ass'n and there was then what was termed 'the Minister of Lands determination' in respect to clearly defined dates for the rights of football and cricket in respect to shared use of municipal playing surfaces, March 31st being cut- off date for cricket and Sept. 30th for footy. Can any members tell me whether defined dates are still in force or, do municipal councils nowadays have more discretion on this matter? In the event of the latter, it may be possible for a reserve day for the senior GF to be in the first week of April.

No hope of cricket in April Westy,as i understand the divi will drop to about $10 k for the next 3 or 4 years, after that, who knows.
Semi Finals tomorrow,weather permitting,tips are;
Melton v Caulfield-after being smashed by Elsternwick last week, the visitors will be keen to atone ,much will depend on who can bat first and post a total, impossible to go past melton with Mick Allen in imposing form though.
Werribee v Elsternwick-gonna stick with Elsty, they didnt let me down last week and I reckon they can pull off another shock win
In the Sth/East Oakleigh and Plenty Valley will start very short priced faves and both should win setting up what could be a great granny.
Hope theres no interruptions and goodluck to all

Certainly at our club, we get the facilities on 1 October and hand back by 31 March. With footy clubs always wanting earlier for pre season, no chance of hanging on!

My thoughts:
Melton v Caulfield: Should be a good match up. Caulfield will be stung by last week and flogged Melton earlier in the year. Problem is that Caulfield are horribly out of form. Bartlett, Richardson, hardly made a run, Damiano & Cross have been hot & cold. Have to back Melton with Allen in sublime touch and an unbackable favourite in thr medal.
Werribee v Elsternwick: Both teams going beautifully. Wicks going well and have a great bowling attack and O'Shea in hot form. However, Werribee's bowling is as good and their batting is stronger, Tiges for me.

In North/East, can't go past Oakleigh and will go the Hills in an upset. PV's best 2 bowlers out!

congrats to all the teams preparing for a grand final this week.

I was surprised to see Oakleighs 3rds hosting the grand final against Endeavour Hills at Scammell reserve - I would have thought that the 8 grand finals being played this weekend should have been rostered at a 'main ground' wherever possible.

Scammell hosted a semi final and not a ball was bowled on Sunday. It would be disappointing if the same situation arose this weekend.

Nothing wrong with Scammell. One of the best 2nd grounds in the comp. Would not want to play a final on Brighton or EH 2nd ground .Well done to the Brighton boys with 2 teams in Grand Finals. Carrying the flag for the South. Malvern the only other GF side from the South. Least 1 south side will win a premiership. Sure South will bounce back next year against North. Werribee and Melton clearly best 2 sides all year in 1's. Picking Werribee in upset to win weather permitting.

not suggesting to play it on anyones number 2 ground. However playing on the number 1 at Endeavour where you could cover the entire square makes more sense to me than playing it at Scammell.

In short all grand finals should be played on main grounds if they are available

Endeavour Hills 4th XI will play at the main ground there, and deserve to after finishing top and winning the right to host.

If the lower placed 3rd XI got a home final for EH, and the 4th's were pushed to the lower ground after doing everything right that would not seem fair.

I like your idea in theory, but after speaking to a few of the guys in the sides, and who have played lower grade finals before, they claim the home ground advantage is very pronounced, and that is lost if they go to the main ground, where often they havent played at all year.

As for Scammell it is a good 2nd ground, and actually had its best wicket for the season on the weekend after we gave the council a rev up. Just a shame that the 30 odd mm of rain that fell Saturday night soaked the surrounding table. The actual playing wicket was perfect on Sunday, but the square was unable to even be walked on.

Might be a case that all finals require full square coverage for all XI's from next year? Would require some negotiation and resource pooling with shared covers, but certainly a better result than games called off and teams not getting a chance to play in finals.

Werribee will win and comfortably. Have a great line up very evenly spread. I am sure they would love Wolfey back this week, not sure where he is at, but he was very ginger at the end of the game against us. For Melton, Harwood needs to bowl and bowl well!

My understanding is that the reason many VTCA matches continued on the Sunday when play could not in the subbies, is that their tables were fully covered. Next season, the VTCA requires all clubs to have a cover large enough to entirely cover their table and the 2 VTCA clubs for whom I curate already have them. Also, during a week when showers are predicted, these clubs lay out a one-strip cover which a curator working on his own can easily apply to protect the pitch during preparation. When the VTCA wishes the complete table cover to be laid earlier than the Friday evening (due to heavy rain being forecast), it emails their clubs. It is the clubs' responsibility to provide the labour needed for the laying and removal of the full-size covers. (Same rule as in the subbies). Given that the finals are run on a tight schedule, all subbies finals venues should in future have full table cover.

Have heard rumours that Wolfe did his ACL in the ton against your mob and that they are looking at jabbing him up for the big one. Will be interesting to see what happens, its a big risk taking in an injured player but he is nearly worth it considering the form he is in.

I really think that this game could be decided by the toss and who gets to bat first. I think it'll be a high scoring affair and that runs on the board in the 1st dig could be the difference. Werribee have much more depth in their batting but Melton's bowling is much stronger. You're right though SS Harwood needs to bowl for Melton to win this. Saw butch Gale was named in Melton's 2's last week, it will be extremely interesting to see if he comes back in, you'd think he would and that Merlo would miss out but it'll be a tough call. For Melton to win they'll need to get runs out of either Kirk or Gale as too much is being left to Allen, McKenna and Harwood at the minute.

My prediction is Werribee (just) and Shaun Dean MoM.
Plenty Valley in an upset in the other final with Ingram to star.

Agree YWL, but would say Werribee's bowling is very underrated. Have 5-6 fast/medium options as well as a couple of spinners.

That being said it'll be a great game. Pity its in Melton, too far for most people, especially and old timer with 2 kids who didn't see Dad for 6 months and lives on the other side!

good call and I stand corrected on the example that I used. I do think that with 28 grounds available we should try to find 8 first eleven grounds to host the biggest game of the year

If the subbies clubs had invested some of their annual dividend on full-table covers there would be no need to engage in 'some negotiation and resource pooling with shared covers' as suggested by you. By contrast, the VTCA clubs have never enjoyed an annual dividend but are more advanced in protecting their pitches than the subbies. The more senior competition is falling behind. If you wish to retain the subbies status you had better get your act together. If that means club members need to take a more hands-on approach to fully protecting your tables, do so.

Tend to agree with you here, Westland.

Most subbies clubs are happy to live off the CV dividend that they are given. And the perception is that this is spent on player payments (as the current rule seems to be farcical and un-enforceable).

Play the finals on the good 1st XI grounds with decent facilities.

Personally speaking, it seems like the VTCA are getting the leg-up on Subbies as the 2nd best local club competition in Victoria.

Agree totally about the way subbies clubs are spending their money.
One club has no covers at its second ground but brings a POM out every year?? How is that investing in your club and its future.
Have never seen a VTCA game and don't really know much about the comp but it would appear we have some work to do to maintain and improve our standards
