Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

McDonald shouldn't go near an Australian team ever again.

Best XI is:

Marsh
Warner
+Ronchi/Paine
D Hussey
White
Watson
M Hussey
Johnson
Heal/Doherty
Nannes
Tait

Haddin is a good T20 batsman when in form. It just seems to me he hasn't been in form for about a year. With that lack of form comes those brainless shots, he definitely has the technique.

His keeping has improved two-fold, but saying that I would still think Paine is a better keeper. I don't want Ronchi in the team, Hartley is ahead of him. Hartley was the best keeper in all forms last year, best batsman in the two longer formats and second best (after Paine) in T20s. So for T20s it is Paine then Hartley for me. Hartley is too old for a permanent T20 fixture I think, not in physical years but injury years. He seems to be getting on a little bit now, out a couple of games across the last season.

Paine should come in, but if he does then does it start one of those cycling through keepers (and for that sake captains with the Clarke issue) willy nilly? That is the thing I hate he most. I suppose it has worked for England though :p

Don't agree. It won't start a cycling through keepers thing. Look how long they have stuck with Haddin. Why should replacing him start a cycle of anything? Unless there is injuries. Paine should be in the 20/20 just to keep him interested. Haddin isn't that much use and if they are prepared to use an unsuitable person at 3 just to keep his hand in with captaining what's wrong with using a more suitable keeper and batsman in the starting 11 in 20/20?

The problem with NSP is that they use contradictory reasoning for important decisions and as far as I can see the contradictions (or shall we be kind and say dialectical reasoning?) come out with the dud hand.

No, you stick with White and Paine as they dont play tests so they wont be rested at any stage

Main thing against it is they dont like to fly in too many T20 speciallists, so it might require them adding Paine to the 50 over squads as cover to justify his place then you are just left with Warner, Dussey and Nannes as those only playing T20s

You are both right with the sticking with the one keeper thing, I'm just a bit of a traditionalist and think that Australia has been kept strong by using the one keeper and one captain through thick and thin. Only an emotional attachment, and I don't like seeing other countries with bucketloads of both, wouldn't like it at all if there was a different keeper for all three forms.

@Ljp
What has McDonald done wrong? I admit I don't like him that much, but I would like to know your reasoning.

Re: Australian T20I XI - Selection Thread

Well now there is 2 captains so changing 1 of them wouldnt hurt, besides Australia has reguarly had 2 different keepers and 2 different captains for the 2 forms when the test incumbentent was nearing the end of their careers they groomed the next one at ODI level, now there is a lower step to start at

Obviously you wouldnt pick an experienced player as keeper or an older captain, but always be someone who may be next in line for the international duties

Doesn't really fit into the current line-up that well, Australia already have four pace bowlers (Johnson, Tait, Nannes and Watson) so a fifth leaves no spin option unless one of those four were dropped. Dropping any of those guys would appear highly unlikely given the success that the pace trio had at the T20 World Cup so all three would keep their place. Watson is a favourite of the selectors so he won't be getting dropped anytime soon.

I don't really rate McDonald as a player anyway, his games for Australia have come out of a need for a specific player rather than earning his games on pure merit. His highest score of 43 in T20 doesn't impress me enough even if he hasn't had many opportunities up the order. In reality, there's no real spot for him unless Watson is suudenly dropped or is unavailable due to injury and even then the selectors may pick another player to come in, probably a specialist bat.

Can anyone believe the lies that Hilditch has been so barefaced to say about Clarke in the World 20/20?

Well it looks like Michael Clarke has done the right thing and given up the T20 format, you would think White would be the most likely candidate for his replacement as captain.

edit - White captain, Paine deputy.

Well yes maybe. The question is what are the selectors thinking. Will they maintain the directionless method they use and begin anointing a new captain to be for other forms or will they now begin to see T20 as a separate game altogether and develop it in isolation to ODI and test? It is impossible to know what they are doing.
Personally i would like to see T20 dropped from the international calendar and concentrate on it being a francise based tournament game away from national cricket. Players may choose to go to the game but these will be players that don't have the body or ticker for test cricket. With the money made from the local tournament the ACB could pay test players more as a reason not to go to T20.

This is all just a nice way for him to get out of looking like he's been dropped. As I'm pretty sure he has.

But I don't care, this seems like a big win to have got rid of Clarke from that squad. Now he can concentrate on trying to be a proper test batsman again.

Absolute travesty that Shaun Marsh isn't playing. He's probably the best T20 opener Australia has at the moment and he can't get a game. I'm hoping he's included for the ODI's as the team needs some stability in the top order after such a poor test series.

This must be Whites big chance to show his leadership potential. If he has success in the T20's then goes on and plays a big role in the ODI's and world cup he must surely be a chance at the ODI captaincy. It's all up to Cameron.

Strange isn't it? He's not in the first ODI either. I assume they are waiting till he loses form before they'll be willing to pick him.

Look at David Hussey, poorest year in ages so he's back in the squad.

And looked ordinary tonight too. Still don't know why Marsh isn't playing, he destroyed NSW on the weekend and is having his best domestic season yet. Australia could have done with another player tonight who could score 50-odd off 30 balls or is able to play a steadying role. I've never seen so many ugly across-the-line slogs. If the ball is straight play bloody straight!!!!

Sorry but Brett Lee shouldn't be playing for Australia, has no form at all playing for New South Wales and just seems to have lost it. What happened to Nannes? Even Clint McKay. This is just getting ridiculous.

Dussey looked like crap, didn't he? I couldn't believe he was just leaving so many balls. And even Cowcorner was blocking balls back to the bowlers. I wasn't sure what I was watching when they had so many batsmen in the tank and were playing the boring overs of one day cricket. God, it made for shit viewing. It reminded me of when Dussey was in the one day team 2 years ago. He was effing horrible.

I agree about Shaun Marsh, he hits straight beautifully, even in 20/20, he keeps his balance when batting,

Have to agree Beeswax.Warner seems to be struggling and a lotof teams have worked him out with the spinners. The Poms bowled well but White and Hussey were poor and probably cost us the game in the end. great effort to get as close as we did.
Having said that i would still give them another chance as they are proven players.Brett Lee bowling two full tosses in his last over did not help. What has Nannes done to p*ss of the selectors?

Averaged 66 last year in the Big Bash, I cant see why you wouldnt like him for the T20 side, he is by far Australias best T20 batsman and he proves you dont have to slog to make runs and still have a damn good strike rate doing it

Marsh has better stats in the Big Bash and the IPL than Warner, but Warner has squatter's rights.

He has better stats than Watson for that matter at domestic level.

I just don't understand how he doesn't get an opening gig or in at 3 for Aus.

He's not a favourite with the CA, that's why. Guys like Warner would have to have form falling off the face of the earth to be dropped.
