Just a quick one....
Highett West has a Casino Night on tomorrow night. Anyone is welcome to come. $30 per head gets you; finger food, a drink on entry, $100 worth of chips, NAB Cup on the big screen & t0pless barmaids. We'll also be serving pizza at $1 a slice.
Games include; poker, black jack, roulette, crown & anchor and simulated horse racing (Trackside). It was mentioned that the simulated horse racing would cost an extra $10 and have separate prize money, however this has now changed and will be included in the $30.
Prize money ($250, $100 & a slab) will be awarded to the people with the most chips at night’s end and handed to the winners by one of our lovely ladies.
Happy hour starts at 7:30pm.

Longy scores posted tonight show West Bentleigh being bowled out by Elwood for 15 !!. Surely this is a typo. Can anyone enlighten us ?

Chooka yesterday was a pretty freakish event, they were missing a few players due to kids and the 2nds playing finals, and the top players for them seemed to get good balls early and the ground was the slowest ive ever seen it. Marc Reid is a very proud player and clubman and Im sure things wont head down hill at west bentleigh.
It was the first time ive ever played in the ones and won a game like that, i remember when i first got in and we were getting rolled for 40s and 50s, its a shit feeling. They all hung around for a couple of beers after the game which wouldnt have been easy but credit needs to go to them for that.

Thanks for the reply. When I posted only the scores were up, not in the full scorecard and I seriously thought it was a typo hence the request for confirmation. Low scores are nothing new but anything under 40 in Longy is pretty rare.

Anyone who has played the game for a while will recall days when everything goes wrong. WB obviously had one of those yesterday. Good effort to stick around for a beer afterwards. Can be bloody cruel game sometimes.

Evening All,
Apologies Merl hasn't been his usual dilligent self on the BCF but as we get to the business end I am back in business.

Jimmy apologies I wrote your tips against another round of the BD fixture and Old Bill can join the other sooky la las who opted out of the MH tipping if you aren't in it you don't get a say.

Well old Vo Rouge is 6 lengths clear at the famous Flemington Clock Tower with Jimmy and Mentalist running on for the places.

Now that we have got that stuff out of the way time for a bit of the full bottle

The Billionaires with Merl's pre post Brownlow certainty Ash Russell contributing significantly again have the Bricker boys looking at Woolnough!!!

The Machine found the jumper leads to keep the re started engine purring along and in merl's wildest dreams could they knock off the time peice thimbles in the penultimate round.I see the photo shy reluctant BCFer Burgmeister had a chance to make himself a hero but just like his BCF contributions no cigar!!

The resurgent Royals are marching towards the four but again have left their run a bit late as the the draw bridge slowly rises around the final for castle door!!!The doctor less panthers show just how badly his bunge shoulder is needed.

Merl,s very own beach boys achieved a record low Longy score against them when the cowboys just came up with blank after blank. The Field Marshall led the troops magnificently and it appears Merl may need to become a Facebook friend to get the warts and all account of the demolition.

The Golfers again finished over par but the lazy time piece thimbles have yet again let the cricketing public down with no information on my cricket, but he will keep sticking up for them.

The Moose or Polar Bear as he is apparently known as these days led the pretenders to a narrow win over the disappeared Peter Parker's mob who have gone right off the boil after Christmas.Parker come back the old boy doesn't have many friends I need you.

In the Bluff Rd Cup

The Court Jesters turned Jimmy's mob back into the pathetic purple and Golds and have given themselves a sniff of avoiding relegation.

Merl's very own Heighters touched up the timepiece thimbles in an omninous display before the top of the table clash with Wallet Park who ran out of change this week!

The Billionaire twos just march along as the quiet achievers and young Brisbane and the ageing veteran Manakis C just cannot break into the all powerfull Billionaire ones despite both having very good seasons.Do not be surprised if they are the ones to face Merl's Heighters in the Big Dance!!!!!!By the way they touched up Vinnie's mob who has been both quiet and unsighted on the BCF for sometime and will relinquish his hard fought MH trophy to Merl's personal courier service very shortly.

The oasisless Bottys mob bounced back after last week's pathetic effort to win the big game when they short changed Wallet Park.Billy Bob Thornton snared 4 scalps while Steve ' Lazarus ' Worker again came back from the dead to talk himself into 3 wickets while one of Merl's favourite the old oasisless Bott picked up 2 for himself.will they have their dancing shoes on for the March Grand Ballroom?????

The Ageless Golden Greek single handly beat Uncle Mick's mob and kept his name under the selectors eye with a classic 74.I am sure Uncle could could give us a blow by blow description of one of the CMCa all time greats if not the Greatest players
one legged knock!!!!!

Merl's original very own boys from Williams street burst the Shelton wonder boy bubble when they easily accounted for the party boys and as computers haven't found their way down south no idea of wonder boys contribution.

The old boy is getting a bit tired but did see the tied game in the Bobby Dazzler for which no points were allocated by Merl and it appears that most of the favourites won games but I will leave it up to Army to expand on it if possible.Did see Army's mob get up at distraction park and only need to get over the lowly Southside to be in the finals action.

Merl does led the Bobby Dazzler by 1 point from Army and will be looking to add the the BD to his MH to take out the daily double in tipping.

A reminder to all even those sooky la las I will be running the Father Christmas finals tipping contest where you need to pick the winners in all grades of the finals.Archie was the inaugural winner and I will have to track him down to retrieve the trophy!!

Good luck to all players and tipsters and Jimmy French or Australian version the mighty Merlot Vo Rogue will be hard to catch!!!!!!!

Merl over and out see you in the winners circle!!!!!!

Some of them would have had more beers than runs as I see Xavier Tras ( extras )was equal top score with 3

Apologies for kicking the Cowboys while they are down

I missed the action unfortunately Merl. The back gave way a couple of weeks ago and I was planning to play a role from the other side of the fence, however due to a few no-shows on Saturday I found myself playing in I Grade & E grade throughout the day. By all reports there was some big hitting as the GG wound back the clock. I would hasten to say he'd be in the selector's eye given our attack was lacking 2 of our better 3 bowlers and the 3rd of those 3 better bowlers broke down after bowling 1 ball. That said, you still have to make them and indeed he did.
A very impressive turn of form from Moorabbin West in Woolnough. I wouldn't have thought they'd get the result against Wash Ups. I'm sure Chelsea will be happy to see the Wash Ups get rolled and see a bit of doubt creep in for their top of table clash as they head into finals.

The CMCA Executive needs to sit down over the winter and seriously analyze where the competition is heading. If the Executive and Clubs cannot hear the alarm bells ringing then they are living in count cuckoo land. The latest performance by West Bentleigh highlights not just a bad day but some serious structural issues within the competition that have been developing over the past few years. If you examine how many inordinate low scores(refer below) have been registered this season compared to previous seasons, in what has been effectively a one day competition, then there is something seriously not right. Four or five years ago the four piece ball was introduced into the competition so as to try and level the playing field with respect to the dominance of ball over bat; especially the ridiculous swing that a two piece ball generates. Now we have probably some of the best grounds in any standard of cricket, synthetic pitches, but the players coming through are just not up to it.

Is it a coaching issue at junior level or senior level, or are the better players dumping CMCA clubs? If so,why? Do the Representative games effectively kill our competition by siphoning talented players to other clubs in the guise of playing a superior level of cricket, or are there too many teams surviving on the performance of one or two very good players who end up carrying the rest of the team and the coaches are happy to run with this as they are only interested in a premiership?

The statistics below highlight an alarming trend and unless clubs and administrators start to address these issues our competition will end up becoming a glorified VTCA/Subbies junior competition and the seniors competition will become a pub competition played on Saturday/Sunday afternoons. The current CMCA junior competition appears to exist to support VTCA & Sub District clubs and accommodates players who attend the Private school system. No criticism against these clubs as they are clearly working hard to recruit kids to their clubs.

There is also the temptation of clubs to try and buy their way out of trouble, by recruiting high priced imports which may solve some short term issues but realistically it will only result in clubs getting into financial troubles. Bentleigh Uniting is the exception to the rule by topping up an effective senior and junior playing list.

Maybe the time to start rationalizing the competition has arrived. It is going to be a tough call, but the alternative is just wait for these clubs to start falling over or allow the standard to deteriorate to such a point that everyone just walks away.

Below is a list of current clubs competing in the twighlight competition, and as you can see there are 78 teams registered with the CMCA, with 54 of the teams (69.2%) are either from the VTCA or Sub District clubs with the remainder being traditional CMCA clubs.

Could it be that the bowling is just that good??
Just on that Rd.1 game, Clocker, AERSL actually defended 62 when they bowled out Union for 61 which equates to 6 out of 10 games they've been skittled for double figures. Hard to believe if you look at the way they pulled Moorabbin West's pants down last round. You have to wonder whether it's a mindset thing given that 80% of this season has been 1 day cricket. And from the reports coming out of AERSL already our Rd.11 fixture is likely to be a 1 day game due to the state of Memorial Oval.

Interesting thoughts Clocker.

The season has certainly been a strange one, but perhaps the inclement weather and the lack of training and cricket played may have had a more telling influence on the standard of cricket?

Agree about the juniors though.

That's a very good point, BW. We've had record low numbers this season at training. Players have dropped off as well as being scared away by the weather at times. Couple that with playing every 2nd week and the fact that there has been a number of nights washed out anyway and it's very hard for players to be at the top of their game. We even got to a point where the committee made a decision to cancel Tuesday nights because we'd be lucky to get 4 people turn up. Our results have been a direct reflection of the commitment from our group. I'm sure we're not the only club who has suffered under the circumstances.

clocker you must have some serious time on your hands, my points are as follows;
# lets be honest, most teams are carried by between 2- 6 players, the better teams have 8-9.
# lack of training (weather) and too many one dayers this year (the weather will never be this bad again)
# lack of technique in younger players coming through, (they all think they have to score at a run a ball) it is the generation thing, they all have the want now pay for it later mentality. This may only get worse with more and more 20/20 cricket being played.
# cmca should have a look at how many junior teams each club has. possibly capping the number of teams each club can have, ie there is no point one club having 10 teams and the club down the road having 1, if they were capped you would have a better spread of talent throughout the comp.
# money for players in the comp is steadily increasing, it is only going to strech the gap from the strongest to weakest.
# at the end of the day the cmca is a metropolitan cricket comp at the bottom of the food chain, if someone is really talented they will probably going and try somewhere else.
just a few things to ponder

clocker you must have some serious time on your hands,
Yes Hack, just enjoying a couple of quiet ones whilst enjoying some overdue holidays.
lets be honest, most teams are carried by between 2- 6 players, the better teams have 8-9.
Looks like Mackie broke the mould this week with their 8 & 9 saving them. Everyone contributes irrespective of their relative abilities or position on the ladder..
lack of training (weather) and too many one dayers this year (the weather will never be this bad again)
May Professor Flannery and Bob Brown hunt you down for your heresy. There are places called indoor stadiums. They can be booked at short notice and you can undertake training for a couple of hours so the ‘can’t train excuse does not wash’. Even on a Saturday you can still train instead of sitting around drinking cans. One of the reasons Uniting is sitting on top 10-0.
lack of technique in younger players coming through, (they all think they have to score at a run a ball) it is the generation thing, they all have the want now pay for it later mentality. This may only get worse with more and more 20/20 cricket being played.
Are you saying that the coaches cannot or will not do their jobs? In the old days you dropped a player who would not follow instructions, generational or not.I would enjoy watching a kid try one of those shots at Uniting. He would not last long.
cmca should have a look at how many junior teams each club has. possibly capping the number of teams each club can have, ie there is no point one club having 10 teams and the club down the road having 1, if they were capped you would have a better spread of talent throughout the comp.
Sounds good in theory, loved to see how it will be implemented especially since there are clubs that are not interested in having juniors. When a kid rocks upto a club to play with his mates he will be told to ‘sorry house full’ you have to go down the road? He will just go home. Trust me the better players will somehow manage to be kept.

money for players in the comp is steadily increasing, it is only going to strech the gap from the strongest to weakest.

Free market not much you can do. Most clubs have money to spend, silly if it just sits in the Bank.Executive cannot stop payments being made.

at the end of the day the cmca is a metropolitan cricket comp at the bottom of the food chain, if someone is really talented they will probably going and try somewhere else.

True, but if a club is well run then players have a knack of coming back. Many do after playing District cricket.
